PETEW
I called Tire rack to get one of the fender rollers, so I can drive my car w/o rubbing the tires. The guy tells me there is a 3 month wait! All the BMW's are using it so they can get 255's up front and 285's in the rear. So what are the other options for a guy with minor body experience. I would love to see some after pics too. Does the baseball bat really work, or is using a rubber mallet better?? Thanks for the help guys.
Guest scca
i'vealways just used a hammer. start at one end of the lip. (generally only rears need this) gently tap thelip up and do a bit at a time so all the lip gets moved in gradually. dont do only one section thats 4" long and completely roll it in alone. as you gradually go along it will start to go easier. i've done quite a few this way and even did one car right after it was painted. he forgot to mention it before hand.. never even cracked the paint. just take it slowly. Guest Anonymous
I,ve used the base ball bat a time or two. It does work, just gently increase pressure until you get a feel for what it takes to move the metal. Good luck Mark
PETEW
SCCA, What kind of hammer are you using when bending in the lip. Are you using a rubber mallet, normal hammer, or what. I think I am going to give it a shot. I figure if I take my time I can't booger it up too bad. Thanks.
DavyZ
Rubber hammer is what I would use. Pete, use the search function to get a great thread from the past--about a year ago we had a great discussion on all methods for doing this. Be REALLY careful if you use a baseball bat since I have seen perfectly great Z showcars have a lumpy lip over the wheels because the owner worked too fast or didn't know what the heck he was doing. Tim240z
I've used a piece of steel tubing (same as baseball bat I guess) before with good results. The trick is to do it slowly and carefully. Obviously you will need someone to help you (pushing the car back and forth), take several runs on each well, doing a little bend at a time. Patience will pay off!! Heck, I've used a glass 500ml Coke bottle before, and that worked. Tim
Guest Aaron
In a Hot Rod Tips & Tricks article many moons ago, they suggested using a large socket. Wedge it between the tire and the lip, then use a ratchet to roll it across the tire. Work up to larger sockets until the lip out of the way. PETEW
Thanks for the tips guy. I am going to take it easy and see how it comes out. If it doesn't seem like its working out, I'll quit and what for the tool. I think rolling it won't be too big a deal. I'll let you know after this weekend. z ya
I would go and practice out at pick in pull before you try your z. That way if it looks like crap , oh well!!!!!
Guest scca
i've tried the bat, piece of roolbar tubing before etc.. none of these will roll the lip up TOTALLY.. it may clear your tire a bit -- but the tires will compress almost as much as the fender lip - maybe if you pump 70psi into them they wont? i use a regular hammer . a rubber mallet would be too big and get difficult to negotiate - the ideal choice might be a soft blow sand filled hammer but i have never bought one as of yet. if you go slow and tap lightly you wont have a problem. RPMS
I dunno about you guys, but I just attacked mine with a regular claw hammer. I was sick and tired of hearing the scrape and rub of tires in the back on my BMW, so I just took the tire off and started whanging away. (Don't ask me why I did something so rash, because I have absolutely no idea!) The visible sheetmetal will take an astonishing amount of abuse without distorting. The fender lips are now completely rolled, with no visible damage to the outside.
Owen
I think the tire would compress in when you used the bat or pipe, but in case you're wondering how it's done... http://www.venommotorsports.com/howto/fenderroll.htm Owen

I sould have clarified, my rubber hammer is filled with lead shot, and is the best soft-dead blow hammer I have ever used. Funny thing is, I cannot remember where I purchased it Griots Garage I think? Davy
