  1. Amen. I hate where im at right now...feels like i may never drive my Z again.
  2. Im sure this isn't exactly a "secret" engine, but after doing some searching, it doesnt seem to have been talked about on hybridz, so here ya go: Its the Chevy L31-R Longblock (GM# 12530283), available at summit for $2,159.95 (as of 8/11/2009). it is a GEN 1+ motor used in '96-00 trucks and vans and prolly a few other things. It features: - 350ci Displacement - Vortec steel 64cc heads - 9.4:1 compression - 4 bolt main - Roller cam/lifters - 255hp 330tq Summit: http://www.summitracing.com/parts/NAL-12530283/ I know the HP isnt the greatest, but it comes with a pretty small cam: .414 in. of intake lift and 0.428 in. for the exhausts. Duration at 0.050 in. of lift is 191 degrees for the intakes and 196 for the exhausts, with 111 degrees of lobe separation. I think with a better cam, decent carb, and basic tunning this baby could be 350hp. Not bad for that price IMO. However I have read that the valve springs have to be changed even for a small cam upgrade. This is what im going with, I'll let you all know how it goes. ...and "L31-R" sounds cool haha. -MIKE
  3. im at about $3k and i dont even have an engine in the car yet. if cost is a big factor in the build, its best to avoid the 'while im at it' spiral of death. Also prolly best to purchase a running or even crate motor, a full rebuild can get costly. personally im going to sell off my performance engine parts ive been collecting and go with a crate motor. i wish i would have gone crate from the beginning. i also wish i wouldnt have stripped my rust free 240z down to the frame 'while i was at it' lol. good luck
  4. haha! those are the Trickflow heads I WANT. I really wanna hold out for them (and I probably will) but money is TIGHT right now. this economy is killing me. the way things are going now Im gonna end up with junkyard heads. Thank you everyone else for your comments too
  5. Thank you everyone for the responses, and for not flaming me for such a simple question. My dad's friend is selling his 76 2+2 for $200, but he's going out of town this evening is why I needed to know so quickly. I might buy the car anyway when he gets back, its got a non-webbed intake manifold (w/EGR,but oh well), P79 head, and what Im pretty sure is a 5-speed (and i think a 3.54? R200) Its not in too bad of shape, but it has been sitting a LONG time.
  6. Thats what it looks like to me too, I just haven't compared the two side by side. thanx for the response
  7. Prolly a stupid question, but I couldn't find an answer. I read the sticky and did some searaching, but still no dice. (parcially because you can't search "2+2"...the engine automatically removes it.) Im sure the answer is here and I am going to keep looking, but i need to know right away (in the next few hours) and Im affraid i wont find the answer in time, so please help. can I put 1976 2+2 doors and front fenders on my 1972 240z? thanx -MIKE
  8. Hello everyone! I just wanted to share some info that have not been able to find anywhere. I've been building a 355 SBC for about 6 months now and Im to the point of "all I need is heads". like most people, I am on a budget, so ive been deeply considering the cheap summit irons. (part number: SUM-152123) But i was unable to find any flow numbers on these (so I can use CompCams cam selection software) so I contacted Summit, and they FINALLY responded with: Then I went here: http://www.purplesagetradingpost.com/sumner/techinfo/heads1.html and the closest match is the GM 462 heads, so im guessing that's the casting the summit heads are based on. but who knows, valves are diffrent sizes and chamber volume is different. They are also about the crappiest heads listed on the entire site. ...just wanted to share my findings incase anyone else wants to consider these. I might get them anyway vs. the Trickflow heads that I WANT. its gonna depend on if work picks up around here. -MIKE
  9. I know Im kind of diggin' this thread up from the grave, but I just wanted to add some info I learned about using a tow dolley: My aunt is an insurance agent and she told me that any time you are moving a vehicle, and atleast one wheel is touching a public road, you are required (at least in California) to have liability insurance on the vehicle. That includes using a tow dolley. So be carefull or you could end up with fat ass ticket! I think the fine for no insurance is like $300-$750 depending on if you go to court, and what kinda mood the judge is in lol.
  10. Thanx for the write-up! ...came in very handy today. I used a single 180ohm resister...hopefully its close enough. I will find out tomorrow when I get gas
  11. ...after thinking about this a little more (im drunk, so im a lil slow lol) I find myself questioning one of my asumptions. My experience with s30s lay only in carburated models, so im not sure if the ECU in FI models have any speed data. Im thinking that it does NOT. if this is the case, then you prolly have a mechanicaly driven gov of some type. That means you should be able to find it before or after the speedo cable. One more thing i kinda goofed up in my first post and forgot to ask: What is the RPM reading at when you hit 85 MPH, and can you pass that RPM at lower speeds? ....hope im not talking out of my drunk ass lol -MIKE
  12. ok, if you are pulling good to 85, then slowing down for a few MPH, then pulling back to 85, then you deffinatly have a gov of some sort, or maybe an ECU prob. if it IS a gov, it ISNT stock. a few questions: 1. have you drivin the car faster than 85 before? 2. have you done any mods recently? 3. does the car have or seem to have any upgrades? mainly in the ignition department? My best guess with the info you have given, is a previous owner bought the car for their son/daughter and had a gov installed so they wouldn't "kill them selves." If that is the case, then i cant help you much; speed governers are outlawed at my house, so i know very little about them! i suppose it is possible to have a gov driven off the the speedo cable, but i would suspect that it is electronic. But really, i just dont know enough about them. -MIKE
  13. I hope this isnt a repost, but here we go: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Nissan-200SX-240SX-280ZX-Turbo-Simulator-94-98-00-02-04_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ33742QQihZ013QQitemZ230248260002QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWDVW on top of not providing any power gain, it restricts exhaust flow LOL.
  14. Thank you for the replies! looks like im gonna run with it! ....now to get all the parts together:flamedevi -MIKE
  15. one of the only things i dont like about the L series is that the inake/exhaust manifolds are on the same side of the head. i have an l28 that i plan on turbo charging soon, and im looking into all the options to do so. I know i can get a turbo manifold at the junkyard for almost nothing, but i dont like its location...I did a search, but didnt find anything on this: what would be the disadvantages of routing the exhaust to the other side of the engine bay and putting the turbo there? that would make it VERY easy to route the air into a front mount intercooler and out the other side into the TB. As long as the exhaust line going to the turbo was insulated well, i dont see how it would make too much difference where the turbo goes, with the exeption of maybe a LITTLE lag....but iono.... opinions?
