cygnusx1 Posted June 26, 2009 Share Posted June 26, 2009 First off...do a compression test to rule out a head gasket leak which is quite possible on a non-wastegate turbo setup over an N/A motor with little to no fuel enrichment. DETONATION PRONE! Ruling out a head gasket leak...it's an exhaust manifold gasket leak. Usually the first and last exhaust manifold bolts are loose. Now, to modernize, add a rising rate fuel pressure regulator, to add fuel under boost, and and a modest intercooler to curb pre-ignition. Run premium fuel. Other than that, NICE CAR! rossman Posted June 26, 2009 Share Posted June 26, 2009 A rising rate fuel pressure regulator is installed in-line with your fuel return line. You attach a hose from your intake to give it a boost/vacuum signal. Based on the boost signal, it blocks off the fuel return so that there is more pressure at the fuel injectors. The limitation to this is that the stock injectors are pretty low flowing. You might also consider going with turbo injectors. If you do this you have to modify (tighten) the air flow meter spring. turbojohnny Posted June 26, 2009 Author Share Posted June 26, 2009 ok, so it's the same thing as an fmu. if i'm keeping the boost low do i need to worry about the injectors at all? you may ask how low of boost, i can't answer that, i don't exactly know how to adjust boost on this car because there is no wastegate on the setup. and i don't want to install a boost gauge in the car because i like everything looking the way it is, maybe a temporary gauge would be fine just to test. i do have an intercooler that i had installed on my saab for a while that i could use on this car, my only question is i was told that the pop-off valve on the j-pipe controls the boost, or at least is an emergency relief valve for the pressure. so, if i replace the j-pipe with other tubing and just install a bov is that going to mess up anything? turbojohnny Posted July 1, 2009 Author Share Posted July 1, 2009 all set to take care of things started to pull things apart to take care of the head gasket a little earlier. before i pull the cam gear i think i have it set to 0*btdc, but looking at the sprocket i don't see anything lined up between any lighter colored links in the chain, is this right?
