Toyota caliper swap clearence issues...

Well.. first thing.. what Toyota calipers? I am running the large 4 pistons from a 88+ 4Runner with 300zx rotors.

 

They have clearance issues.. they stick out just over a 1/4" more than stock calipers..

Depending on the style of your rim.. you may have problems..

The problem is at the centre of the rim.. if it has a bit of a "hat" mounting point like the 280zx 6 star rims.. then you may be ok.. I have the BBS styled mesh rims.. they are pretty flat accross the back.. I needed 1/4 inch spacers to clear my rims.. BTW they were 16x7's.

I just went through this conversion and it is far from a bolt-on!I ended up milling off the bottom fin on the face of each caliper for wheel clearance and this was after making spacers that set the calipers as far back as possible. The spacers for the 280Z rotors were time-consuming and need to be very accurate. I'm luckier than most guys as I have a mill and lathe in my garage and can cut and try on the fly. Good luck!

Ive got the slotted rotors and 4x4 brakes from msa, and now it feels like it takes more effort to brake the thing. Should i invest in a proportion valve, or go to a bigger master cylinder??

how does the pedal feel to you? i thought it was fine, but my buddy kept insisting my brakes engaged too low, so i went with the 79 280zx mc, which is a little bigger and stiffened the pedal right back up like stock, but before it was weird the pedal would have the slightest amound of freeplay before i could feel brakes, when i do the swap again im not going to swap mc's, didnt notice it really in braking power. make sure you bled the system really well and maybe the master too, and check brake lines.

I Put the 84 calipers on my 260, and I have some aftermaket slot mags on it, and they clear just fine. I had to trim about 1 inch of the dust shield on the top and bottom. The hardest part is bending the metal brake line without crimping it.

 

I am using the stock rotor, but had room to go with something thicker, although I have not mic'd my rotor to see the thickness.

 

My 260 has had sucky brakes since I got it, and I have replaced everything in the system, with the exceptions of the wheel cyliders, and I have kits for them, so that is next on the agenda. I put stainless lines, and a new MC, and it has a very firm pressure, but then it drops, and it is loosing fluid somewhere, but I don't see any puddles.

Have you replaced your power brake booster? Is there a mysterious smoke frome your exhaust on back down?

 

because if so, your booster may be bad in which case you are drawing brake fluid through the vacume line on your booster, and burning it up in your engine. Most likely it would be draining the rear brakes.
