Guest ProjectZxT Posted April 12, 2008 Share Posted April 12, 2008 Hi Everyone, I have been in the process of installing a 280zxt engine and auto tranny both from an '83, into my '81 280ZxT Since I didnt pull the tranny I don't know what belongs in this hole, my best guess would be a plug or a sensor. The next thing is this engine has a p90a head so from what I've read it should have hydraulic lifters, which seems to be a negative if I want to build a powerful engine. To me these look like solid lifters but then again I don't know everything. At least not yet. Any idea about the red paint at the base of each spring? On a side note it seems pretty clean in there for 162,000 miles. Another thing I have been curious of... From what I have read the Turbo 280zx was initially produced starting in 3/81 with a starting serial of 600,001. The curious thing is my car has a manufacture date of 12/80 and a serial in the 270,103 but it was definatly a turbo from the factory. Is there anything special about this or is it just that all the history is screwed up? Just in case it needs to be said I have used the search button and google and my head is about to explode, So please if you can help that would be great if not then I probably dont need your feed back. Kevin.pk Posted April 12, 2008 Share Posted April 12, 2008 The p90a head came in both hydraulic and solid lifter form. There is no real difference between a p90 solid lifter and p90a solid lifter. I do think the p90a solid lifter is less common but has no extra benefit. As for the manufacture date and such, I am not completely sure. But i know 1981 was the first year for the 280zx turbo, and it would not be extraordinary if a car had a build date in 1980 and the car titled as a 1981. btw... this is probably posted in the wrong section since it is somewhat technical you might have better luck in the l6 turbo section or s130 specific section. Good luck on your quest to know everything. Here's some help, On average, 350 squirts are needed from milking a cow to make a gallon of milk. I thought that the red paint came on new parts, or from the factory, and then just got worn off over time. Apologies if that's completely wrong/stupid. woldson Posted June 8, 2008 Share Posted June 8, 2008 From what I've read so far, you don't want the lifters especially if you want a longer rpm range. It seems that they can not keep up and can cause a possible floating situation. You are lucky that you have that head. It is a soild lifter. Now I will throw a little some thing out there for you, I've never heard of the orginial auto being worth a poop. So why not keep a manuel for just the fun factor?? I've got hydraulic ones, and they just have the hex bit at the base to tighten them down, and no springs on the rocker arms either. Not sure what that hole is in the trans, but I've got one in a freind's garage bolted up to my motor (out of an 83 turbo as well), I'll try and remember to check it out next time I'm there.
