Had to change this topics name (was the Jersey/BOV topic)
Jersey replied to a topic in Turbo / Supercharger
I faced the outlet almost directly toward that fender wall, a little angled toward the back. Hard to explain and cannot find one darn pic that shows it clear enough of my pre-intercooler setup!! I also used a 1G DSM boot between the AFM and T3. It was shorter (so i could squeeze a pipe out into the front of the radiator for an intake filter so it gets good cool air) and, it had the outlet and hose already attached to be connected to the BOV outlet. No need to figure ho wto modify original. I don't know how others use the stock boot with the AFM AND route through the rad support for a front mounted air filter, that's just what i came up with. I'm sure others have much better ideas. I do think i have a pic of someone elses Z exactly where i placed my BOV on the stock pipe. I'll see if i can find it. Anyway, here's a pic comparing the two boots.... -

Hey. Sorry - work kicking my @ss. I mounted the 1G DSM BOV right at about the middle of the hard bend, right before the throttle body, on the bottom with it facing upside down. I am seaching for a picture now and will post it. I think you might have a little bit of a problem with it mounted on top. There isn't a heck of a lot of room between the hood & motor once it's closed. It really depends exactly how and where it's placed. You got some good remidies on the other post. I'll post a pic if i have one. -
umm....ok Lock. Fly up from AL to NJ and you can have my Z ummmm..ok, maybe not Actually, i haven't 100% confirmed it is a 3.54 because i have yet to pull it but i did the DS counting method and compared it to the KNOWN 3.54 on the garage floor and it does read 3.54 AND...now that the tire height is so short, it all makes sense. Just haven't had the time between work and my damn boat acting up. It's always SOMETHING!!!! Actually, my traction off the line is great, i just dont think i've got enough get up and go without spool. My previous 10:1 N/A L28 loved to pull out of the hole like that with bottom end tourqe, dumpng the clutch, but i'd either spin or bog big with the L28ET. A taller tire is going to help. It would essentially be putting me back in the rartio i need for the T motor. Thanks.

I dont really have a set RPM to launch. I rev it up and down while we're both staged, trying to spool the tubro, and try to be on an upward rev when the tree drops. I know, probably not the right way or will never be super consistant but, it works for me right now. It's only test/tune so it only starts the clock when i trip the beam. No posi. I just found out that i DO have a 3.54 rear (thought it was a 3.9 because of rpm-vs-mph) and then double-checked my tire height (215-50-15), which was suppose to be 23 1/2" but, as it turns out, they're only about 22" fully inflated. So when i run at the track at around 20psi, they're even shorter than that! That's why i'm going through the gears so fast and stretching 4th through the trap way behond (~6100rpm) the rpm level i should be at. Now trying to figure out which size tire/drag radial/slick i should get for the track, if i ever get back. I think it should help her spool off the line a little more. No secrets, just driving her as hard as i can, as you guys are. I can't wait to see your time once you hook. Very nice.
-
Nice #'s Scott! Like you said, once you get that thing hooked, you'll be crushing into the 12's. Congrats. Any Video? Sleeper - Great #'s as well. 110mph! Sweeeeet. Wish i was where you guys are at with your Z's, performance-wise. Awesome.
-
I feel the same way as you about doing something like that. If my Z blew up, i would blame that part forever! lol. Just a thought. Didn't you say someone else was doing the T-swap for you? Maybe the person that's doing the swap would drill it out? Anyway, good luck.
-
525 - hope you didn't take my post in the wrong way. I just re-read it and it sounded like it could have come off in the wrong way. What i meant when i said "what do you mean you can't..." i meant, that was it that you couldn't get to it (installed in a tight place) or was there another problem? Anyhow, i wish i had more knowledge about the restrictors for ya. Maybe you could buy a drill, use it for the one tiny hole and return it? Just a thought. Good luck.

Going to dragstrip on friday, any 1/4 mile predictions?
Jersey replied to a topic in Turbo / Supercharger
Thinking about that 6-puck now...it may be tough to slide that thing and get a good 60' but, i think if he gets at least a 2.0 or better, he should be able to pull mid 12's, no? I pulled the 12.8 with a 1.9 60' and his setup is above and behond what i have - T4b, 370cc injectors, 3" MB exhaust, AFPR. If he's able to crank that thing up near 14-15psi without detonation, AND is able to get it out of the hole without too much spin, I'm thinking he should fly. Guess we'll see. Hoping he crushes the 12's! -
What do you mean when you say you don't have access to drill a .020" hole in it? I have no idea where you'd get the restrictors but think it would be easier to go find/buy/borrow a small .020" bit and just drill it, no?

You should get 12's Scott. You've got a much better set up than i do and i pulled a 12.88. I'm thinking 12.5! Hopefully the R180 install went smooth for you last night and you make it tonight! Keep us posted and good luck. Get video if you can!!! -
Thanks zcarnut. I was just trying to elinimate down-time but it looks like the only true way to do it is like you mentioned, pull the old and get some #'s. Appreciate it.

Doug - I think you're right...the stock T3 isn't going to take much abuse at 15psi for long but, i'll run her 'till she craps out, hopefully later than sooner. I do have the NPR I.C. and DP which i also agree, i think will let it live a little longer. With my I.C., i've only got a 1psi drop. 3psi seems to be high, no? I would love to eliminate the AFM. One day i'll go aftermarket ECU. Maybe i'll do the MS. Affordable on my budget. What are your trap speeds at Lock? 525 - not 100% sure how the BTM works - if it's used with the 6A or stand alone - but it retards timing. With a T motor, it's important to retard under boost. I think Lock or Sleeper...no, actually i believe it's Yo2001 that's using the MSD BTM. He could explain exactly how his is working and if he noticed a difference. Thanks for the info guys.

525 - you'll get the 13's no sweat Drive 'er like you stole 'er
-
Len - i'm just driving it hard just like you guys are. 525 - Yours should run just like my Z the last time i took it to the track before I.C. & new pump. I was running - 10psi (modded WGA) 1G BOV BW-T5 2 1/2" mandrel exh stock L28et stock FPR stock injectors stock pump oh yeah...miata seats! lol. 13.333
-
Len - Thanks bud. i think my drivetrain does hate me. The way i look at it...beat it...if it breaks it was probably weak and in need of replacement anyway! ha. I am nice to her before and after the track yo/sleep/lock - you guys just sparked a memory of when i ran my Z, same tires, N/A L28, '78 5sp and 3.54's...I could almost stretch 3rd out across the line and had trap speeds of around 90mph. With this T motor, the BW-T5 which is close to the 280b 5sp and whatever rear i have in there, i am REALLY stretching 4th out across the line with a trap speed of only 106mph. Big difference. Now i'm up in the lower 6k rpm range through the traps which really starts to get flat after 5800 like you say Lock. I did try shifting into 5th a couple of runs and blew it both times I think i'll have a good shot at dropping everything this long weekend and checking it all out. Need to do a few more things while i'm at it - 3" exhaust, somehow strap/plate the nose of the R200 down, raise the DS loop a little, grainger valve, and try to figure out if the stock FPR is not holding enough fuel back at 14psi or i'm just maxing out the 280cc injectors. Temp still raises pretty good at the end of a run and i just started to ping at 14psi. Walbro pump is supplying, just not sure what is starting to fail to cause light ping. If all goes well, i'm going to try and get her back on the track Wednesday night. Thanks guys for the replies. And let me know what the wager is...i'm saying it's a 3.90. Hoping anyway.
-
You guys have me cracking up over here. You both are just making me MORE anxious to pull this thing! haha. Sleeper, i liked the 3.54's with the same tires and my N/A L28. The two differences now will be that i was running a '78 5sp with that combo and obviously no turbo. Funny...if you watch the video and watch the time counter, i run through the first three gears in like 6 seconds, hit 4th and run that for the remaining 7 seconds! And i'm hitting 4th around mid-track. Reeeeeally stretching 4th across the line. Lock, since you have the BW, 3.90's and a GPS, try doing a test in 4th at like 3k or 4k rpm and tell me what the MPH the GPS is reading if you get a chance. Guys, thanks.
-
Nothing at all to lose 525 but i am going to swap them out before the next time i go with the 3.54's if i have the 3.90's. I've got to get some time to pull the R200 out. Another thing is that i haven't driven my Z for a total of one week straight since the T swap because i keep pulling it off the road for a few days to do upgrades/part swaps! and i miss driving her! haha. Thanks Lock. My tires are about 23 1/2" tall. I just got back from doing another test during lunch - 70mph on GPS @ 4k rpm in 4th gear. If i had the 3.54, i think i should be somewhere around 80mph @ 4k or 3500rpm @ 70mph. I really have no idea about the track since i really dont have much track experience. I like going fast though
-
Got the seals, actually had them for about 6 months now but haven't put them in. Figured i'd do it all at once with the bearings. Thanks Sleeper for the info & reply.
-
Hey all. I was wondering if anyone knew the part #'s, CR or whoever, for all the seals and bearings for the R200? Have to do some R&R on my '78 R200 and want to replace all the inner-outer-front seals & bearings while i'm in there. Also, are there any differences between the R200's as far as bearings/seals go or are they all the same from '75-'83? I could call the parts store and they MAY be able to look it up but, it'll most likely turn out the way it usually does....they order it, i get it , i return it cause they ordered the wrong parts then they look it up again, new #'s, re-order, get it, return it...blahblah. If it's not in the computer now-a-days, they don't have the knowledge here in NJ to open a darn book anymore! Unreal. Thanks in advance guys.

Thanks guys for all the advice. I think i'm going to go with the 3.54. Now i'm just hoping the cv halfshafts pop into the '78 3.54 R200 i have and that the front flange will bolt up to the Turbo DS. If not, it'll be a little more work. O'well. Drax, i will share what i do after i get back to the track in a couple of weeks. I have a feeling i'll be able to launch much better with the 3.54. The 3.90 i believe that's in there now was real hard to control it from spinning the wheels. Doug, thanks for the advice. My budget (wife) doesn't have any near future plans on spending for the ET's or wrinkles, but if i come across a pair cheap enough...i'm sure i can convince her it's better than wasting my street tires Moby, thanks for checking it out. I'm still curious why the R200 i'm running that's out of the ZXT has an aluminum cover, not finned. Just didn't know they came like this or, the ol' man that owned it before me swapped it out? 525, Nothing to lose and if i had the chance to go to the track more often, i would give it a try. The next time that i do go, i will be running 3.54's. I used to really like that gear when i ran it with my N/A motor. I pulled a 1.7 60ft with the 3.54, '78 5sp & 10:1 L28 w/SU's....even though my fastest ET was a 15.026 You said in your previous post to rev it and dump it at 4k, that's why i said my Z would bog...because of the turbo. I did that with my N/A motor and it was the best way..actually a little slip of the clutch helped. With the T motor, the boost doesn't build unless you have a load on it. That's why i'm revving it up and down at the line, like the old day street racing, because i think it helps spool the T if you're on the upward swing of the R's as the tree drops. This is how I seem to do my best and please don't think i know a thing about dragging at the strip, this was only my 4th time there. I just go with what feels right, for me. Guys, you've been a big help. Now lets hope the previous owner swapped a 3.9 in there and i can drop to a 3.54!
-
dj - sorry, i have a 3.54 sitting on the garage floor from one of my other donor Z's. If i have a 3.90 in there, i'll probably swap the guts like you mentioned or try finding a 3.70lsd. I like the limited slip option, just don't know if it would be low enough (numerically) for how i want it. yo - i'll bet the 3.54 will definitely shave a little off my time. It's not building any real kind of boost in 1 & 2 and i'm really stretching it out in 4th across the line. It would help me all the way through i think. Drax - exactly the way i'm thinking/experiencing. Not enough time to build boost. 525 - if i revved to 4k and dumped it in 2nd, i think my Z would sit and puke. Sliding the clutch out of the hole starting in second wouldn't be feasble either. Possibly if i had a 4.11 but not with a 3.90...if that's what i even have! ha. Whattya guys think of running a 3.70 with the T motor? Think a 3.54 would be better? i'm leaning toward the 3.54 but the LSD option would be very very nice! And i'm sure i can get something built but, i'm not rich like you guys!!

Are they all aluminum? The diff that swapped out of the '82ZXT into my '73 has an aluminum non-finned cover. The other R200's i have are from older non-T Z's and they just have the metal cover. Just curious. Yes, i know about the "pretty quick"!! Shifting like a madman..but it is fun I really don't have a launching RPM with the turbo motor like i did with my N/A motor. Seems to help if i keep revving it up and down, pulling a load on the motor to kind of spool the turbo up. I try timing it so when the light drops, i'm right up near 3-4k. That's what it sounds like anyway since i'm not really watching the tach. I know, probably not the right way or a way to be consistant but, it works for me. If i launched with just holding the R's at a certain level, she'd probably either bog or i'd have to do a lot more slipping of the clutch. I'm still learning at 35
-
dj - Wish you lived closer. would love to run side by side. Fun stuff. Running Dunlop's 215-50-15's. Sliding the ACT clutch without sliding the tires. A 12.7 is awesome. I only wish i was there. Sleeper - I'm kind of betting on it being a 3.90 too. Actually, i'm hoping i am running a 3.90! I'll pull the diff and check the ring by the weekend to be 100%. If it is a 3.90, i'll swap it out with a 3.70lsd or a 3.54 and i think that will help my times a little more. I don't think it has enough time right now to fully spool in the first two gears and i'm running too far past the powerband in 4th at the end of the traps. 62-6300rpm is too high, in my opinion anyway. I even tried to hit 5th a couple of runs...but missed both times Deosn't want to synch so easy into 5th running hard i guess. I ran 12 times that night so i had the oppportunity to play oh yeah, i have a question for you ZXT guys or ones who use the ZXT rear...do all the turbo diffs have the aluminum cover, non finned, like the one i'm using out of the '82ZXT? Thanks.
-
Thanks on the spider info mike. I have no idea what the ratio is either. I did another test this morning on the way to work. With my GPS reading 60mph in 4th gear, my tach was reading 3350rpm. On the trans calculator, with my size tires - 215-50-15 - that equals exactly a 3.9 rear. The tach should have been around 3rpm if it were a 3.54. Yes, i just need to pull the diff. Thanks for the words of motivation! haha.
-
Pete - Thanks. Maybe we can get a few Z's at the track in a few weeks. I need to do a few things also before i go back. We'll hook up. Bastaad - thanks. Yeah, i believe it's calculated from actually the last 66' of the track. I wouldn't think i'd be picking up that much more speed than what my trap speed is at that high of an rpm but, who knows. That's what i'm saying....i go through 1st, 2nd and 3rd so fast that it just doesn't seem like 3.54's. I'll know for sure when i pull the rear. jg - Thanks. My 60ft on that run actually sucked! ummm..i think it was a 1.97 or something close to that. I have pulled a 1.8 which was my best so far. Doing a little clutch slip...just enough to keeo the wheels planted. I would love to try drag radials or slicks but i think that would be like cheating or something. I like to run it the way i drive it everyday Then again...if i can get like a mid 12......hmmmm.....
