Sven, I know that paticular Hot Rod issue. I inadvertently gave away that issue with a bunch of other magazines of mine to another HybridZ member. I can't get ahold of him. The car you mention was done by Dave Kent of the former Creative Car Craft shop. Do you still have that issue? If so, would you be able to provide me with the article of the California Z car - as it was named. Molds were made from that car and eventually kits were sold thru the late Jim Cook Racing company. Hey - I just realize that I have Jim Cook Racing's old catalog with the Cal Z pictures somewhere with my old school stuff! OTM! Congrats on the post count!!! I'll post pics later then. They're quite old and I need to be careful with the pages so they don't fall apart. I'm pleased to be able to share them. Thank you! By the way, that hatch on Evil's car (as Van mentioned) was made from cut sheet metal and bent with someone standing on a round pipe the length of the metal and Carl Green used his hands to put the bends in the panel. So - my point is that you don't need all the fancy tools - they're nice to have - but it doesn't mean you can't produce something with a little imagination!! Ernie/RacerX

Hi Van! Thanks for that info. I actually had the magazine article that did the entire buildup for EK! Carl Green did the customizing. I still have ingrained in my head how he made up the rear tail light section out of plastic. That car was named "Evil Eagle". You know! - I believe Evil's car was the first Zcar to have the drip rails removed when Carl started the cutomizing for EK's car. Thanks for the memories Van! Speaking of which - I came across some old pics of "creative customizing" back in 1978 of the Zcars. Zcars were very popular back then for "customizing" and there were quite a few vendors providing 'glass parts. If anyone is interested in seeing some of these pics - I'd be glad to post some - I just don't want to bore anyone with "old school" stuff! Ernie/RacerX

if you can install a particular engine into the Porsche 914 engine bay without having to hack up sheetmetal - wouldn't it then be conceivable that the same motor would fit within the 240Z engine compartment? Thanks, RacerX

In my research for "alternative" engines to swap into a Zcar - I was speaking with a High Performance Volvo Tuner this morning. I was talking about the 5 cylinder turbo (similar to the Audi Quattro) and inquired about his opinion to swap this into a Zcar. His comment; put a Toyota 2JZGTE. I asked why and his response was that the Toyota Supra Turbo motor was much easier to work on and would achieve much more power for the cost and efforts. The 5 cylinder is very difficult to work on and is about the same size as an inline 6 cylinder motor. He couldn't see spending the time and money to achieve lesser performance than the 2JZ. Interesting comment coming from a guy who specializes in Volvos!! I then spoke with a Jaguar specialist inquiring about the possiblity of swapping the I6 3.8 liter DOHC engine. I inquired about the weight of the 3.8 liter. His comment; stick to the Datsun engines, Jaguar motors belong in Jags!!! Click! He hung up on me - perhaps he hadn't had his coffee yet. Oh well - the search continues . . . . RacerX

This isn't a Zcar! It's a Hybrid in the sense that it's a Volvo powered Opel Manta. I like this model of Opel Manta. I'm sure you guys will appreciate the craftsmanship of this incredible vehicle. Most of it, if not all of it was handcrafted by the owner - what talent!! After having seen this car in action per the videos - I know it would work as well in the Zcar. I did a search and the 4 cyl Volvo DOHC engines has been a considered engine swap for the Zcar. Now imagine this motor in a Zcar - fantastic!!! Sure makes me drool when considering the incredible potential of this motor implanted into the Z. Yes, there are the other powerful motors like the SR20 turbo, but this swap, to my knowledge, hasn't been down in a Zcar yet. Any takers now??!!!!!!
