  3. Sorry for the lack of updates! For the last few weeks I have been working 10 hour days... everyday except weekends and on the weekends there has been either: a. Family problems b. Heat index of 100+ degrees... tried sandblasting in that, but I almost killed myself from the lack of air flow through the respirator c. Rain... lots and lots of rain.. d. No time Yes, we have been filtering our sand a couple times... after the third round the sand becomes pretty useless. I am wishing I hadn't torn down the Z. I only drove it twice before tearing it apart. Now I'm regretting it. Anyway, here is what is going on. Depending on work tomorrow, I'll pick up the sheets of 18g steel I ordered. We still have yet to finish blasting the Z. the interior and very few spots on the bottom, and a quick spray over the body. School starts the 21st, so... this only leaves one weekend to blast and a few of the partial days. That sucks... So, depending on weather etc. we'll finish blasting the Z and pickling it with picklex20. Then we will buy some DTM epoxy primer and paint it at the neighbors shop. Once we do that we will actually start body work. Replacing floor pans, etc., etc. Our neighbor owns a body shop and said he would teach me how to do a bunch of the stuff pertaining to body work and paint. He's supposedly going to show me how to paint the Z and allow me to paint it in his shop. Anyway... I would like to get it into at least the epoxy primer... because I don't like the steel shell sitting out. It hasn't started rusting, but... I don't want to risk it. Thanks for reading. I hope that eventually this will become a very complete and enjoyable log for anyone looking to restore/tear down their Z car.

  5. Date: 7/15/06-7/16/06 Time Spent: 8 hours Parts: - none Cost: -none What was done: Well, continued blasting the areas on the bottom that were missed/ wouldn't come up last time. The rear panel (near the bumper) has some deep rust on it. That is taking a lot of time. Some other areas with deep rust are taking a lot of time also. Starting to frustrate me... especially when I already have 18 hours on the bottom alone. My oh my. The bottom is not even completely finished yet. There are still some areas with the tar, and the rear (near the bumper/spare wheel well) has a bunch of deeper rust that is taking forever to come off. Then there are those nooks that just don't seem to want to come off. Well, towards the beginning of 7/16/06 something happened to the compressor. The compressor tank will not compress more than 60psi. We have to figure what the problem is. So, once we get the problem with the compressor figured out, the blasting will continue. Once the bottom is "completely" finished, I plan on moving to the engine bay/ interior. Once those are finished, the exterior. We are currently looking for someone in the area that sells 18 guage steel. I have a couple questions pertaining to body work. - How do you do leading (using lead instead of body filler) - How hard is it to replace floor pans? We'll probably be making our own. I've heard that the floorpans are structural... what do you do when cutting the existing panels out? - The rocker panels are pretty close to being shot, especially the corners... where can I get replacement panels? - Installing a fuel cell isn't very hard is it? haha, just playing Problems: - compressor broke - bottom is taking forever and a half to blast - sand everywhere Pictures: High Resolution Pictures (Beware 56k): Link: - none Thanks for your time, Z0wner

Well, soon I'll be purchasing some body styling for my Z... question is... - what's the quality of the kits from http://www.zcarparts.com? - how do the items fit? do they need modification, or do they go on fairly simple? Here is what I am planning on purchasing. Well, ran out of time today because I had some stuff come up. So, not all that I planned on doing was done. I was able to spray a wheel well, and that was about it. Some touch-up, but not much. Either sometime during this week the underside be finished up, or this upcoming weekend. Because there wasn't much done, I have decided not to post any pictures.   8. Date: 7/7/06 - 7/8/06 Time Spent: 8 hours Parts: - 800 lbs of black beauty blast media Cost: - I'm going to put a price sheet up tomorrow, hopefully... for blast media and rotisserie. What was done: I blasted and blasted the underbody of the vehicle... took so long, and still am not completely done. We did get the majority done, so I'm happy. Hopefully tomorrow the underside+engine bay will be completely blasted. We did have some gnarly rust spots... rocker panel, floor pans, passenger firewall near floor pan, battery tray. There was a little bit of rust in other spots... Nothing to nasty though, especially when compared to some other members' vehicles. The frame rails are top notch though. Only some surface rust. It does look like one of the previous owners jacked up the car in the wrong spots and crimped some of the metal. The vehicle is nice and straight though, so I'm happy. The ?subframe rails? are also in top condition! there is no rust on those bad boys... well what we can see at this point. So, we won't need to replace them! Hurray! We plan on replacing the floorpans, and patching in the other panels as soon as we finish blasting the vehicle. Hopefully, that will be done fairly soon. Problems: - Well, just some gnarly rust.   9. Date: 7/4/06 Time Spent: 3 hours Parts: - None Cost: - Guy was at the shop, but did not have the price figured out... 9/10ths of the law is what?... man... hmm... What was done: Took the rear suspension off, and lifted the vehicle to where it is going to stay. Did start scraping away at the underside, but that isn't in the pictures. It was a beautiful day. We will be starting bodywork real soon! Get the vehicle completely sandblasted and pickleXed... patch what needs to be patched... Use lead to fill in little dings/etc... Its going to be a fun time. Starting to think about what we are going to do for body kit, etc. Thinking about bolt-on flares, fiberglass front/rear bumpers... some type of airdam (type 3 msa?) headlight covers... that should probably do it just perfect Problems: - Busted my right nut... literally... a little more torque was used on a bolt than what was needed.
