zero
I saw this article on autoblog today and looked a bit deeper into the NR750 and its engine. Oval pistons, two con-rods per cylinder, 8 valves per cylinder, 15,000 redline. 160-200 hp/L Pretty amazing. Just thought I'd share.
Xnke
Why not just run a V-8? Gotta be specifically to get around some 4-piston rule or something....
yetterben
Look into the saab sonnet. I have been looking for any of the Three series they made of these for years and have never come across more than a nose cone for a series 3 Edited March 17, 2010 by yetterben
mobythevan
I wonder how flame front collision works in the oval cylinders? EDIT: I see the center is high so quench must eliminate the flame front issue.
MAG58
Why not just run a V-8? Gotta be specifically to get around some 4-piston rule or something.... It was. They were not allowed to run a 'V8' in their class. Sooo, they just merged 8 cylinders into 4 and went racing. Solid bit of lateral thinking if you ask me. Xnke
I agree, there isn't a reason to do it otherwise, but when the rules say "4 cylinders only" It doesn't mean the cylinders need to be round. kinda like the Napier Deltic...three cranks, 9 cylinders, 18 pistons. Rules said "MUST FIT IN THIS BOX" so Napier made them fit, any way he had to.
strotter
Though it might have been done earlier, Honda did this in the late 70's - even sold a few bikes (ostensibly) for the street. Check this out.
S130Z
What happens when you break a ring and damage the cylinder? Bring it to the local machine shop and stick it in the oval bore machine? Oversized pistons.....I think not!
MAG58
Here's an oh so very early 90's video they made for the NR750. IMO It's a funky sounding motor, and if you look at the way the intake is designed, it really does resemble a V8 more than any 4cyl.
