travlnman
'78 280Z , all stock except for a CAI installed by previous owner. Usually when cold, tach is fine. After some seat time, even in normal driving, tach seems to have a mind of it's own. It will read a higher rpm than I am driving at, and sometimes after engine is cut off, it will hang at about 1000 rpm. If it's showing high while running, a quick bump on the dash above it will drop it down some. Same for when it's off, if it's stuck at 1k just bump it, and it will come down some, but usually not completely. Next morning, good as new until hot. Sound like I'm gonna be buying a tach soon doesn't it ? Looking for input, thanks.
m4xwellmurd3r
sounds like mine. when it's hot, it sticks like crazy, but if it cools down it reads decently (i installed a small tach and at idle and up to around 3000rpm, they both read the same, after that, the stock tach reads lower by up to 400rpm)
travlnman
I found a place online that has autometer tachs that fit the factory spot in the dash. It's a white faced tach, but looks okay. May go with that. Plenty of factory used ones for okay $ but the refurbished ones are big $$$.
MoNkEyT88
check the connection for the signal wire on the coil in the engine compartment.
PanzerAce
check the connection for the signal wire on the coil in the engine compartment. This. The problem isn't the tach, it's the connection with the coil. I get similar problems if my car sits in 110+ heat int he sun for a few hours. travlnman
Panzer, if so , what's the solution, if any ? The main thing that made me think it was the gauge itself was the fact that it would hang at 1k even with the engine off. I'll try to check those again today. They seemed clean and tight when I last looked.
PanzerAce
Mine does it no matter what so long as the key is in any position other than off. As for solutions, I honestly have no idea :/
travlnman
May just ignore it, until I can replace it , that will fix it for sure....I hope.
stravi757
mine does the same thing, it used to never work until i took it out of the car and i hit it a few times. but now mine works great...until it gets hot of course, other wise when it cold outside i was talking to someone and they said you either have to clean the connection or make it so it doesn't get as hot, i haven't figured out a way of accomplishing that yet tho
