everyone does have thier own thing, and I have my own opinion. I didnt say everyone on that site was a bunch of posers, just most, or most I SAW. I know Mattback is a mod on there, he is very knowledgable, especially in the realm of 240sx's. AS far as Z's, thats my own thing. well, that and frankensteining nissan engines. made my own CA18DET, you know. and will be making a 18 valve crossflow L6 head soon, as soon as I find someone to cast me a camshaft blank. appearently, KA24E rocker pads dont like steel billet. cast iron, grumble grumble...... I have my own thing, and its RWD and has some real performance potential, thank god! Sorry, I just got a little worked up, probably more so than you stony! It just pisses me off to see a guy like you put all your time and money into a car like yours (VERY nice btw, one of theses days.........) and then see some punk come along, who probably cant even find the oil filter on his own car, and claim its his. oh well, enough rambling. McAdam p.s. I know I have all the spelling acuity of an 8th grader, thank god for spell check!!

have you ever read that site? like I said, I am sure there are some cool people on ther, but for the most part, they are posers. I mean common, stealing someones website and claimning the car on there to be yours? half the posts are "I had a wangan last night on the freeway! It was me vs. 3 suped up metros. I kicked them all in my prelude!" they are posing to be car saavy people. they are also posing to be from japan. or they think they are in japan. I dunno, just not my cup of tea. from half the posts I read, I imagine these peoiple to have cars with HUGE ings and hideously oversezed fart can exhaust pipes with millions of yellow and red stickers. just my take McAdam

what a choad! I knew you wouldn't associate yourself with that board! I saw it cause I am interested in wangan midnight, the manga. thought Id give it a shot. Man, what a bunch of posers on that board! you gotta read it, its funny as hell! I mean I am sure there are some genuine car nuts on that board, like mattback, but almost everyone on that board sucks. its I ahd a wangan this, wangan battle that, hachi roki that, dori dori that. they use all this JDM slang like they know what the hell they are talking about and they dont. I';ll help you rip on this guy if ya want, Stony McAdam

GIve me some time, I have 2 KA24E motors that have rods thru the blocks. I'll take one of the heads into a machine shop and have a cylinder lopped off of the end so we can get a good cross section view of it so we know how hard it will be to weld up all of the oil/coolant passages. I really think that this is the best route. plus, all we need then is motor mounts from a Z series motor (Z20, Z22, or Z24) and a bellhousing from the same that should take care of the "slant" on the motor. Also, KA24E's are CHEAP and abundant! the KA24E head WILL bolt on to a L20B 4 cyl. so, it is very feasible. The biggest bitch I think will be having the 2 cams hacked up and re-welded into one long L6 cam and getting the timing right. McAdam Majors

Yup, its a belt, all RB';s are belts. however, a RB25 head with VVT on an RB30 block is good for a ton of HP. I saw a website with one that was puting out 360hp, N/A
-
another vaible alternative to a 24 valve head would be to get an old LY series crossflow head. I beleive the head alone was worth something like 18%hp gain. compy that, uses all stock valve train and timing components. even tho it is still only SOHC, youd still have people lined up around the block to buy the damn thing. OR....... If you are good at CAD, use the RB series head as a starting point nd just design the thing with the coolant passages and oil passages to meet the ones on the L block. and since the RB and L bore spacing is the exact same, you can use RB series cams and valve train parts, which opens up the whole damn JDM aftermarket to us. oh yeah, to have a prototype made, I beleive the process is called Laser Lithography? they have a vat of plastic that turns solid if you burn it with a laser and the laser is computer controlled, it runs off of a 3D cad program, it builds the prototype one 1mm layer at a time. I would but I am too lazy and I lack resources. McAdam

I hate to burst your bubble, but this has been looked into. I remember reading about an engine tuning house in australia that had been trying the very same thing. At last I heard they had dumped roughly $40,000 into it and still hadn't gotten it to work. here is an RB26DETT block.. http://www.exvitermini.com/pics/1905blk.jpg here is an L28E head gasket, post 81 http://www.superiorgasket.com/HG-L28E-81.jpg here is an L28Eup to 81 http://www.superiorgasket.com/HG-L28E-75.jpg they arent even close. look at all the coolant holes AROUND the cylinders on the RB block. there are no holes in the L block for this to flow. My best guess was to take 2 KA24E heads and lop one cylinder off each, have them welded end to end. But making a camshaft for that monster woudl be a task on its own. btw, heres the KA24E gasket http://www.superiorgasket.com/HG-KA24E-89.jpg which is retardedly similar to the L series gaskets. Infact, i had a KA24E that blew up so I took it apart and got the headgasket out of it and it matches hole for hole up to my L28 head gasket. except for the whole 4 cyl vs. 6 cyl thing. sorry for the long post McAdam

hey, I am interested in this swap as well. I have heard rumors that an infiniti J30 cross member will bolt into a 240sx. the J30 uses a VG30DE. but I have no way of checking because there are no infinitis in the junk yards up here. maybe if your in a major metropolitan area you could find one and check. then the only problem becomes engine bay clearance. There is a guy over at teh 240sx forum at Freshalloy.com, his name is mattback and he is making his own mounts for the swap. you could try and contact him. good luck McAdam

forgot to add, Ross racing pistons offers fairly decent priced stuff. Like $550 foir a set of 6 and these are FORGED. and those are reg prices, not group buy stuff, anyone have anything good or bad to say about ross pistons?? cheers, McAdam
-
I'm interested, but timing is crucial here, lol. money doesn't flow that well for me, given a little lead time tho, I could scrimp together $500 for a nice set of pistons. Heres what I'm doing, deisel block, Z20E rods length 152.2mm, deisel crank, which leaves me needing a piston of 87.5mm bore and a 33.5mm pin heigth for a Zero deck clearance. and I get my 2995cc motor with my 1.837 rod/stroke ratio. forged would be good, but if I use the stock replacement pistons in an overbore size and just go NA or a little boost for now, I'll be good. so, i dunno, sorry for rambling and let me know! cheers, McAam

no one knows how far you can take a piston without affecting the structural integrity?
-
Hello, I am building an engine with the tax refund money and I need a piston with a pin height of 33.5mm and a bore of 87.5mm, I know the Z22S pistons are 87mm bore witha 35.5 pin height, could I use these and take 1mm off and use a 2mm head gasket? or could I just take 2mm off the top of the piston without too many adverse side effects? I am building this motor on a budget so, custom pistons are out of the question, and its going to be NA for a while, when I get money, I am going custom and turbo... So, anyone? how bout Norm? I know hes done some stuff like this... thanks in advance, McAdam Majors

Actually, to chuck my $.02 in, from what I ahve read on the electramotive motor and the FJ20ET motors, they used 140mm rods, much like the NISMO rods of the day. which also, I am told, bear a striking resembelance to the 140MM deisel rods out of the maxima, which are parts most just toss out, interestingly enough. If your concerned about rod/stroke ratio, do what I am planning on doing, USE the deisel block, with its superior deck height and a set of 152.5MM Z20E con rods and then get some custom pistons witha 33.5mm compression height and a 87.5mm bore, 1.84:1 rod/stroke ratio in a 3.0L motor with some serious torque! Or use the stock block, punch it out to 89mm, toss in a 240Z crank and some 140MM deisel rods and get yourself 300ZX VG30E pistons in 1mm overbore for a 2.7L motor that screams, or if you could find, a 2mm overbore VG30E piston at 89mm for a 2.8L motor. rod/stroke ratio on this beast would be a whopping 1.9:1, oh yeah, youd have to shave .75mm off the top of the pistons, no biggie tho... where is my damn tax refund check!?!?!? lol McAdam
-
someone had a deisel maxima they had converted to run on gas, I was just wondering how it was running, as I am planning a long rod deisel block motor for my Z. I know they had to re drill the head bolt holes out to 12mm instead of 10mm. other than that , any other modifications to the block or head? thanks in advance! McAdam

http://www.z31.com/~morgan/nd/?z/awd1000hp240z.jpg theres the link to the AWD 240Z also I would like to see someone here stateside do a RB30Det. give those 2Jze boys a run for the money. I think you should go with the RB26 head as opposed to the RB25, more flow better ports. keep us posted McAdam

this whole O.S. Giken thing go tme thinking.... WHy cant I build my own? so, as I sat and looked out at my vast feild (well, not that vast)of non-running nissans, I spied my 2 240sx coupes, both with blown motors due to timing chain buide collapses, plugs up the oil pick up, and blam, rod thru the block. SO, I have 2 SOHC 12 valve heads and my wheels start turning.... especially after I see this thread head thread So, I email good ole Dave and he says a KA24E 12 vlaver WILL fit on a L20B, so if it fits on an L20B, If I cut and hack 2 heads togethor it will fit on a L24, 26, 28, 30, 31. I think the best plan of action will be to cut one head in half, then cut cyl 1 and 4 off of the other, then stick the remaining cyl 3 and 4 inbetween the halves of the first head and somehow have it welded up. And then do the necessary cut and weld job on the cams to turnb 2 4 cyl cams into a 6 cyl cam. might be tricky, but I think it'll work. This accomplishes a few things. 1. we now have a cross-flow head. 2. It uses STOCK nissan valve-train parts 3. Its still SOHC, so no ultra trick chain drives are needed. only thing is front cover will have to be modded. 4. 2 34mm intake valves and 1 40mm exhaust valves? I can live with that! let me know what you think. P.S. this should work. the 510 guys put L heads on Z20, Z22 and Z24 blocks, and they put Z20, Z22 and Z24 heads on L blocks. The Z series head gaskets and the KA-E head gaskets look EXACTLY the same. all I need now is money.
-
is it possible to put VG30DETT rods onto an L series crankshaft? what needs to be done to them to make them fit? they are the right length that I need for my application, and with a .5mm overbore set of TT pistons, I'll have my 3.0 L6. Ah, the deisel block is a wonderous thing! long rod L6 here I come!~

******warning! no Z content****** I need to know a few things about the 5.0, I am doing a 5.0 swap on an 88 RX7 convertible. rotaries are rotten. How the hell does a motor go bad sitting on the shelf?!? I'll tell you how, the teflon coating on the rotor housings flake off and bugger up the seals and your left with 60lbs of compression in both rotors. enough ranting. 1. Will a '94 5spd off of a 3.8 v6 stang fit on an 89 GT 5.0? bellhousing matches the motor, but which starter to use? clutch? 2. Any useful sites you can think of right off hand to get a computer for this beast? how bout wiring diagrams? upgrades for the efi? 3. I have checked out grannys speed shop conversions, they seem reasonable, but are there any others? I need to know what wires to splice where in this mess..... thanks in advance, you guys are really good when it comess to Z's and generally us non Z'ers are well received as well. Although I have a 72 240Z that will be getting a twinturbo frankenstein L6....

I have heard that this was a big thing over in japan for a while, just thought I would see if any of you guys have heard of it? from what I ahve heard, you use the Honda XL500 piston 89mm bore, and the desiel crank, and a FJ20ET rod (144mm, I beleived) if that is true, it must have a low pin height, which would solve the whole rod stroke ratio thing, and you can get these pistons from weisco fairly cheap and theyt are forged!! if anyone has ANY info on this, please, feel free to share! McAdam

Just ask Norm what he has done, as i recall, he hasn't done much to his motor to get his 240Z into the 12's. that should be more than enough to embarass some GM 350's, as long as its not a new vette. and if you REALLY wanna blow them away, put in a skyline motor. that would run you about 5 to 6 large tho. happy hunting! McAdam

hey all, i just heard back form the dudes at OkinawaImportPerformance, heres what they had to say..... Hi this is Brian from OIM sorry for the late reply!! We been swamped!! below are answers to your questions! Brian OIM Hi, I was on your site and it said you sell RB's for $3500 with the gearbox, wiring harness and computer, correct? I am considering this motor fot an engine swap into my first generation Datsun 240Z, I have a few questions.... 1. how much would just the engine, no wiring harness or transmission, cost? $2800.00 2. for this swap, I need an R33 GTS-T transmission and an RB30 sump and an RB25 oil pan, can you get these items too? and at what cost? R33 GTS-t RB25 Trans included in the $3500.00 RB25 oil pan $360.00 RB30 sump $125.00 3. How much is shipping? I am in Fargo, ND and can come and get it if need be.... aprox. $ 180-200.00 Had another thought on the whole bitch of a time finding parts for the RB.... What about CA18DE parts outta pulsar? I heard that these motors are jut 2/3 of a skyline motor? any thoughts? well, it looks like I am gonna go for a skyline swap, especially with these prices! can't be beat! i am sure you will be seeing a lot more of me in future months! later all! McAdam

Thanks very much, stony ! much appreciated. I will definately be looking into this as soon as I get a few other projects squared away, I need money, you know, lol. Anyone interested in a 1990 240SX w/CA18DET and Silvia JDM front end? or how bout a 1988 Mazda RX7 convertable with a perf exhaust and recently replaced motor? After I sell these, RB for the 240 !!!!! YeeeeeHaaaa! McAdam
-
Hey Stony, just out of curiosity, how much do you figure you have dumped into your car? when all is said and done, that is? and how much of that went to just swapping in the motor? I am considering an RB26DETT for my 240Z, was looking at L28ET, but the WOW factor and insane HP levels atracted me to the RB. Also, I am on freshalloy.com as well, aren't you ekisela over there? was wondering, all GT-r's came with LSD R200's front and rear, correct? so, could you take the LSD guts out of the front diff (oil pan) and put them into an R200 for a Z? may as well use ALL the part, huh? thanks in advance, McAdam Majors
-
DAMN! nice dude! thats a killer NA motor! do you know if your cam maker will be selling cams for the L series motors? I like the idea of running a higher redline with less valvespring pressure! hope you whoop some proche ass, fo course the 240Z did it when it came out, so no reason for you not to with 2X the HP and less weight!! Rock on! McAdam
