NCZZZ
I have installed 4 piston calipers with drilled/slotted rotors on front of my 240Z. Is the back plate (dust shield) really necessary? I did a disc brake conversion on the rear and there is no back plate (after removing the old drum brake back plate). Is there some other purpose than a dust shield? If not, I would just as soon leave it off. Opinions...
2126
IMO, you will be fine without them. Discs my get wetter in the rain however! I've removed mine without issues.......but, I only drive my 240 in good weather! Tom
JMortensen
Most racing organizations demand that you remove the backing plates and I ran my Z on the street for years in all kinds of weather without issue.
johnc
The inner part of the backing plate is a good base to build on for brake ducting.
NCZZZ
Thanks for the input. I really could not see the need for the back plate when using higher performance braking components other than possibly water. The car will probably not see too many adverse weather conditions--although it will be driven! Noted on the possible use of plates for brake ducting. Thanks.
