  1. I did my engine compartment (sandblasted, treated with naval jelly per instructions,3 coats Rust Bullet,3 coats Herculiner)and believe I made a HUGE mistake. The surface is impermeable, and tough as nails, but the surface is way too rough, attracts dirt, making it way too hard to keep clean.A top coat to smooth the surface somewhat would be ideal,I was thinking a urethane paint, since Herculiner is a urethane based product.I've been looking into a boat paint called Brightside by Interlux. But am not sure if it will breakdown from the engine compartment heat.Any suggestions?

  2. Ask for old/build progress photos if possible.Bring a fairly weak magnet to check for bondo, fiberglass fixes, etc.I like to bring a small flashlight.Even on a sunny day or a well lit garage, getting a direct light source on closely inspecting areas, esp. undercarriage, really helps out quite a bit.Be on the lookout for fresh and/or thick undercoating....:weird:

  3. That Herculiner is some tough stuff.I gave the angle grinder a try,but once it heats up,it clogs the sanding disks almost instantly.I'll give the Corner Cat(palm sander)a go,but almost anticipating the same result. Can't hurt though. The surface after waxing was shinier and more slick, but the surface is still way too rough a texture.Question on my last post:(obviously coming from a paint novice:confused2 )Aren't most auto clearcoats mostly a polyurethane product?Since the surface is textured, instead of spraying, brushing coats probably wouldn't leave noticable brushmarks, also I would think adherence poly to poly would be ideal.I'd apply several thin coats for buildup, with a light scuff sand between, eventually making the surface a little smoother.Again, just a thought from someone basically teaching myself autobody, but seems feasible.Any thoughts, opinions, recommedations, welcome, and anticipated!

  4. Wax didn't have any effect, other that put a little shine on it!:icon12:Still way too rough.A couple brushon applications of some type of thicker clear/sealant would do it to fill some of the voids,I'm just not sure of some of the auto paint products out there in regaurds to consistency, adherence ability, etc.Herculiner is made up of a polyurethane paint, with rubber granules added. I'm beginning to think I've made a costly mistake on my engine compartment:icon_frow .....Any other possible methods?or recommended products?

  5. I went with the textured look and the durability of Herculiner bedliner in the engine compartment in the 240Z,(turned out nice, extremely tough,IMO)but the surfaces are very rough, and will make cleaning almost impossible. Are there any products that I could use like a thick clearcoat, possibly gelcoat, that would fill the textured surface a little for a smoother,'hammered' look, and to make cleaning easier?Any input, product info would be greatly appreciated!

  6. The process I used in the engine bay is as follows:

    1.Fixed rust areas,battery tray,frame rails,subframe connectors,etc.

2.Welded brace plates for swaybar reinforcement.

    3.Sanded entire engine bay.

4.Treated entire engine bay with Naval Jelly, per instructions.

    5.3 coats Rust Bullet.

    6.3 coats Herculiner Bedliner.

Step 7 is the question. The Herculiner is fairly rough, and it would be a pain to clean once dirty.I was thinking of a type of thick(possibly brushon)clearcoat to fill in the roughness and leave a smoother,'hammered' like texture, for ease of cleaning.Maybe a gelcoat?Any suggestions?

  7. In reguards to the main hoop,You have the back bar so you can recline the seats alittle and use a 5 point harness I assume.Under the back bar you have the diagonal bars tying into the rear subframe under the floor.Do these bars hamper the reclining of the seats?I've noticed alot of guys running a diagonal bar from the top of the hoop to the rear subframe/floor,cutting out the ability to recline the passenger seat.Would it be feasible to run a diagonal bar or an X bar from the top of the main hoop to the top of the rear strut towers and still maintain the strength of the single diagonal bar?

  8. You may have fouled out the glo plug too.I don't know what fuel you're running, but get the 20% nitro, don't get the 10%.I've had good luck setting the carb lean, get her started, then adjust for a more rich setting.Blue smoke is what you want to see.I've got the OFNA Dominator truck, with the Picco .26.Fun hobby, but like others said, expensive, and the engines are extremely tempermental.Very slight adjustments on the idle and enrichment screws go a long way...Good luck!
