funny you should metnion a manual transmission for the VH45DE. 240sx VH45De swap someone jammed one into a 240sx. its a thread on NICO. ignore the first post, it gets interesting about 1/4 way down the page. interesting exhaust system. I wouold like to see more of this far east wonder-z. that looks like the true Akuma No Z! I bet its a straight up weapon on the highway. McAdam

welcome to the club, datsun280Zmike!! to answer your question, even tho they change a lot for the 280ZX from teh earlier 280Z's, the transmission and engine mounts remained the same. It is a direct bolt in. its prettymuch as simple as replacing the stock motor. also, the 280ZXT motors can take quite a bit of abuse! have fun with it! McAdam

a big, stinking pile of bullshit. recently a mercedes 280E came into a local pic-n-pull. It had a dual cam, 2 valve per cylinder, crossflow head. mechanical fuel injection and a "110" series motor. I pulled the head hoping that all the rumors that have been floating around the internet for years were true, but alas, they are not. I took the head apart and snagged the headgasket, took it over to where I pulled the LD28 block out, and put it up against the LD28 head, which granted isnt exactly the same as our venerable L series head.... but for comparison purposes.... the headbolts are all wrong, the coolant passages are wayyyy off AND! the head is about an inch shorter (length-wise) than the L head. bore spacing is NOT the same. so, back to square one, and the KADE head idea..... wow, it'll be sad to see you go man! you are an inspiration to us all! hybrid or not, a 240Z in the 10's....... why not just go with a 280zx? should be able to use all your drivetrain and then you'll have the nicer ride, cruise, even a digital dash, if you so desire! lol stick around man, you know you're always welcome here!! well, the way I see it is to just cut about 1/4" away from teh outer walls of the cylinder head, weld up the inner walls (coolant passages) then close up the outer walls. Laser welding wont work. I called around to a few places last year looking to do this. I was gonna use KA24E heads cause thats what I had 2 of sitting in my garage at the time. They told me that it would be no problem if it werent for the fact that cylinder heads are made out of a mix of scrap metal and garbage apearently. too many metals in the head and too many anomolies. If it was a pure aluminum head, it would have worked. heh, I wish that were the case, as they quoted me about $70 a weld. and Id only need 2 of em. ah well. this'll work just as well. McAdam

nissan makes a few deisels that I know of. I dont know about V type engines, but they make some nice I6 engines. One of them is an LD28, it came in the 1981 to 1984 nissan maximas. its the engine that everyone grabs the crankshaft out of for thier 3.1L stroker motors. I have heard of people turbo-ing the deisel motor with good results. Another option is an SD33. they came in some international scouts in the late 70's and early 80's. there was also a turbo version for this motor. I would think that the SD would be the best bet. plus, Its got .5 motre liters and some have a stock turbocharger, not to mention people are still using them in industrial applications so parts are available. thye also made some 4 cylinder deislels that came in pickups in the early 80's, they were the SD25 and SD22. hope this helps, somewhat McAdam

I would not worry about compression. The N42 block/N47 head should have dished pistons, giving it an aenemic compression ratio of 8.3:1. The turbo specific L28's had a retardedly low, even for a turbo, cr of 7.4:1. You should be fine putting the L20ET turbo exhaust manifold on the N47 head. although I wonder if exhaust runner daimeter is the same or not, I know intake isn't. as far as the ECU, if you dont plan on running a lot of boost, I knwo people hbere in the US run the NA ecu for simplicities sake all the time when swapping into an early 280Z. I hope this helps.... McAdam

what about the 1987 to 1989 nissan 300zx turbo transmissions? I heard a rumor that they use the same gears and stuff as a 300zxTT 5spd. just different housings/tail. I know there was a dude that was running one in his 300KPH ultra high HP L28ET powered 280zx. Overboost (I think) did a story on it. pretty badass. McAdam

awwe, dammit! right in front of my freaking face!!!! thanks man! I "overlooked" that thread because I had assumed it only pertained to swap info, not hotrodding info, lol!! thanks again man! McAdam

I know someone out there did this, slapped a turbo exhaust manifold on the N/A RB25 head & short block. I read somewhere that it put down 430rwhp before is melted a piston? I have searched and I cannot find the post, could someone point me in the right direction? I am looking for this info for a freind that has an RB25DE shortblock going into his 240sx. it HAD an RB25DET, but the timing belt tensioner broke and, well, thats all she wrote for the head on that motor. Anyone>?>? thanks! McAdam

What are the pros/cons of building a turbo stroker motor?
Mack replied to mrcheeze36's topic in Turbo / Supercharger
thats great buying parts from overseas companies and all, if you have the money and a hookup over in the land of the rising sun. But how much is your motor going cost you in the end? I am stuck with junkyard parts, ever seen anyone build a stroker out of an LD28 block? I know I dont have the cash for forged rods and forged pistons. know why they use those custom pistons with custom ring packs? because the rod/stroke ratio on an L31 stroker motor SUCKS, thats why. Also, the correct "old school" way to build a 3.1L stroker was to use Honda XR500 motorcycle pistons and FJ20ET 140mm connectiing rods, which are as close to indestructable as you can get. FJ20ET rods and L20A rods are close in height only. also, "junkyard parts" can be balanced like any other parts. Junkyard parts are sometimes preferable to brand new shiny parts. The BMW F1 team in the early 80's used to scour junkyards for blocks for their motors because they had already been heat cycled and were stronger than a brand new block. McAdam -
yeah, what they said! dont give up. it could be something retardedly simple. I had a 1986 200sx turbo that was leaking coolant out the side of the head and would smoke on occasion, so i swore a lot and tore it down, ready to replace the heagasket and what did I find? it wasn't a blown headgasket but a hairline crack on the coolant line to the turbo that was spraying just right on the side of the seam of the head and block. that REALLY pissed me off. oh well. so, check your turbo! if your cartridge was bad, who knows, it could have a bad seal pouring coolant into the exhaust side of the turbo and hosing yoru engine bay at the same time... What are the pros/cons of building a turbo stroker motor?
Mack replied to mrcheeze36's topic in Turbo / Supercharger
interesting, very interesting..... so, what to do, what to do... Ive got this damned LD28 short block. there was some mention of rod/stroke ratio in this thread.... I have a cure! Z20E rods (152.5mm long) or Z20S rods(148.6mm). LD28 block, L20b timing cover and timing gear. only problem is I need to find a piston with a 33.5mm(if I use Z20E rod) or 37.4mm(if I use Z20S rod) pin height and I am looking at an 87 or 87.5mm bore. I know with a stock 280zx turbo piston +1mm I should be safe shaving .7mm off the top.... input anyone? McAdam -
got myself an LD28 short block for $70. anyone care to take a guess on how far this thing can be overbored? like, would 88mm be too much? stock is 84.5, but I remember someone saying that the LD28 block had much thicker cylinder walls than any other L28. something to do with the deisel. long rod stroker motor!! yay! who knows where from there. I am thinking I can get it up and running with j/y parts (except for the pistons) for under $300 total. we'll see McAdam

how many miles were on the bottom end? i think the cam was the limiting factor there. Also, my head has minor valve bowl work where I cleaned up a few of the shapr ridges in there. It should be fun. hopefully I'll have it done in time for the local 240sx clubs dyno day. McAdam
-
lol! yes, the cam woulndt have that much duration for long! But, yes the 260Z had an oil spray bar. I snagged that along with the cam towers off of the E88 head. I also pulled all rocker arms and kept them in order, along with lash pads. I got the complete set-up for $25, lol!! its going in the car in about a week or so. McAdam

o.k. so I picked up a KILLER deal on an RB25DE N/A. we'll just say under $500. its a long block with most sensors, intake and exhaust. no wiring ECU or any of the likes. has all coil packs tho., only thing it is missing is the coil pack cover and the throttle body is damaged. thing I want to know is.... what transmission options are there if I dont want to use/source an RB tranny? I have heard rumors of a VG transmission working. also, any stock mounts I can use without getting the 200zr mounts? like, perhaps NAPS Z series motor mounts? since it is basically an L motor, without the offset, just a thought.... this will more than likely end up under the hood of a 280zx. for the computer and wiring..... I have it from a good source that the RB25DE shares 99.9% of its pinouts with a 1992 to 1994 maxima SE VE30DE. there just so happens to be one in a local salvage yard. thats all I can think of for now.... McAdam p.s. so, an RB25DE N/A will take a turbo manifold and turbo abuse? I read the sticky. didn't cover much in the way of RB25DE NA/s, lol it did however, list that someone threw a turbo manifold on an N/A and laid down 4430rwhp for over a year before he melted a piston......

I was browsing some Aussie car sites and happened upon the ford falcon XR6T. damn. 4.0L straight 6, 24valve DOHC, cam phasing on intake and exhaust, roller followers. ball bearing turbo. something retarded like 322hp at 6psi. has anyone else looked at this>? is it based on a jaguar or aston marten straight 6? what gives! lol looks pretty sweet. perhaps some of the Aussie guys can chime in? McAdam

well, like someone on here siad, the M30 R200 isn't a VLSD unit, I just had to find out for myself. pulled it all apart and the only thing is has is 4 spider gears for some god forsaken reason. sure looks like an LSD when you pull off the rear cover and take a quick peek! lol anyway..... here is a dumb idea.... so, it has a 47:12 ratio, or about 3.92. it shares this ratio and teeth count with the infiniti J30. ALL J30's have VLSD, its a known fact. so, can I take the guts out of a J30 short snout R200 VLSD and swap it into the M30 long snout R200? how do the input shafts work on a VLSD? are they specific to the VLSD? I know that I could probably pull the ABS sensor off of the M30 diff to make it the exact same lenght as the Z R200's. I am just looking for a cheaper alternative to the Uber rare, Uber expensive 300zx turbo LSD. besides, VLSD sounds like fun, especially for a street car. McAdam

well, stockers put down about 125rwhp in gooood shape, most are putting down in the high 1 teens. as in about 118rwhp. so, if bastaad525 was laying down 150rwhp, thats about a 30rwhp jump in stock, which would be damn good! that'd be about what, 40 flywheel hp? I plan on doing prettymuch the same thing. except I am using a maxima N47 which should be good for about 10.5:1 and has nicer chambers. that and I am also installing a 260Z "C" stamp cam. 256 degrees duration on both sides. which would be a nice 16 degree jump over a stock late model P79 cam. I'll be happy with about 160rwhp. McAdam

funny you should mention the desiel block! I was looking into that and already had a motor lined up, but then they crushed the car before I could buy it, boo hoo! The LD28 motor has the same deck height as the L20B 4 cylinder. you have to use that timing cover, and it bolts on. a board member here by the name of DAW has an LD28 converted to gas using the stock internals and putting a gas head on. I wanted to use the LD28 to get a decent rod/stroke ratio.. custom cranks and cylinder liners are spendy business. but, i suppose you could do it. only problem is, stock bore on teh LD28 is 84.5mm, so, you could really not get a big bore on this motor. and I dunno if it would match up to combustion chamber for an 89mm bore engine. just a thought.. McAdam

yup, that old P.O.S. maxima deisel wagon has the heart of the stroker motor, the crankshaft. 81 to 84 maxima desiels. as long as its got a deisel and its an L6, pull it! and if you want to get rid of the rods after your done, I'd be glad to take em off your hand for ya! its a little pet project..... be forewarned, a stroker project is by no means cheap or easy. just ask around. You'll need some L24 rods and I am sure you already have a line on some KA pistons, lol! also, if you dont want to go thru all the hassle of switching pistons, you can get a head from a gas powered maxima of the same vintage and put your heads intake valves in it and pick up a similar boost in compression, without shaving or shimming. McAdam

HA ha! that looks like a prop from an old "Road Warrior" movie! nice pic McAdam

hey, I was browsing zcar.com and found this in the classifieds section... VQ35DE just a heads up incase anyone is interested... McAdam

well, all I can say is that in DOHC motors, the higher the HP the more duration. like, when people start to get crazy with their SR's and RB's, out come the 256, 264 and even 272 degree cams. duration is o.k., overlap is what turbos dont like. with the 112 degree lobe centers, I think the guy at gude has a good idea. It just might work! How much is he asking for the cam? Is it a profile that is specifically made for the L series valve train geometry? I know there is a guy on here that has one in his 3.1, specifically made for L series. pushing 7000rpm redline on single springs. of course, don't listen to me. I am gonna run a stock "C" stamp 256 degree cam when I get my turbo stuff all put togethor. someone said the "evil" exhaust liners would act as an anti reversion device, so I'll put that theory to work! meh, if I blow it, so be it. its only an NA short block, dime a dozen.
