Hartspank
Hey guys, if I remove the rear diff mount can I get the cover off to see what's goin' on. Just thought I'd ask before I tear apart more than I need to. Any helpful advice is greatly appreciated.
JMortensen
With a 280ZX being so easy, I'd just pull the whole diff. What kind of noise are you hearing? Does it match up with anything on these pages? http://www.ringpinion.com/ContentFrame.aspx?FilePath=Content%2fHowTo%2fGeneralInfo%2f%2fDiagnosing_Noise_(Part_1).inc http://www.ringpinion.com/ContentFrame.aspx?FilePath=Content%2fHowTo%2fGeneralInfo%2f%2fDiagnosing_Noise_(Part_2).inc
Hartspank
I'm not sure what's wrong, but it's an intermittent heavy clicking/banging that lasts for 2-3 seconds then all is fine. It usually does this when going straight at highway speeds. I'm guessing a bad spider?
JMortensen
Spiders aren't doing anything at all when you're driving straight, they're just along for the ride. It's just ring and pinion until you turn. From the sound of it you'll be needing to pull the diff anyway. I'd suggest you get another one and swap it in, as rebuilding these things is fairly expensive and a good used one is dirt cheap. You should have a 3.90 gear ratio if your ZX is non-turbo. This is all assuming that this is a diff noise and not something else, of course...
HICKL
Sounds like the spider gear pin has came loose. Has happened to me twice. It floats around and will float out far enough to hit the pinion gear every now and then and make the noise.
Hartspank
Thanks for the help Jon. Definately bad noises from the diff. Looks like a wrench festival in my future. Now I've got to sit on the couch and shop for Datsun parts all night:cry2:

HICKL
Both of mine have been "not worth it". The pin get's chewed up, the spider gear housing get's wallered out and the pinion gear get's dinged up.
Hartspank
You had me all excited for a second.
JMortensen
Yeah, that pin backing out is a pretty common problem. Especially for drag racers and guys doing lots of burnouts. If that sounds like you my suggestion is to try welding the pin in on your new diff. Fixing that one is not worth it if that is indeed the problem.
