Zyler
I have a 1972 datsun 240z and ran into a problem. this is what happened. my battery was dead so i put in a battery from a different car into my z. but i didn't pay attention to the polarity of the other battery. the polarity on the other battery was opposite of the datsun's battery. i drove the car around for a while and it worked fine. i went to drive it the next day and i didn't start. so i jumped it and it ran for a little bit after i pulled the jumper cables off then it died. so then i finally looked at the polarity on the battery and then switched it. the car runs as long as it is being jumped but as soon as you take the cables off it runs for a little bit then dies. does anyone have any suggestions. i need some help thanks. i think i fried the alternator or some kind of fuse or something. help
MatMan
Not supposed to post without KNOWING the answer, but since no one else has tried to point you in the right direction: If I were you, I would test the voltage regulator AFTER I pulled the alternator and had it tested at the local Kragan/Schucks/NAPA. You may want to have the battery tested, while you are at it, and since you will be down for a bit, put an ohm meter to the fusable links to make sure you didn't fry them. Zyler
I have not found a solution yet i bought a new battery. Now when the battery is hooked up the lights on the dash work, but when i try to start the car, the starter makes a click but does not engage, then nothing, no lights no nothing. then i will disconnect the battery for 10 seconds or so then i hook it back together then the dash lights work then it happens all over again. I have taken the stater into a checker and they said it worked just fine. I did search the forums about a month ago for an answer and I found thread with a link to a site that specilized in Datsun wiring, but i have been looking for the last 2 hours and can't find that thread the link was on. Please help
woldson
Clean connections at battery. Don't say they look fine. Once cleaned fasten tightly. This is a classic systom, might be something else, but I dought it.
tech9
Also check the fusable link area. Its a pretty simple system, so i'm sure its either a bad wire (fried from the wrong polarity) or bad connection as stated ^^.... I had problems starting with a bad fusable link. Zyler
I finally got the thing started, all it needed was a new alternator and new battery cables then it worked just fine. Thanks for the help.
