Fender Flares

I have seen several members' cars with fender flares and think this might be necessary with my car to keep the look I want with wider tires. I am curious as to what source of flares people prefer or warn to stay away from. Do you have the best luck with fiberglass or metal? Also, when the flare is attached to the body panel at a higher point (arch) than the stock wheel well, what have you done with the stock wheel well fender lip? Leave it alone, cut it higher? I hate the thought of totally destroying the original fenders to the point of no return, but am thinking this might be the only way to keep tire clearance with bigger tires. Comments on your experiences appreciated.

If your plans are to have the tires extending past the edges of the fenders, then IMHO the fenders would need to be cut (unless the car is so high that there would never be any contact of the tire to the fender). On my rear flare, I cut 2.5" off the top of the arch (same arch radius, except raised 2.5"). Then hammered the steel wheel well upward on the outside half of the well, to where it met the new arch, then I lapped the new arch around the edge of the raised wheel well, and welded the two together from front of the arch to the rear to bring the unibody rigidity back. The new lip is now more of a 90 degree joint of the wheel well and quarter panel. The flare then covers this because it is well below (about 2") this point.

Terry's right bout the cutting of the fenders. Also, flares can be purchased from Motorsport Auto, Jim Cook Racing(where I got mine with the side skirts) and Arizona Z just to name a few. Most of them are fiberglass. Mine are IMSA type with the rear of the flare squared off to the body of the car. This gives the car a wider fuller look. IMHO!!

I just finished roughing in the passenger side front fender flare on my fiberglass front end tonight... Check my post with info from MAS racing products.. their flares are half the price of the others offered. I think the quality was good, and I hope to hang the drivers side unit tomorrow night. On the rear flares on my car we cut the fender out to give more clearance. The metal flares would work much better on metal body panels as I think it was Terry that mentioned before, bonding glass to metal is not as ideal as glass to glass... BTW, it took me less than 3 hours to trim the lip on the front fender, basically removing the lip all together, mounting the flares, sanding and then glassing in the seam, and sading it down to where I can apply skim filler. Glass is so much more forgiving than metal!!!
