dschock
Hey, I need to change the fluid in my '71 240z transmission. Does anyone know the right type of oil that I should use and have any tips or a tutorial for doing it? Thanks
gwnwar
If it's a manual 90 weight Redline is a good brand but it does cost more. Loosen the fill plug before you drain it..
dschock
And is this all done under the car on the transmission itself? Or is there a place to fill it under the hood that I'm unaware of?
TrumpetRhapsody
All on the trans itself. There are posts about it around here, or you could d/l a service manual. It's pretty easy though, drain plug on the bottom, fill plug on the side, fill till level with the fill plug. Done.
blue72
Search is your friend. http://forums.hybridz.org/showthread.php?t=138722 Also, you might google fluid temperature ratings and choose a gear oil viscosity appropriate to your environment. Zmanco
I've found it easiest to refill from above via the engine compartment. Get 2 feet of ~ 1/2" clear tubing at Lowes/HD. From under the car insert one end of the hose into the fill hole on the tranny and route the other up towards the battery. Then just put the nipple of oil container (I'm assuming you're using a 1 quart bottle) into the hose and squeeze. If it's cold you may want to soak the bottle in warm water beforehand to make it flow better. It's easier and neater than doing it from under the car. Heh, I did it this morning that same way before even reading your post. Except I didn't warm the oil first, I poked a hole in the back of the bottle and used the air compressor to give it some pressure. Thanks! dschock
Also, do I use the same oil/method to fill the differential?
Zmanco
Yes, but make sure you can remove the fill plug before you drain the oil. Often those plugs are over-tightened and it's a bear to get them out. Unlike the tranny which can be filled via the shifter if necessary, there's no other practical way to fill the diff while it's in the car.
