zmainiac
i am looking to cage my z31 and i was wondering where to order a premade weld in kit or if i should just have one made. My car should be in the 9 sec 1/4 mile range within a year so i want to get a cage to meet those requirements. i also am going to track the car at the glen and i might even go to the standing mile and or bonnaville. What point cage do i get and are the premade ones any good?
dustin280zx
I believe it's a 10 point for the 9's or 135+ in NHRA rules.
johnc
Since you car is going to compete with many different sanctioning bodies (NHRA, SCTA, SCCA, NASA, etc.) your only option is a custom cage. The builder will need the rules from each of these groups and will have to really study things to make sure the cage passes at least three full tech inspections. At a minimum you're looking at: 1. 1.75" x .120" wall tubing. 2. At least 8 mounting points. 3. Double door bars on both sides. 4. .125" chassis plating. 5. Gussets or corner diagonals. There is no off the shelf solution that I'm aware of. Edited March 17, 2009 by johnc
zmainiac
That is what i figured. i will probably just be doing driving events at the glen for a while as i haven't done any yet but i will definately be running 10 second passes this year and i am probably running at the 1 mile track in the carolinas with some of my z guys. JMortensen
Get all the rulebooks before you do anything and always double check specs. I think John, who builds a lot of cages and would be a good person to consult on the design of the cage, is wrong on the mounting plate thickness requirement. I believe it is .125" for NHRA. I could be wrong too, as I'm going from memory, but I thought it was thicker than .100" which is the standard for SCCA as I recall.
johnc
Yup, just looked in my NHRA rule book and mounting plates are .125". SCCA is .083". See how important the rule books are...
