BeoWulf_of_WA
currently have an 81 280ZX GL (turbo, t-tops, pwr windows/mirrors, etc) want to swap out the L28ET for a diesel, my questions are : between the LD28T or RD28Ti, which would get better performance/fuel economy/upgradability? will the RD28Ti fit directly (or does it require a bit of adaptation?) in an 81-83 280ZX? thanks in advance

randy 77zt
1st post-most first posters get ripped for not using search function.this has been discussed here lately.car will probably be a bit slower but get better fuel mileage.only nissan diesel i have seen that would be easy bolt-in would be old 810 motor and that wasnt turbo.you would need a 4 speed od auto trans or a 5 speed with a tall 5th-diesel motors like to turn slow. BeoWulf_of_WA
any input on what's required for the turbo version? or has no one tried it yet? likewise, has anyone tried to put a newer turbo diesel engine in a 81-83 zx? i see that the Patrol has the RD28Ti engine, i'm sure i can get one if i tried hard enough, just would like to know if it'd be difficult/nearly impossible to put in and get to fit. anyone happen to know ( or know where to find out) if the engine mount points in the Patrol 160 and Y61 are the same or damn close to it? Gollum
So.... why? With standalone EFI you can get much better MPG, and the engine has quite enough potential for most people. Certainly more than those diesel motors. Plan on towing something? I'm not trying to knock you at all, trust me. I'm just trying to figure out why those motors seems so interesting of a swap to you. BeoWulf_of_WA
why? cuz i've got an idea stuck in my head and i'd like to see how it would work out. of course it'd also be less expensive to go with the L28ET i have, and do all the upgrades to it. the largest problem for the project as i have it envisioned right now, is getting parts from across the various ponds in the way (from AUS and Europe) at a reasonable cost
OlderThanMe
Well you would have to convert it to rear sump oiling...That involves either drilling the rear oil pickup and blocking off the front one or making a long oil pickup tube and modify the oil pan. Gollum
cuz i've got an idea stuck in my head and i'd like to see how it would work out. Good enough for me. Just making sure you understand the L28et is a worthwhile engine.
