Ok more info from the old emails as I put this thing together. I tried emailing the Prez of the Z club there: http://www.emeraldcityzclub.com/

Look at who is the VP -----> Roger Williams, Vice-President & Historian

Now look at who JHD was talking about in his email who he bought the "NOS" hubcaps from and then sold them to me:

Clive,

I noticed the grease and wondered myself what that meant. I also noticed the paint was spotty but did not realize that it was just two. Let me call Roger Williams (the guy I bought them from in 1999). Roger's father was a mechanic at the Datsun dealership in Greenville and then Roger started working in the parts department in 1985 (of course it was Nissan by then). Roger has always been crazy about 240Zs and has had quite a number of them.

Roger was never interested in the stock classic look of the 240Z (ie the hubcaps) so I would be surprised if he put them on one of his cars to try them out. But it is possible.

What I am wondering is if the paint came off, rather spotty, at the same time that the surface rust developed (did you notice the surface rust on the back of the hubcaps?). I didn't see any sign of dirt, etc. that you would expect of the hubcaps that had been on a car or any sign that they had been cleaned in an effort to cover up the fact that they had been used. Regarding the grease I wondered if that was to help them go on the car more easily. I have never known hubcaps to come with grease but it makes sense that they would come with grease to go on the wheel with more ease.

Roger is a member of our Z club. He should be able to tell me more of the history of the hubcaps and whether he had put them on a Z to see what they looked like, etc. I bet anything that he didn't. He is so meticulous about all things Z and takes such excellent care of them. The dealership changed hands many times and I think when that happened he was able to acquire Z parts as I also bought two early 280ZX wheels for myself. I doubt I will ever use them. Let me find out more from Roger and I will get back to you. Take care, John Hunter D.

Guys, this email is the one he sent me right after I got the parts and I told him I was not happy with them. You can see where he tells on himself by saying he saw all the flaws in the parts before he sent them.

Of course I am trying to reach out to the Z world for help and the person I am reaching out to may be someone helping JHD rip me off. I really hope that club isn't full of people like that! If you are a member there...you need to take a good look at this story!

Funny thing is no one is trying to clear their name.....

Clive

What a idiot, like he needs to do some research to verify if they were NOS or not. Maybe he blows through thousands of Nissan parts a week, he can't keep up. Pre lubed hubcaps, I have heard it all! (please don't tell me they actually do that.)

According to Wikipedia...

New old stock (abbreviated NOS) refers to merchandise being offered for sale which was manufactured long ago but that has never been used. Such merchandise may not be produced anymore, and the new old stock may represent the only market source of a particular item at the present time. Although not an officially recognized accounting term, it is in common use in the auction and retail industries. eBay uses the term on their auction website.

One web site catering to vacuum tube enthusiasts [1] defines it as, any stocked item which is either A: out of production; B: discontinued from the current line of product; C: has been sitting on a stockroom or warehouse shelf for some time; or D: any combination of the above.

While damage to the original packaging is common, damage to its contents is generally not acceptable in determining if an item is NOS, as it should be presentable in the same form as when new.

Some people also refer to such merchandise as New Obsolete Stock to further indicate that the parts have not been manufactured for several years.

That JHD guy is an idiot,

I am never impressed with the shine and show types. They all claim to have ancient/lost knowledge about classic cars and ties to ancient dealerships. Most of them don't have a 4ucking clue. I love to wear them out at car shows. I see the old guys talking about their Z-cars and then I drop bombs on their "ancient knowledge". Knowledge is not gained through osmosis and exposure to Z-cars over decades of ignorant hacking.

NOS... It is not that hard to look at a part and determine if it is NEW, OLD, STOCK, and it's condition... after lying on a shelf for 30+years.

I am willing to accept that some NOS parts may have deteriorated after years of storage.

This is DIFFERENT!!!!, They are 4ucking HUBCAPS!!!! The only NOS wear and tear I would expect to see is a possible scratch from rubbing on the packaging.

If they are covered with dust, rust, dings, dents, grease, and the paint is comming off then they are 4UCKING USED!!!!!

If JHD is reading this then I have a message... Suck it up and return the money or you will hear about it at the next show.

Thanks BJ, I have them still boxed in the boxes he sent them to me in. I will take pics for everyone. I have him 2 weeks to think about it and do the right thing. Now he has left me no choice to put his name on blast on the internet.

JHD, I no longer respect you as a person and you have made a huge deal out of a lie you got caught in. This is a small Z world and I am sure one day we will be at the same show, I will have some words for you.
