  1. Buy the JTR (Jags that run) book. That should be the first purchase of anyone thinking of doing a swap. There is a link on the hybrid Z home page or you can get it from Jegs.com or summitracing.com. JTR also sells the basic kit but you really need the book first.

    Hope this helps

  2. I am just as much of a newbe as you are but if Im not mistaken a hybrid Z has more weight on the rear tires than than the front. I think the weight distribution is something like 49/51?? Actually Im not sure that a hybrid Z would not be considered a mid engine car because the engine is located behind the front sespension.

  3. Okay guys, I dont think you understand. No one said that I was going to put some huge cam in my car and use the Rhoads lifters as a "crutch". If you are putting any cam in your car to help at all with your top end you are normally loosing a little something down low. Some of you guys act like I trying to get away with something here. I just read about them and thought the looked pretty trick. Since I have searched some other sites and not many people like them.

  4. Dont worry about getting me mixed up. You are a man in demand! So to clarify, you would go with the 327? What do you think the HP difference would be between the two. I am pretty sure that rebuild would cost about the same for both. 1969 327 I think is a large crank??

Also, If I were to go with a bigger cam in the 327 lets say the xe284 or even the xe294 would I still be able to go with my stock stall in a 700R4?? Once again, I am sorry for asking so many questions, I am really new to this whole thing.

  5. actually, I have followed your advice all along. I started out wanting a vortec engine and you suggested that I spend my money on heads and go with a 350 that a friend was giving me. I have never even asked about a 383??

    web page

Well, turns out that 350 is a 327 (he couldnt tell the difference). I have two options. I can sell the 327 and build a 350 or build the 327.

Thinking I was getting a 350 I bought the heads and intake you suggested (good deals on ebay). The heads are the Iron eagle 215s and the intake is a victor jr.

I understand the importance of matching all of your engine components. I was just thrown for a loop with the 327. I understand that the 350 would make more hp but I have heard a lot of good things about the 327s revving characteristics.

Once again, thanks for your help. I know I have asked a lot of questions.

  6. I dont really know what to think. A friend of mine is giving me a 1969 Impala with a 350 :D . When I go to look at it there are the nice little 327 badges staring back at me  . Dont get me wrong, I really like the 327 and I think they are one of the best choices for the Z but Im just not sure if will fit with some parts I have already bought.

Dart Iron Eagle heads 215cc intake runners and 2.05/1.60 valves

    Victor Jr intake.

Im sure the intake will be what I want but are the heads too much?? If not what kind of Hp could I expect to make with the xe274 or the xe278 cams with around a 600 vac secondary?

Im sorry to ask so many questions. It is just great to have someone who knows so much and is willing to help out. hail.gifhail.gifhail.gif

  7. I had originally planned to go with a vortec engine in my car. I have never seen anyone use the fuel injection on a car swap. There is a good site where its used on an old Land Cruiser.

    Vortec Cruiser

Most people seem to take the fuel injection off and go with a carb. You have to buy a special intake from GM or Edelbrock to fit the Vortec heads. Here is what made me change my mind.

    1. Stock Vortec heads flow great for stock but you need a set of $200 crane springs or machine work to be able to have more than 0.500 lift

    2. The roller cam is great but there is not much available for it that is below 0.500 lift (see No. 1)

    3. The cams are very expensive

    4. Most aftermarket or GM performance cams require you change to roller rocker arms as well.

    5. You can get a couple of really good intakes for the Vortec from edelbrock but they cost quite a bit more than the reagular intakes.

This could be a great motor but I decided to go a different direction. Here is what helped me make up my mind

    Vortec engine $1,100

    Comp Xtreme Cam $ 240

    Crane spings $ 183

    Victor Jr intake $ 236

    TOTAL $1,759

    1969 350 $ 100

    Dart 215cc 2.05/1.06 heads $ 850 (ebay new)

    Comp Xtreme Cam + Lifters $ 160

Victor Jr intake $ 130 (ebay)

    Rebuild kit $ 180

    TOTAL $1,420

With all this said. The Vortec is a great engine choice. I just wanted something a little different.

  8. Man you need to read some of the performance threads on the board. With any kind of stout sbc you will be as fast as the new and old vets! 2thumbs.gif It sounds like you are just doing a very basic switch but I think you will be happy with what you get. I have never driven a V8 Z but I have driven a ford 302 powered RX7. it was an almost stock 302 (intake, headers and a Holley 600). He could embarrass my other friends new 5.0! I mean run off and leave him! :D

My big piece of advice to you is to make your plans and STICK to them. I started off trying to just build a low buck toy. Now I am gathering the parts for my 400+ HP small block, realizing that I will have to put in sub frame connector$ and a roll cage! Most on here get bitten by the go fast bug! It seems my project grows by a $1000 a day!

  9. I am not really trying to cut corners here but do I really need a roll cage in my 73? I was planning on putting some sort of sub frame connectors but was not thinking about a roll cage. I will be running close to 400HP through a 700r4. I do not want to twist the body up too bad. Would the sub frame be enough?

I understand that I will get a lot of replies asking if the cost of a roll cage is worth my life or safety. The cars didnt come factory with a roll cage and I really dont see that many people with stock Zs putting in a roll cage. I would plan to put one in down the road but was hoping the connectors would be enough for now.

If I do need a cage, do you think a cage would be enough without the connectors?

    Please forgive my ignorance!

  10. Okay guys I am not sure which carb I should get. It looks like I can pick up either a Holly 650 DP or a Holley 750 Vac secondary for a really good price. Here is my information.

    1973 240z

    350 sbc

    Victor Jr intake

Dart Iron Eagle heads 215cc 2.05/1.60

Comp cams xe274 or xe268 (have not made up my mind yet??)

    700R4 with stock stall

I have experience with the 750 vac secondary but never with a double pumper. I would really like to have something responsive for the street. If anyone has any advice it would be greatly appreciated!

  11. Well, if there is one thing you can count of Fulmer doing its shaping up the lines! I think they will be fine upfront! If you are interested in really great Tennessee information you need to try www.tennessee.rivals.com. Its really slow right now but next week things will be jumping again! 2thumbs.gif

As for the Victor Jr. grumpy had suggested using the Super Victor if it would fit and if not to go with the victor. I think the idea is that the car is so light you really dont need a dual plane intake! Also something you may be interested in I have a Hot Rod Magizine Nov 99 that outlines a build up with Vortec heads. They started with a junk yard 350 with a new timing chain oil pump, tune up and carb kit.

    Stage one

    90 350 TPI heads

Summit cam kit 214/224 dur 442/465 lift

    Weiand dual plane intake

    this produced

    299 hp @ 5000 RPM and

    368 lbft @ 3500 RPM

    Stage two

Xetreme energy cam kit 224/230 dur 470/480 lift

    319 hp @ 5300 RPM and

    380 lbft @ 3900 RPM

    Stage three

    Vortec heads

    Performer intake

    375 hp @ 5700 RPM

    395 lbft @ 4300 RPM

    Stage four

    Super Victor intake

    Demon Carb

    395 hp @ 5700 RPM

    400 lbft @ 4800 RPM

The Super Victor had a really flat torque curve. It actually had more torque than the performer from 3600 RPM on up. I kown the Demon had a lot to do with it but I still dont think the tall single plane hurt it. With the bigger cams we are thinking of using I think it would sing!!

  12. Okay, Looks like with about 400hp Im going to be needing a good set of subframe connectors. I have looked at Peter Paraska's site and I guess that that is the way most of you have gone? He says to double check all of his numbers before starting. Well, I am looking into having some made up and was wondering if his numbers are correct as posted? Also, he said that one rear demension was not listed? Does anyone have access to this demension?

    Thanks for your time!

  13. I need to know what intakes will fit under a stock hood in a JTR 240Z. I will be using a drop down air filter and a 650 Holley vac secondary carb. I am pretty sure the standard Victor Jr will fit just fine but what about the one with the built in 1" spacer? Also, what about the Super Victor. I really dont have the $$$ to invest in a cowl induction hood. Please help if you are running any of these intakes.
