  1. Where is the inhibitor switch thing. I have replaced all other parts so it is all that is left except for a short in the wiring. PS Dont mean to sound ignorant, but I am, Hence the name I use. Jon
  2. Well, I installed a ocmplete new lock mechanism with new ignition switch and nothing. I still have the problem. I have noticed the tach needle jumpping when I am turning the key but it wont crank. I hear a sound as if the fuel pump is charged, but then click click. How hard is it to direct wire a start button to avoid the issue. For that matter, I have eliminnated the side marker lights while doing my body work, so would it be easier to rewire the stupid thing? I hate electrical isssues. I am considering an all aluminum dash with different guages and all, so would it be hard to rewire, well lets see; lights, ignition well starter, tach, oil, fuel, battery, etc. What do we think guys? Saw one guy with the aluminum dash with an all in one digital readout brain control center. Are these really hard to install and pay for >LoL< Or is there a replacement factory harness I can swap out for easy/ Any ideas. Thanks in advance.
  3. Thanks, I just ordered and picked up a new ignition switch. I think your right. I put in new battery connectors, and a new starter, so what else could it be? Thanks for all the help I will see what this does for me. J;-) n
  4. OK, Lots of INFO. I Have a bored out 2.8 with injection (75 280z) I was thinking about taking off the injection and putting on carbs. Is this a good thing or bad? I am just getting into this who Z thing, Hence the name. I would like input on the swap, to swap or not to swap. I am looking for fun car to drive, in process of body work paint and then new interior suspension and brake upgrades then out of money for a while. Thanks pS willing to get a used set carbs and intake for the swap though if good upgrade
  5. Yeah I would think same but have less than year old battery, new cable connectors installed all shiney and new...
  6. OKay, I have been pricing things too. I am looking at the LS1. I found a local shop, chop shop if you will (legal by the way) I can get a motor and the electronics for $1200 out the door. Is this a good price and (I only have basic mechanic knowledge never done major motor work) is the swap long and hard or since I have a bud with a shop, lift, puller, stand and all tools can it be done simple? LOL right.... I have a 3 to 4 out of five in mechanical experiance, so I am looking at taking alot on. LOL boy am I dumb. I just want a LS1 not looking to upgrade just want to swap and drive. OOps, I have the 75 280z L28
  7. Hello, have the stock 2.8 in my 75z. It has not been wanting to start. Turn the key to hear the fuel pump activate and lights come onand then "click." Battery checks out, alternator is new, all other electic working. Any ideas. Not a morning, wet, or dry weather issue just when I need to drive the car the most, ya know pickup kids or something important like court NO GO> To fix it I come back later minutes or hours and it just works I dont do anything to make it work. Whats that all about. Thanks J:icon_frow n
  8. anyone have shot of a split front bumper? I like the grill alot and think it maybe stolen (the concept) if I can get my bud to manufacture it for me. Less one of you want to give me a great deal on one.
  9. I like the ones you posted kilten one. Where do I get them??? Anyone???
  10. *big smiles, I am not alone down here in FL, thought all Z enthusiests in CA, AZ and elsewhere.* Hey local Orlandians. I am here too. I am the shade tree wanna be who is trying the Z restoration with some luck, no money and a lot of prayers. I am finishing the body work and looking to get a paint job myself. Here is my question. I have little money (wife and two kids are fine thank you) as a public servant and have to go the economical route. Should I feel too bad about only fixing issues and priming and painting. In real life I would like to media blast and start with fresh epoxy priming but wallet wont handle that. Any ideas, warnings, thoughts, or supporting advice. And yes I will take donations from those who pitty me. PS Where is my local support group meeting for my Z activities... Jon "just walking the thin blue line" PPS Ernesto, what a joke. All media, what else can we expect. Now when the real thing comes will we be ready. I hope so. Thanks again for the hype Local Media...
  11. Okay, Carbon fiber, it is interesting, but, (here's the dumb question) does it paint the same? And what about the small holes left from taking off the molding. Should I braze with a torch, JB weld and sand, or ______. Remember not a welder and do not have a welding machine or talent in that area. Thanks again guys,. Jon
  12. Dont want to exceed limits, but here goes, lets see.... The dent also creased the front of the hold to bend it up in a little bit a of an upside down V. That is the real problem. have to flaten out hood again, but how?
  13. Got rid of all of other dents except this one. I am a novice, so this on edge/croner is throwing me.... any entry level ideas would be appriciated. PS Molding holes on both sides of vehicle. Can I fill em with jbweld, sand it down and skim with bondo and then prime? I know, I know, ..... but I can't weld, I don't have a weld machine, etc... etc... Just a shade tree, wanna be mechanic/body man. A kids dream (mine), trying to be a reality, to own my own Z.
  14. Thanks guys, I learned there used to be a ham or cb radio in th Z, so I pulled out the extra wires. Now I am left with an after market ac that was installed and tied into the blower and fan controls. Got a buddy certified in auto ac, he'll check that part out and I take out what I wont use. I am surprised everything in this car works right down to the fuel light and fasten seatbelt light and buzzer. Thanks again, I am making progress.. Just dont tell the wife.
  15. Found a bunch of wires. Uh, maybe too many. I pulled some out and realized someone had a ham or cb radio in the z back in the day. Now trying to put in a radio and ran into some other issues. Nothing works with old radio plug. Ugh. Now this thing has some kind of after market AC. Dont know if it works. It has red and black wire from a switch marked up and down that is tied into the ac unit control. Anyone know where to get someone to fix such a thing, or should I just get rid of it (th ac unit). I will sell it lol. Also, anyone know what this group of wires is for. I know the one plug is for the radio, then there is the green wire and a couple more? Any ideas.
  16. I have a 75 280z with stock 4spd tranny. I want to change the fluid, but... 1-The fill plug has sensors on each side of it and it is square bolt, what wrench can I use and not ring it off or break a sensor 2-If I drain from the drain plug and then fill in side/fill plug are there any cautions (I was told the fill plug could hold a ?fork? and may need special considerations)is this a sales pitch from the AAMCO shop? 3-Tranny works good both up shifting and down shifting; however when stop and put it in reverse it grinds into gear, but works after it is ground into gear. If putting in reverse at a stand still no problem only when put in reverse after driving for a while and come to stop to back into driveway. Ideas? Oh, changing fluid cause dont know when it was last done and I just bought the car so I am trying to do a complete fluid change on the vehicle. Only have tranny, diff and break fluids left to change... Thanks Jon:confused:
  17. Blew a heater hose, so thought Id replace em all. NOw I find no one carries the two 90degree hoses that wrap around front of engine. Went to five parts stores all said they have it then when compaired to original none are the hose. The hose I need appears to be 6 inch total length 90 degree with one end 5/8 and the other 1/2 or 3/8. I cant even find it on Ebay or couple Z specialry stores online. Is there a part out there or must I convert this thing somehow. Owe it is stock engine and looks like original hoses from 75 on the 280z. Searched forums and didnt quite find this issue, just debates over stock or universal hose systems. I got the universal hose and woulnt work do to size difference. These are the two hoses that are on front of engine they come from heater box as 5/8 makes 90 turn and attaches to 3/8 alumin pipe and then crosses front of motor and 90s back with hose again 3/8 and back to 5/8 and into top driver side of motor. HELP?!?!?!?!?!
  18. Thanks guys, I will try cleaning then zapping. Less likely to damage first. Then new one.
  19. My newly acquired 280z is running rough, after getting to to run at all. It sat for God knows how long, but now it is running, I changed the oil and am trying to make it work better before I start my mods. I have to drive it daily while working on it. My 2.8 6cyl (1975 280Z) is missing, well the engine is misfiring that is. I take off #5 plug wire while engine running and sounds same as when wire in place. I was told the #5 injector is not working. I was told by a mechanic to pull the plug wire and straight wire 12volts from battery to the two terminals to clear the injector. 1-will this blow anything up 2-is this a bad thing to do 3-what other option do I have Help, what should I do?
  20. Oh, yeah, uh, I know exactly what all you guys just said. Hold on, strut ok just fonud it in Webster. Now, for the technical idiot just getting into this, what struts (short answer please) do I order for my Z (1975 280Z). I need all 4 replaced. I plan on wanting a nice street ride with good handling and all, not planning on racing, but I got the itch to hit it at least once or twice to get some times when I am all done. Help, be nice, and I'm up for someone taking me under their wing as I do this thing. Thanks Jon

  22. Wow alot of great info, I will start going through her and trying to figure it all out. Great site, tons of information. Again Thanks. Jon
  23. My experiance was break jobs, shocks, starters, alternators, plugs, wires, and minor body work before this, so I am a beginner. OK, I got a car (1975 280Z) and a hatch full of spare parts both body, electrical, and interior. Now what...I have to drive it so; The car sat for while and was not running. Cleaned the fuel lines drained the tank, put new gas in it and got the car to crank but the #6 injector sticks. The clutch was sticking so it was taken apart cleaned and freed up, now I actually can drive the beast, even though the engine is slugish (maybe from sitting so long). What engine is this if the VIN is a HLS30 prefix, is there way to tell? Needs tires and four struts, so that is second after I inspect the brakes and repack wheel bearings. Then I plan on driving it as I fix it up. Now the questions, #1 what am I forgetting. The motor has newer over sized pistons from a prior rebuild. The injection / fuel system looks clean and possible replaced not too long ago. I dont know the history of the car, so I am flying blind here and need some backup. 2. will the motors power increase or atleast run better as time goes on. (I am starting it and letting it idle a few minutes each day with ocasional drive around the block (literally) so it can breakin again after sitting for so long.) 3. what kind of struts should I put on basics now and improve later or is there a economical way to address this issue up front. 4. the body, floorpans, rails, and engine compartment are solid where else should i look All help recomendations accepted except for the suggestion of taking the car off my hand so I dont have to worry about it. PS This thing cost me $1400 was that too much for such a project, I dont know; a friend decided he didnt want a project and hooked me up with the deal.
  24. Cool, I am not the only one just starting out with this. I have 1976 280Z picking up this week. It is one of those that sat for a while and has all the parts stuffed in boxes in the passenger compartment. But!!! it starts and runs. That is the good news. Where do I go from here? Hope you dont mind me pigy backing your thread, but I think I am only one step ahead of you. I will be watching and maybe we can swop some photos.. PS I need a set of bolts for an alternator. I have new alternator to put in but I only have bracked mounted on engine no bolts. ANy ideas???
