Kenzman: There is only one person I know of doing an RB engine swap into a Z in THE STATES, and thats Steve Webb (RB25DET)....All the above posts were from people who either live in Australia, or Japan. If It was Me? If I was certain that a 2JZ would fit into an early Z I would go that route. Because, They come with 6 speeds, They make just as much IF NOT MORE than an RB26 on stock internals, and they are cheaper. I am a car enthusiast, not a nissan enthusiast. If it fits, hauls arse, is cheaper, doesnt ruin the ride, and has a 6spd box vs 5spd.....then its the one for me. Ray

Talked to some Supra guys with big singles..
kalium99 replied to BLKMGK's topic in 6 Cylinder Z Forums
hmmmm.....that sounds awesome! I was actually reading a post on the skylines forum, and there was this guy in Australia, runnin an RB26DETT in his Z....had to get a bunch of guys to sit on the back of the thing as it was breaking traction on the dyno! Man I wish that they had USDM supra's in Japan....and that the turbo's were on the other side -
Yep, I was just about to say that you have contacts/access to parts over there in Okinawa...but If your going to live there then its going to be even easier. Retiring in your Mid 30`s...half your luck I would love to put a GN V6 turbo into my Z...but we never got that engine here (although we did get the non-turbo version).
-
Yeah true it would be an easier conversion that a lot of other engines... oh BTW...dont try and start a "At least its a nissan" here....judging by the name of the forum you wont have too many ppl on ur side
-
Why do people in the states even bother with the RB?! It seems to have got this reputation that it is the king of all engines. It seems to be a good engine, but not worth you guys paying ridiculous prices for them, andthen paying ridiculous prices for parts. You guys have your own Awesome engines, Toyota engines, Buick Turbo engines, L28ET, SBC, and others which I am sure I dont know about....

I'm thinking that the cheapest way is to get an old T3 turbo, seal up your SU's, get a cheapish intercooler, weld up ur own manifold and you've got a a blow through turbo. Wouldnt cost you too much either I shouldnt think (if you can do the work yourselfand can weld)

I still havent put my engine in the car yet, but I cant wait to take my dad for a rip in it when its done. He should have a blast. When I first got my Z car all those years ago (was 16 at the time!) I took it for a spin with my dad, flying along the Highway and my dad looks over at me, "How fast are we going?". I'm like..."uhhh...170Km/h", he just nods in approval, and then 5 seconds later he asks again and we are at 180km now...to which he replies "yeah thats probably fast enough"

1JZ came in two formats.....the twin turbo (NOT sequential) model in the MKIII supra's and soarer's, and also the Single Turbo Version (not sure which cars they came in, maybe a Mark II or something), which comes with VVTi. afaik, the single turbo is relatively new, and maybe still in production... they are fairly undersquare...about 86 x 76.. revvy little suckers. If they are a bit cheaper that the 2JZ stateside, than they could be well worth it. Ray

Who has the RB30ET with Motec? I will be back in Brisbane for the nationals with either my RB26 or 2JZ

Seeing as we are speaking of Aussie 260Z's...I have a 76...are these the 'old style' 240, or the later 280 look? I have never seen a 280Z in person, the only difference I can tell between mine and a 240 is that its a wee bit bigger.....which I like actually Ray

Hi, I have recently become interested in doing a blowthrough setup just for fun. I am eventually putting a 2JZ or RB26 into my Z, but in the mean time I am looking for a project and was thinking of trying a blowthru setup with twin 2" SU's. I have been through the archives, and one thing which ppl complain about is trying to tune the setup, but I didnt read that anybody was using a fuel pressure regulator that varies as a function of boost. Would this not somehow alleviate the problem if you could always have a constant relative fuel pressure to the intake pressure ? I can get a newly rebuilt T3 with external wastegate for $150USD, and I have a set of twin 2" SU's lying around. I figure that the project would not be TOO expensive. Probably just the turbo, intercooler, piping, mods to the exhaust manifold, ignition retarder, fuel pressure regulator, pumps etc etc, and time to mod and tune the SU carbies... I am not looking for an awesome power beast, otherwise I would be going EFI. What do you guys think? Cheers Ray

MY word that car is a piece of crap!! I guess it all comes down to weather or not the particular carbie can handle the pressure needed to keep the right A/F ratio. He had a holly 600 and was using an injector as well, but he was runing a 10 second twinturbo V8...which would need a ton more fuel than an L28. I guess I will have to have a closer look at the 2" Su's and do a bit more research on them. Thats actually where I got the idea for the blow-through turbo, from Corky Bell's book. That Triple Mikuni Blow through turbo setup looks absolutely dreamy! Cheers Ray

opps...hang on...the turbo's are on the RH side of the supra...damn, I hope that doesnt make anything more difficult

Hmm...I should have paid more attention to those Zupra pics. One thing to remember though, is that if there are any problems with the turbo/manifold and the steering running into each other....I probably wont have them as my Z is RHD Congrats on the Supra! They are an awesome car! I am planning on buying one here and taking it back to australia...to sell that is. If ever you are out in the engine bay and you happen to be holding a tape measure, I would appreciate it if you could write down the dimensions Cheers Ray

Anybody actually done this swap or no any contact info of someone who has? It is coming close to the time when I need to decide between the 2JZ and RB. At the moment the 2JZ is still cheaper (I am in Tokyo), so I am leaning this way... I know it has been done, I have seen pics of it. Somebody must know some more details about it though?! Cheers Ray

Opel Manta ?! The one on the left (are they the same?) looks suspiciously like a Holden Gemini..... Ray

This is exactly what I am looking at as well now. The 1JZGTE seems to be cheaper than the RB25DET, but just as powerful. The 7MGTE has crossed my mind as well. I am hoping to get away with about $6000AUD to buy my engine and get it running with aftermarket ECU. I will be doing most of the installation myself. Its still a bit of a toss up though between the 1JZGTE, RB25DET, 7mGTE...decisions decisions

HI, I have only recently became interested in a V8 swap into my 260z. I have considered just about every other engine swap out there, weighed up the cons and pros, but I have never felt quite comfortable with the thought of any of them (in terms of my goals and cost). First of all, I live in Australia, so chevy V8 arent as plentiful as they are for you american guys. Despite that though, I am still interested in the JTR swap. First of all. Is it too much bother ti try making the kit components myself? or should I just get them shipped to me from JTR in the US? Also, what is the hadling of a JTR V8 really like? And if it is good, what sort of suspension mods do you need to get it that way. I am planning on spending a bit over $3000 US on the engine conversion (about $5-$6000 AUD). I can (well my dad can) do just most things needed to be done with a welder, so I guess if mod/fabrication comes up than that should not be too big of a drama (handy having a dad who welds for a living). Is the conversion possible with this sort of money. Any feedback is appreciated. Thanks kal

Ahh yes !! I have heard of him. I remember reading somehting about him, a Damn fast RB26 240Z and motech dealership in Japan...cant remeber the details though
-
I am moving back to home-town Brisbane next year...which is when I am doing the conversion. Say...do you have that guys contact number or e-mail ? I would like to have a talk to him regarding the swap...at least I know it has been done Cheers
-
Hi, Not sure if you guys in the US got his engine, but in Australia we used to have a car called the Valiant E49 Charger. This cars engine was a straight six, hemi designed engine of the 60`s-70`s muscle era. It boasted 300HP standard and to this day is still the fastest production car Australia has ever seen. I am becoming interested in maybe putting one of these things in a Z...anyone have ideas/thoughts/opinions ?? Cheers !!

hmmm...even if you do have connections in Japan, things arent always so cheap, but I guess its the only option that you would have.Me personally, If I lived in the states I would never buy an RB26DETT...simply because of the price of parts. If a shop was to get parts for you, I guess they could charge you whatever they like, as there arent going to be many other ways to get the parts. However, luckily I dont have to worry SO much about that as luckily I am not in the US. Ray

Actually, They were not Sold In Australia from the showroom, but they were in New Zealand. WHy not look at an RB25DET? THat is what I am planning on. You can make 200kw at the wheels or maybe even more(dont know anyone who has puched in much beyond this on stock everything internal) with the stock internals. They are also MUCH cheaper. In Australia they are HALF the price of an RB26DETT.
