anybody installed a s&w 8 point cage and got race seats..... i looked this link....http://12.224.138.56:8884/Files/Datsun/Rollbar/ and ther is only one pic with the door bars and race seats installed. the door bar contacts the seat frame of the stock seats in my '77, and it looks like most of the seats i look at are too wide in the shoulders to clear the bar....... any suggestions???

yours is the pic i mention above.... your door bar looks a little low, did it have to be that low to clear the seat or was there some other consideration? also how do you like the clubman seats? are they comfortable?

Dominic,

When I'm sitting in the seat, the door brace is above my elbow, so I think that it is high enough, but the main reason I didn't make it any higher was so that access in and out of the car was no worse than it had to be. As it is, it is quite a manuever to get in and out, luckily this won't be a daily driver (I think). The Clubman seats are very comfortable, even for my wife (for reasons I would never put into words malebitchslap.giftwak.gif ).

Terry,

Actually you would be amazed at how many sharpies I go through....I buy them by the box now!!

ill look more into going the clubman route. i really wanted to run a different seat, even though my stock seats are in perfect shape as they just dont have the support im used to.

well, after messin around with the car a bit this afterlunch, i think i may weld in an angled piece in between the door bar and the main hoop to push the upper part of the door bar down and out to gain some excra room. i gotta bolt the door, panel, and armrest back on to see if this will clear. after bolting the steering column/wheel and gas pedal to get some reference, my original location for the door bar seemed to high. i did get swing outs with my cage, but it felt like the door bar would get in the way of turning the wheel and operating the turn signal switch. i hope all that work will gain the extra room i need to clear a spearco torino or rev seat. but its hard to tell without ordering a seat. i just hate to waste $$$ on shipping both ways and restocking fees just to see....... anyone got one of these seats or something similar that could give me some more detailed measurements than are given on the spearco website????

tim..... do you think its possible (since your cage is in and you have similar seats) if i put my door bar in like yours, would there be enuf room to clear the shoulder wings on some of the other race seats? im looking at the sparco rev and torino, and they are about the same size as the clubman, but flair at the sholder. im not going to hold you to it, i just wanna know if even LOOKS possible before i actually order a seat. thanks nic

Depending on where the seats begin to flare, it could well be possible. I would suggest getting one seat first and mounting it, then weld in your roll cage around it...that's what I did. The clearances are very tight:less than a finger width between seat and tunnel and between seat and bar.

i dont know if its because i have a 280 and not a 240 but my door bars touch my seat at the main hoop. its REALLY close. that was the whole insperation to push the bar down and out with a short angled piece...... which made me think aftermarkets seats wouldnt work...... which made me think i didnt even want the door bars...... which....

i gotta figure something out, but i havent had time yet to reinstall the door/panel/armrest to see what kind of clearance i have......... then theres the whole thing of having to actually be able to reach the handle through the bar to open the door....... the list goes on and on.

I really wouldn't want diagonal door bars in my Z, as I'm 6'2" and 225 lbs. Getting over them would be a pain. I don't like swing outs, as I don't see that they do enough structurally to put up with having them there. To me, a street Z really needs a proper door bar and windshield hoop to stiffen and protect - one that comes down the A-pillar nicely and goes through the dash so as to not cut down on outward visibility. JHO.

Watch the Sparco seat's wings. The Corbeau wings are generally smaller and easier to fit in a Z.

i talked to the guy at S&W about custom bending me a windsheild hoop to behind the dash..... after i get the 8 point in and figure out the details i hafta send him info on the bend angles to go behind the dash. i dunno why im stuck on sparco seats, but i REALLY like the two seats i listed.... if the wings arent too big they should fit as they are the same size as the clubman. also if the door bars hafta go lower on the main tube to clear the shoulder wings on the new seats i probably wont use my swingout conv.s because i could get over the bar and under the wheel without too much trouble..... im only 6' 160lbs. so im small and flexible enuf to get in and out.
