l28ET TRANNY Q.

ok i am having a blond momet tonight..

i need a 5 speed tranny for my l28et

and from what i understand

i can use a FS5W71B from a 280z it is just weaker then the T-5 from the turbo 280zx right ? or no ?

also if i can does this mean i could also bolt up a 5 speed tranny from

a 84-86 nissan 200sx as they have the FS5W71B as well?

and if that would work could i also bolt up a FS5W71C from the 86-88 nissan 200sx?

the reason i ask is there are a lot of tranny's from the listed 84-88 nissan 200sx in my locale junk yard

and also they are both shorter then a 240sx "C" tranny ( is that right?)

so if/when i pick up a s30 z to put this motor in i do not what to make the changes to the car that i would have to useing a s13 or s14 tranny.

if it would not be a bolt up deal what would i need to do to use a 84-88 nissan 200sx 5 speed "B" or "c" tranny on my L28ET?

Thank you for your help i really dont understand trannies and any advice is helpfull to my learning..

Thank you

Kyo

the 84-88 nissan 200sx is a CA sohc 4cyl.

that is why i did not know,

you can put a s13 or s14 tranny on both the

L-series Zcars as well as the CA 200sx from my understanding with a bell housing swap..

so that lead me to blieve i might be able to put the (easy for me to find)

tranny from a 84-88 200sx on to my L28et.

I searched but could not find any info about using a 84-88 200sx tranny on a L-series

only using a 89-98 240sx tranny on a L-series

I also know that the short case "C" tranny from the later year's 200sx (87-88)

will bolt up to a KA so from just learning that

I should be able to use a short case "C" tranny from a 87-88 Nissan 200sx with the same

Prosess as if i was doing a S13 tranny on a L-series

please correct me if i am wrong in this thought I strugle with Tranny info.

Thanks

Kyo

sweet that is good to know, i was hoping so

as there are tons of those around in the junk yards

but yeah I am going to keep looking for a L-series trans

only if i can not find one locale will i consider the bellhousing swap idea.

Thanks

Ok, as far as the CA transmissions, get one from an '87 or newer 200SX or 240SX. These have all the goodies, and the most compatable gearing.

Timeline for the FS5W71C is as follows:

F4W71B four speed, -> 240Z-260Z-280Z 71.5-?

F5W71B five speed, -> 280Z to 79 (possibly, not certain.)

FS5W71B, five speed, -> 280ZX 79-83 non-turbo

FS5W71C, five speed, redesigned tailhousing, shifter, 62mm countershaft bearing upgrade, -> 84-86.5 Z31 non-turbo, S13 84-86.5 with five speed.

FS5W71C, five speed, double cone steel syncros on second gear, 1mm wider gear teeth, all previous upgrades carried through, -> '87 and newer S13, S14, Xterra, maybe others.

I have not included information on the trucks because i don't have concrete info on those. Also, I don't know the Z31-Z32 crossover change.

Prfect that is what i needed to know

the only thing i am still confused about is

i was told that a FS5W71C from 86-88 200sx is identical

to a FS5W71C from a S13

but that the one from a 86-88 200sx is about 2in shorter

and has a difrent bellhousing for the CA.

is it true that 200sx FS5W71C is shorter but otherwise the same as the one from a S13?
