The car runs now I did the ignition timing to the factory 10 degrees and the motor idles incredibly rough at 500 i cant get it to go any higher, but once it hits 1,000rpm there is no stopping it, the sad part is..... i have to take it apart again seeing as how there is now water in my oil and i have a feeling its the timing cover... FML
  2. can you send me a link for adjusting lash? I've read how to modify your datsun ohc a few times and it still doesnt seem clear.... maybe ignition but shouldnt be too out of faze..... no vac leaks

I recently obtained a camshaft that is supposedly, "streetable," but am not sure if it has to high of spec's for my stock 1983 280zx, it has a stock ecu, and a p79 head, i cant recall off the top of my what block but here are the spec's on the cam. Intake Exhaust Valve Lash .008 .010 Valve Lift .450 .450 Duration 260 & 260 degrees Duration @ .050 238 & 238 degrees Lobe Center 108 & 111 degrees Intake Opens 11 Degrees B4 TDC Exhaust Opens 50 Degrees B4 TDC Intake Closes 47 Degrees after BDC Exhaust Cloases 8 Degrees after BDC The car has trouble staying, even when i give it gas on but i have a feeling it could be the timing on the ignition or improperly adjusting my rocker arms. i adjusted my rocker arms to .010inch and .012 inch, like the dealers manual says but it says you do it HOT, and obviously the car has to be cold to put the cam in. the timing between the cam and crank is dead on as I took off the cover to do the timing right....

  8. it comes from having no cat and i don't think its back fire that you all are talking about unless its coming directly from the intake which i have to admit sounds hard to diverge considering its right next to the dam exhaust haha but my engine makes very discreet pops at the muffler and i have my cat so i imaging having no cat will allow the after burn to sound a lot louder try on a cat or a non glass pack muffler i mean its only a couple of bolts and if your certain its a back fire i recommend cleaning out your intake manifold and checking youd mast vac lines along with the hose on the bottom of the intake mani the rubber one... what ever that one is called haha
  9. i swaped out some injectors and now the 280zx doesn't run any more. info: when i got the car my dad was nice enough to order me lightly used turbo injectors. Supposedly they have 3000 miles on them and came out of a running turbo 280zx. the weird thing about these injectores is they did not have a name nor did the all completely match i looked at them and two of them had a blue painted on band while the others were only sold black. another interesting thing is that the stock injectors had a plastic nipple at the end where the fuel is sprayed while the other was metal and roughly the same size. when i installed the new injectors i took off the bolts holding the rail down and took off the bolts holding the boots down from there i simply took unhooked the fuel side and took all six of them out ,me being not so smart did not write down the wire order, when i put in the new injectors they seemed to fit in alot easier considering the nipple that goes into the intake was alot shorter in length i put everything back togather by attaching the fuel rail ends then attching the fuel rail then attaching the boot end, i did reuse the boots and bolts. i attempted to start the zx many times but failed. and am wondering why. it might be that i mixed up the injector wiring so i looked up the seqaunce and tomorow i am going to make sure that the order is correct but i want to be sure that my instalation was correct and if everyone thinks the nipple being shorter might be the problem or maybe because the injectors are from a turbo and i put them into a non turbo and now theres too much flow?? help please
  10. one of the things that almost lead to the demise of Nissan was making the z to expensive in the mid 90's. It was designed to be an affordable sports car for those who could not afford something like a vette. or a euro coupe. and though i would love to see a tt 380z, if Nissan were to use the skyline engine, it would push the price of the Z to probably around 50k (just a guess for a hand built tt engine). I think the most reasonable way to build this z (if it were to ever happen) is to make it in a factory styled manor, for consistent engines, and machine assembled. honestly i think , actually hope, the next z is similar to this but slimmer, and have a longer hood like the old z's and have the hood open reverse, raise it up so it doesn't scrape a curb and make the rear hatch steeper like a crossfires back end but more refined, and then add options to it but allow it to be modifiable none of this touch a part or swap a wheel and the gtr wont even start crap that nissan is leaning to the point of a sports car like the z is that it is well built from the factory but theres potential from there on. im seriously worried that the next z will be a load of techno crap that the extremest that designed the skyline with the slogan " the gtr we make is the only gtr that is road worthy" sorry about the ranting i think the 432 paint scheme is one of those " it looked better on the old car" things try a dark grey with a silver or white hood
  11. ok so i referred to my manuals and adjusting the pattern on the lash should be pretty easy (in theory) so how exactly does a rocker need to be placed back on? i read a forum and it said to use a screwdriver and that made me shiver at the thought of accidentally scratching the new cam also on resale how much do you think a used zx cam would go for if i decide i never want to go back to stock quick thought the stock 16 on a zx should propell the car to 0-60 in over 8 seconds i think but when i went for a spin last night i got a "spoken count" of 7.5 im going to investigate this further and see i counted acurately anybody have a good idea of how long it should take me to get from 60- 85?
  12. hmmm sounds like something ill need to see in order to do.... im going to consult my schools shop teacher about this and see if i can watch him do this, i have a feeling im going to ♥♥♥♥ this up badly haha , what do you think the price would be to have it done by someone that knows what there doing?
  13. i have how to modify you sohc, the factory zx book, and a haynes book but as an explanation a valve adjustment is adjusting the mount a valve is moved into the cylinder or what this is starting to sound like a pain in the ass how much do you think it would be to get an ase or mod shop to do this, more then 100?

  15. so let me get this straight in some steps 1 drain anti freeze 2 remove valve cover 3 remove valve cover gasket 4 mark cam towers 5 put the sprocket thing in the 12 o'clock position **which should be done first between 6 and 7!!! 6 take off cam towers 7 remove rockers 8 take off cam 9 put new cam on towers 10 replace cam towers in the proper (origanal) spots 11 rotate the cam to make sure it is properly seated 12 place rockers back on 13 align cam to 12 o'clock position 14 replace chain being care full not to rotate it 15 make sure everything is tightened 16 clean off all old gasket off or surfaces 17 align new gasket and bolt valve cover back into place 18 flush radiator (considering its empty) 19 replace fill rad with antifreeze and water mixture then she should be good to start up right? also just for good measure should i mark 12 o'clock position of the cam to the crank at the bottom where all the belts meet? for insurance?
  16. im sorry im just learning about engines the cam towers are the metal bands over the cam i am not mistaken right? the ones that loop over the bearing? and by coolant you mean antifreeze correct? if so i need to flush the rad anyways so itll be a good time. thanks both of yall
  17. i have a hotter cam for my 280zx im interested in swaping out only the cam no rockers springs, ect.. i do not want to take out my motor to adjust the timing.on a chevy motor its possible to just pull out the cam and not have to ajust the timing if you just keep everything at the possition it came out and have the lobe exactly at 12 when you take it out and put it back in. i dont have experience with the l28 so i want to know its the same situation or should i just take it to a tune shop and have them do it?
  18. call around to juskyards or search craigslist and make a deal with a person selling a zx to exchange the single part (offer money? or a discount at O-Reilly's?)

  20. honestly it looks like some one had gotten the 350's paint and did a Cadillac diamond /pearl coat (goes over a base coat) over it i did this with a white on my half-trac (with white instead of a yellow) and it made it beautiful.
  21. i found several parts suspension wise for a decent price all and all i found an entire suspension set up for under a grand including shocks springs cambers i bought this zx for 500 from a guy that owned a Datsun(at the time) dealership and he had his guys working it all day sadly though his wife had decided to drive it to work one day and got into a wreck me and my dad enjoy bodywork and we got a new hood and bumper with mount for 100 and assembled it there is no slack in the steering but has fair amount of roll which as far as i learned can be corrected by more responsive struts and stiffening the chasis i guess i should have went out asking which is the best for the price as in is the illumina worth the extra money if its not going to be an everyday vehicle is the hp responsive or is there another brand should i be looking at suspention wise as for hp i want a little more who makes the best exhaust do i get more power from adding bigger injectors with the zx? or should i rebuild the head and add tighter rings on the pistons do you get a better curve putting it forged pistons or a aggressive cam is redoing the ecu worth it on the l28 basically i wanted the best bang for the buck engine wise im sorry i didn't make that clear and who make the best suspension parts
  22. its your ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ converter if your loosing pressure and your having problems revving high i guarantee it your exhaust is probably old and your cat converter is all clogged up if anything buy a new converter and if it doesn't do anything return it to auto zone or run a straight pipe with no converter
  23. im interested in making my zx non turbo coupe into a cheap drifter car last time i checked the 280 2nd gen has around 130ish hp i want this car to also be a decent highway car(60-100mph races) im thinking id be more then happy with 170-190hpand i don't care for turbos currently i have a 10lb nos dry system a friend gave me from his old wrecked car im planning on putting on Tokico hp shocks all around and they cost 350+ship (good idea?) im also planning on putting a bigger sway bar in and eventually both front and rear strut bar as for hp im the tradtion cone filter but im going to have 2 on and there going to be 4" long so im hoping for 10hp(is that accurate?) and im getting a 2.5"exhaust tplus header then im going to get the Canadian mph swap(maybe 20hp?) is that really going to get me 30hp or am i just lying to myself haha and then im going to get a 2nd ecu and have it tuned for power im hoping that that will be enough to reach my 170-190hp goal before spray is all of this logical?
  24. change your oil, get new spark plugs (space them as recommended ) then flush your rad out after that put octane booster in your car and see how your cat is doing in the converter is clogged up then thats why your getting smoke your creating enough pressure to push the gas out honestly i think its your catconv that went out or you need to ajust your timing to a new setting to comply with the new tb
