dapiper
Anyone have a source for the TO4 repair manual? I am rebuilding a 10 year old Turbonetics H3. I have progressed to the bearing housing internals. It was doing fine, but a little sloppy on radial end play. I have the rebuild kit. OBTW, can you rebuild with out separating bearing housing from turbine housing, since they are corroded together?
letitsnow
I found this link helpful. I believe that the T3 and the T04 CHRA's are near identical so everything should apply. I don't think you can rebuild without removing the turbine housing. I used a torch and a big hammer to get mine off.
Clifton
Turbine housing has to come off to get the turbine wheel out. Have to change the rear bearing and piston ring. When you put the new piston ring back on, keep the gap pointing up. T3 and T4 chra's are exactly the same. T4's just use a larger heat shield. dapiper
Thanks guys. Hate to spend $400 for rebuild, but cannot separate turbine housing. Thats 1/3 cost of GT35R. Never used to bother with balance on old Rajay rebuilds. Will a propane torch get hot enough?
Clifton
I would soak it good with WD40 or similar and get it hot and tap it with a heavy hammer. Be careful not to damage the wheel though. If you do bend a blade a little you can bend them back. As far as balancing. The compressor wheel and turbine wheel are balanced individually. I know Turbonetics balances them as an assembly when they assemble them. I have mixed there assembly balanced parts on one turbo and didn't have a problem. I have done it alot on individually balanced turbos too. I know of two local turbo rebuild shops that don't even have a balancer.
letitsnow
Thanks guys. Hate to spend $400 for rebuild, but cannot separate turbine housing. Thats 1/3 cost of GT35R. Never used to bother with balance on old Rajay rebuilds. Will a propane torch get hot enough? It's better than nothing, I used acetylene and had to beat the piss out of it with a 3lb hammer. Just make sure it doesn't come off crooked and damage the wheel. My personal favorite penetrating oils are PB Blaster and Kroil.
dapiper
Took to Midas and took just a little heat to free up. Piston ring seal on turbo end would not seat and bent; reused old one since had no wear, but less tension
Clifton
You have to wiggle the shaft with the ring on it as far down as you can into chamfer in the housing before giving it a tap. I have bent one too thinking it was centered in there. I keep an extra now.
