Coolant..in the bellhousing!

Hey There,

Had a wee starting issue with my Z31 so I thought to clean the connections on the starter motor. When I undid the bolts that go through the bellhousing some coolant leaked out!

Bright Green and very clean.

Regular problem or am I in for a bit of challenge? I have no overheating issues or anything.

Cheers

Kelsey

:eek2::confused2:hs::willy_nil...............wait, isn't everything a challenge on a Z31? not familiar with them, but do the bolts go into the through the bellhousing and into the block? if so, one of the bolts might have broken through the water jacket....not good. I would drain the coolant, put JB Weld on the tip of that bolt, and tighten it back in if that's the case. that's the only way i can think to plug it without disassembling and taking block to machine shop......

did it keep on leaking or just a spurt then stop? Just having changed starter on z31 see no way you would get coolant from those bolts. bolts thread into starter. If you had coolant in the bell housing then you got a leak somewhere. Head gasket??? Freeze plug like suggested above. If the bell housing were full of coolant don't think your clutch would work well. I'd probably Pull the tranny (might want to know if your clutch has coolant on it anyway) start the engine let it get hot see if you spot any leakage. Could put some ultraviolent dye in the coolant and black light it for a leak spot. Just remember coriolus effect is backwards south of the equator

Saw this same thing on another Z31, and it turned out to be the coolant pipe to the heater underneath the intake manifold and plenum. Get a paper towel under the joint at the back (the joint is right above where the transmission and the block mate), and let it sit for a day or so. If your leak is from there, it will get the towel.

Wow

Just so you guys know, coolant did not come from the bolts in the bell housing. I don't care how long they are.
