datsun79z
Question: What attributes combine to make a quality oil filter for an engine, and based on your personal feelings how do some of the "name brand" filters rate? Mike
jasper
Wix, Mann, Hengst, Napa gold, are some of the quality brands that come to mind.

Mike K & N probably has technically the finest Oil Filter produced for mass use. Royal Purple just came out with their performance Oil Filter. Also Amsoil has good oil filters. zman1988
I've found that if you remove the filter housing, the better quality filters will have the media ends glued together (the red areas in the picture). the cheaper filters will just have a string around the media to keep it together. jhm
If you do a Google search, you'll be amazed at the number of tests and studies that have been performed on engine oils and filters...here's just a couple: http://people.msoe.edu/~yoderw/oilfilterstudy/oilfilterstudy.html http://minimopar.knizefamily.net/oilfilters/index.html I've been using Purolator PureOne filters on all my vehicles for several years with good results. dhp123166
This is purely opinion and what the OP asked for (I wouldn't want to be accused of not knowing anything), but I find that as long as I religiously change my oil and filter every 3000 miles FRAM and BOSCH filters work fine with organic oil. I just started using synthetic oil and have been told that I can up that time between oil changes 5000 miles.
hoov100
Personally, I wouldnt use a filter with a bypass rating, I would use one with a burst rating, just something about the oil actually being filtered, when not at idle.
