  1. Well, since starting on my V8 Z I have stumbled upon several good deal and this one might be one of the better. I was telling a guy I worked with about my project and he said that he used to have a 76 that he really loved. He showed my some pictures and mentioned that he still had the wheels in his garage. He ended up letting me have them for $40! He had the window sticker and showed me where they were a $400 option in 76. They are only 14x7 Western four slot mags but that should give me room for plenty of meat under the car.

Did a lot of Z cars come with the Western wheels or was this just some sort of odd ball dealer option?

  2. Okay, I am still having problems selecting a cam for my build up. I am choosing between a xe268 and xe274 for my street build up.

    Vic JR intake

Iron Eagle 215, 2.05/1.60 small cc heads

    700R4 W/stock converter

    3.73 R200

    650 Holley vac secondary

I have also contacted Dart for their suggestion on block hugger headers.

I would really like to go with stock flat top pistons. That would probably leave me with the xe274. Do you think I would have a detonation problem with this setup? What do you think the street performance difference would be between the xe274 with flat tops and the xe268 with a 12cc dish?

Also, when looking on darts home page they list my spring setup 1.437 as being for solid lifters? Does this matter. I was under the impression that they are just the higher lift springs. Do I have to switch gears and start looking for a solid lift cam?

Thanks again for your help! hail.gif

  3. Grumpy, I pretty much have a clean slate to work with. The car is a 73 240 and the engine is a 1969 350. I have yet to select a rear end ratio but am leaning towards 3.7. I can not afford a T-56 so I guess I will be going with an automatic but have not yet decided between the 700R4 or the 200R4, I do want to use a stock stall speed. For a cam I think I will be running an Xtreme energy 268H but am not sure. So pretty much all I have at this point is the car an engine and the Dart heads.

I will be mainly driving the car on the street. I have thought about going with a larger cam to raise my power band to keep from obliterating my tires on take off (especially if I go with the 700R4). Any help would be great!

  4. Well, I am about to head out to the bank to buy a money order to pay for my new ebay heads. They are Dart Iron Eagle heads with the 64cc combustion chambers, 215cc intake runners and 2.05/160 valves! Now all I have to do is build my 350 around them. I will be mainly driving the car on the street. I am also not looking to spend a ton of money. I am going to use a comp cams Xtreme cam kit (not sure which one yet) and an automatic trans. Any suggestions would be welcome!

  5. Well Grumpy, Im taking your advice. Im now the proud owner of a 1969 Impala and a 1983 charger! The deal was that I got the Impala for free if I would move it and the charger out of his yard. I figure I will just call a scrap yard to come get the charger, grab the engine/trans out of the impala, strip everything I can unload on ebay and then send it to scrap as well. All and all I think I got a pretty good deal! 2thumbs.gif

  6. Hey Grumpy, sorry to keep bugging you but I have another question. As you know I am planning this conversion on a budget. As of today another option has opened up for me. A friend of mine has a 69 impalla and is willing to give me the 350 if I help him get rid of the car. The engine ran good a couple of years back with no smoke. Which do you think would be the better option?

    1. USE 1969 350

    short block = $100

    Freshen bottom end

Bearings, rings, timing chain, oil pump, pushrods and gaskets = $200

    Dart Iron Eagle heads/ w 80cc combustion chamber complete = $600 (summit)

    Comp cams Xtreme engergy kit

    = $160

    TOTAL = $1060

    2. 96-98 Vortec motor. = $1000 stock

I know the vortec would have a much better bottom end. I would be mainly using autozone parts in the 350 rebuild but I really think I may get a lot more out of the dart heads

    What do you think?

  7. There are just too many choices to make for this swap! I live close to the Z-Barn and will probably be getting my r200 from them. I need to decide between the 3.5, 3.7 and the 3.9.

I will be running a 96-98 Vortec roller motor with a carb and dual plane intake. I will be leaving the motor stock at first at least the first couple of months because of the salvage yard warrantee and because its very expensive to modify. I think right now Im leaning towards the 3.7??

Someone give me some insight, Im killing myself here! bonk.gif

  8. Well, you could go with a 96-98 vortec truck engine. I know a lot of people are using that engine without the electronics and making great HP. I will be using it in cerebrated form myself. Stock I think they delivered between 250 and 260 Hp at the tires. Assuming a 20% drive train loss that would be in the 312-325 Hp range. I know that with a cam, new springs that allow for extra lift and new roller rockers they are capable of Hp #s around 380.

Like I said, I have never seen a Z or another car with all the electronics but I bet it would work great. I have seen wiring information available for S10 and toyota FJ-40 swaps so you should have some help.

  9. Im not sure what "ported" heads your running or what you are planning on doing with the car but you need to be careful with 10:1 compression ratio. If you are running iron heads and want to use pump gas you really need to stick to >9.5:1 CR to avoid detonation. If you are running aluminum heads then you should be fine with 10:1. I dont know if your building your engine yourself or if you have an engine builder. If you are using an engine builder you probably should quiz him. He should know not to exceed 9.5:1 CR for pump gas.

    JMHO

  10. I was planning on buying a 97 vortec engine with about 50k miles, swaping the cam adding an intake and carb and bolting it in the car. Well, it looks like the selection of roller cams is very low. It seem almost everything required machining the heads to allow for more lift? The heads are good to up to .500 lift but I cant seem to find a kit for under that. I called comp cams and they suggested having the heads reworked or not even bothering! This is really starting to cheese me off! Does anyone have any suggestions?

    Thanks for you time

  11. Thanks grumpy, I just keep going around and around on this one. What do you think of the 200R4 with a lock up? I am been reading a lot about it. Its not as fat and uses less ponies to turn! I figure that Ill be making over 350HP so Im not sure. Also, I really had my heart set on a manual but it just seems like so much of a hassle!! :( I would love to go with the T-5 or T-56. I was really hoping that the T-56 installation would be easier for the vortec engine. Oh well :(:(:(

  12. Im sorry to ask so many questions but this is all really new to me. I need to know what transmissions I can run with a 96-98 vortec motor? I am looking for a way to get off cheaper and still have a good amount of reliability and power. Stock the engine has 250HP at the rear so I figure about 310 at the flywheel? I am looking to add a cam and run a carb intake. Calling around tells me that I can find one with about 50K miles for around $1000, is this good?

    1. Will the T5 trans work with the newer motors

    2. If I decide on the T-56 will I still have to buy an adaptor kit or will it just bolt up?

    3. Also, just in case I get fed up and decide to just go with an automatic will the 700r4 work with the vortec?

Sorry for all of the questions. There is no way I could do this without you guys to bug! hail.gifhail.gif
