Mikelly
OK, OK guys I know we all have been told that you shouldn't or "Can't" use the Viscous style LSD units that came in some of the late 80s and throughout the 90s nissan product line. However, I'm now getting mixed reports of people using them with great success and zero failures... I am asking those that have actually used them to give us their experiences and dispell this myth... Thanks! Guest Anonymous
I have the stock visous LSD in my 88 turbo - the rarest Z ever made 110k miles and no problems. They don't wear out because the viscous assembly has no contact parts, unlike clutch LSDs. The S/S r200 viscous lsd has the z31 style case, which bolts right in, but they are rare. Someone needs to figure out some OE parts you can use to make a z32 style case fit! They're all over the place and in 2 choice ratios! A friend of mine puts almost 500hp through his viscous LSD in his Z31(3k pounds) and not a single problem. ------------------ Morgan http://z31.com/~morgan/s30 http://carfiche.com
Guest scca
i think he was referring to early Z's? no? check out James website in this.... http://www.eng.fsu.edu/~jthagard/ theres a link on this exact thing. i was talking to him 2x in the last week about brakes and this and it may be a easy way to use the VSLD diff. thats next for my car along with the SDS -- at least i think it is. ------------------ Mike mike@fonebooth.com http://www.fonebooth.com/brakes.html raceparts and brake upgrades. Drax240z
Speaking of the SDS Mike, are you still trying to organize the group purchase? Guest Anonymous
Morgan, You may be just the one to answer this question... Is there any difference between the VLSD R200s found in the Limited Edition 88 300ZXs and the VLSD R200s found in the n/a Z32s? The reason I ask this question is because I went back and read some of my communications with James Thagard and I get the impression he is using a VLSD from the Limited Edition 88 300ZX. As you say, Morgan, quite rare!! The VLSDs from the Z32s are falling out of trees...they are all over the place!! Thanks, Chris
Guest Anonymous
No, as I wrote in 10 other messages elsewhere people were discussing LSDs, the s30/s130/z31 r200 case is vastly different from the r200 case found in Z32s and 240SXs. A diff is a diff is a diff, the case just looks different. A viscous diff is no different than a clutch diff or an open diff. They all take basically anything you can throw at them unless you abuse them or they are improperly assembled. ------------------ Morgan http://z31.com/~morgan/s30 http://carfiche.com
Guest Anonymous
I have the R230 viscous LSD in my Z with a conservitive 425 hp. I don't baby it at all. I have had it in the car for about a year and a half with no durability problems from the diff. Still looking for production parts to make the half shafts cheaper. The search continues. Installing the diff was not that bad, redrill an R200 mustache bar and make a front mount that bolts to where the safty strap brackets bolted to. I hope to get my hands on some newer maxima drive axels soon and play with these. Guest Speaker
not to be picky... but the 88 turbo wasn't the rarest Z ever made... i'm assuming you're referring to an 88SE? well the 90-something model SR-71 300zxTT was the rarest ever made... sorta like a saleen deal; but still available off the nissan showroom floor... made by texas motorsports... basically a stage VII TT w/ NOS and 3pc BBS rims and kaminari bodykit but I am very interested it getting a Z32 differential to work with the 240Z i want to build... is that kind of swap possible? or will i need to do something to the frame? Guest Anonymous
Speaker, Yes, the swap is certaily possible. I plan on using a R200 VLSD from a n/a Z32. I am far from that stage of the project at this time. There is no comparison of the availability of the R200 VLSD v. the R200 clutch pack LSD. The first day I started looking around for the R200 VLSD I found four of them, at one yard!! I have found them as high as $500 and as low as $180. Mark has adapted the 1/2 shafts for his R230 VLSD so I don't think it would be too difficult to adapt the half shafts for the R200 VLSD.
