wizern23
I was planning on doing a V8 swap after i buy a z and has it as a project stretched across a few years for money issues and was wondering whats the biggest v8 engine that has been put in 1970-1976 z. I don't care about the hood clearance because I'm not going to stay with the stock hood. I was also hoping to buy custom engine mounts so that it will sit lower when i start on the swap when i go to college. I want it to be a drag/street car so high hp and torque is a must. I was hoping along the lines of truck engines to set it apart from the LS engines.
kiwi303
I think I recall reading about someone talking about a caddy 500 motor that got attacked by the stroker fairy.
Scarab 155
A big block Chevy will fit .. you can get way more than 500 cubes with a new crate motor.. Try the ZZ502 or ZZ572... Summitt has them -- Go for it !!
dustin280zx
There is a 500 CI LS1 that makes 717 hp and 630 tq on pump gas with stock ls7 heads and 923 hp on a little shot of the bottle. Price is 14,900. Its in the April issue of CHP. I know that no one has put that in a z yet and you can buy mounts for it too.
hoov100
I'm sure dart makes a 6-700 cubic inch BBC.

Crash
I was thinking 572 also. There's an HO version that is 750+HP. Nelson Racing uses it in a few of there N/A cars. But you can definitely do a 600+ci too.
HowlerMonkey
I test fitted a merlin 9.4 liter (572) and it went right in. It seems the ford modular engine is damn wide and you might have trouble fitting it. I've seen the caddy 500/501 in a 910 maxima and I really love that pic of the 472 but your choice may depend on availability of parts since that pic above probably has most every performance part made for the caddy engine in one place. wizern23
From your suggestions im leaning to the Chevy 572 engine but would like to know more about the merlin 9.4 liter. since you that its very wide what would actually have to be done to put it in, do you have any pics of one, and where could i get one if i do choose to go with it? HowlerMonkey
The merlin 9.4 is a chevy 572.........same size as a 396 except for the taller deck which widens it only a little. It's what mercruiser used/uses on the 1000sc engines back in the 1990s. Not sure if they still use it as I usually see 540 as of recently. Goober
well i know you can get an lsx motor that is a sb 454. I dont think you will have a problem with motor size, it will be if the car can handle the motor.
HowlerMonkey
Mercruiser is a inboard/outboard maker. Mercury is the outboard division. There have been some good innovations in 4 stroke outboards lately. Supercharged inline six of 275hp.
navyz
Has anyone put anything bigger then a 350 in a z31? I was planning ..well dreaming of putting a 454 in my 89 Z31 after bootcamp and school. I know its gonna take alot of work but it would be worth it. If the motor some how sqeezed its way in the car what kind of rear end should i go with?
