ZXT_bean
rod knock or possible piston slap?
ozconnection
I just saw your vid on youtube. When did the noise start? Was the engine cold when you took that video? Do you punish your engine or do you drive it with some respect? Is power down? When was it last serviced? Have you done a compression/leakdown test? And this is like a crime scene. Gather as much information about your engine as you can and then tell us what you have found. Then we have a greater chance of figuring out your problem. Good luck mate. srbigbutt
Read this thread on classiczcars.com. I had that same sound and it turned out to be a lash pad had fallen off and the rocker arm was flapping around. http://www.classiczcars.com/forums/showthread.php?t=30832 I reinstalled the lash pad and did a valve adjustment and haven't had a problem since. Oooo... nice one. I think that's my vote, too. Get out a good sized screwdriver and use it as a stethoscope by sticking the pointed end against the valve cover and put your ear against the handle part and move the screwdriver to various points along the valve cover to find the loudest part. If it's really a dull sound no matter where you put it, try to get the screwdriver down to the block and do the same. NOTE: It is very important you don't stick the pointed end in your ear. If you can't figure out why, then do it and rid the world of you.

ShaggyZ
bump What the heck are you bumping this for?
HowlerMonkey
Sound should tell you if it is top end or bottom end. I'm on a blackberry so no youtube.......at least not easily. I use a timing light to determine which cylinder and knowing the top end spins half speed of the bottom end, you can usually divine what you know. 2eighTZ4me
I'm with yogaZ - nothing visibly wrong there. Lash pads are all in their proper locations. Ewww...perhaps time to start looking at the bottom end of that motor......
srbigbutt
Same here. Pics look ok. How do they feel? Any of valve springs stuck down? Or are any rockers really loose? Could be a bent valve.
akangler
Any oil in the engine? Oil pump?
big-phil
did you start the motor with the valve cover off? That would tell you if its there or at the bottom.
ozconnection
did you start the motor with the valve cover off? That would tell you if its there or at the bottom. You could start it, like Big Phil suggests, but try just cranking the engine. Start with the plugs in, then remove them and see if that changes the cranking sound/ valvetrain sound and you can watch the whole lot if someone turns the motor over for you. You will see if the oil pump is working too without spashing oil everywhere. Good luck.
shift00
Do a compression test man...then you'll narrow it down into a couple options. joe
