takebackthepower
I am new to the forum and am working on my first Z car. first thing i wanted to do was rip the bumpers off. Everything went smooth until i came to the rear right piston mount. The gas tank is blocking it, is there any way of removing it without messing with the gas tank? jhm
Like BRAAP said...."drop the tank!". There's really no way around it. FORTUNATELY....it really isn't that big a deal and you only need to drop the tank a few inches -- no need to completely remove the tank. First, MAKE SURE YOUR TANK IS ESSENTIALLY EMPTY. You will see the wisdom in this once you start getting into it. There's a drain plug at the bottom of your tank. You can usually drop the tank enough by simply removing the two lines in the front of the tank and the big fat filler inlet hose. Remove the two small lines first, lower the tank a couple inches to give you enough room to reach up between the tank and the fender, then remove the filler inlet hose. Lower the tank a couple more inches and you should have sufficient clearance to remove the bumper mount. While you're at it, this is a good time to replace your rubber fuel lines and fuel filter. Good luck and enjoy your new shaved-look rear valence!
srbigbutt
Drop the tank!!! I'm with JHM on the fuel lines. I made the mistake of not having any on hand when I decided to take it off and of course the fuel line just disintegrated when I took it off the fuel tank. So I had to go take a shower before my wife would let me in her car to go buy some fuel line!! I smelled like gasoline for a week. I had a very hard time getting the shock mount out the hole on the passanger side. The mounting bracket just wouldn't fit and I couldn't move the shock enough because it was pushed in and welded. After scratching the ♥♥♥♥ out of my paint I decided to just cut the bracket off and pull it out.
deja
LOl, I had that problem too. But if I remember correctly it will come out if you turn it the right way push in some and turn it will eventually come out. Kind of like getting a couch through a doorway!! I think I lucked out and stumbeled on the right angle, soory I don't remember what that angle id. I had a very hard time getting the shock mount out the hole on the passanger side. srbigbutt
I probably could have gotten it out without cutting, but if I had to do it again I would cut the brackets off first before even trying. It made it so much easier. I felt like an idiot spending so much time trying to find the magical angle!! After I cut the bracket off it came right out. Not like I was going to reuse those damn things anyway.
