Guest Anonymous
I was wondering who on this forum uses a gear reduction starter on Z's that dont use them stock. I replaced mine with a gear reduction starter from my friends 280zxt and it worked ok untill just the other day. I turned the key and the engine turned over for less than 1 second and the starter just spooled up. I then switched back to my stock 260 starter and it only grinds. Are both starters bad or is my car unable to use a gear reduction starter. Ps: Both starters worked fine until I switched them. Thankz James
Tim240z
Sounds like an electrical problem......check battery charge and voltage to the solenoid. Can you turn the motor by hand? Tim
Guest Anonymous
The stock starter will start the engine sometimes and run fine. It just seems like it is not gripping the flywheel.
Tim240z
Take the starter off and feel the flywheel teeth to see if maybe they're not stripped. Tim
denny411
if the flywheel teeth have been burred from the bendix spinning against it, you may have to dress the teeth with a file to clean them up.
Mike C
Also, I answered this same post in the Datsun L6 section. Please don't post same question in multiple boards.
