Here Comes Trouble - PM sent. John

I went to the Amelia Island Concourse d'Elegance event in Florida on March 9th. The cars of Parnelli Jones were featured - he was the grand marshal. No Z cars on display. I took several hundred photos which I posted to Photobucket and which can be seen at http://s198.photobucket.com/albums/aa166/johnhaag1/Amelia%20Island%202008/?start=all . The crowd was so big that I had to bounce around from car to car so all the photos for each car aren't located together in Photobucket. I couldn't stay all day so I didn't begin to get photos of everything. John

Headers for '90 5.7L TPI in 280Z
jhaag replied to sstallings's topic in Gen I & II Chevy V8 Tech Board
I've got a '79 ZX which has an '89 TPI engine. I bought blockhuggers from JTR and had a local shop weld the smog tubes to them so that I can run all of the smog equipment that came on the engine (still stock). My setup may not be relevant to what you are doing, though. John -

Article - Datsun 280-ZX Turbo, Car & Driver, May 1981
jhaag replied to jhaag's topic in Non Tech Board
I'm glad you found the article interesting. All of the articles (over 40 articles but only some are about the ZX) that I posted can be found by searching this Non-Tech Board using 'article' as the search term. John -

Dan: I regret to say that the Denver library responded to my article request this way: "This item cannot be found as cited." We know the magazine existed because of the 1975 issue on eBay. I'm guessing that it was such a small circulation magazine that no libraries have felt the need to archive it. Have you had any luck on the suggestions I gave you? Can you post a "wanted to buy" ad on eBay? John

Since you sent me a private message before posting here a day later, I sent the following info to you via a private message. Since it does not appear that you have read your private message, I am posting the info here. I do not have the article but I did a little checking. Unfortunately my golden source of old car magazines was called Car Books (a bookstore in Denver) but it is now closed. 1. I did the obvious by Googling the article title - no hits. 2. I Googled "Small Car Performance Magazine" and found a magazine listed on eBay by that name so I think that is likely to be the magazine title you want. 3. I checked the periodicals held by the Denver Public Library system but no luck. 4. I checked a database of magazines but did not find it listed. 5. I searched WorldCat without luck. WorldCat is a world-wide database of books in all of the public libraries in the U.S. and Britain. It does not seem to index magazines but I thought I'd try. 6. I searched online for 'used magazine stores' and there are some listed. However, in my experience, they do not have the more obscure magazines since there is probably not much demand for them. They tend to stock the big names like Car & Driver or Road & Track. You might want to contact some of them to see if there is any kind of national 'hot line' or method that magazine shops work with each other to find obscure magazines for customers. 7. My last and best hope is something called "Request It" offered through my library. I submitted an official request for the magazine article. I have been able to obtain an amazing number of obscure and out-of-print car books using this service. The down side is that the service tends to take several weeks and sometimes I strike out. I will keep my fingers crossed for good luck. I would like to read (and post to this site) the article. Some things you might consider doing: You could contact the Detroit Public Library's National Automotive History Collection http://www.detroit.lib.mi.us/nahc/ . They have the largest collection (by far!) of automotive books, magazines and newspapers in the nation. They will help people on a fee basis. Just for reference, here is the link to the eBay listing for the magazine. The issue for sale is the June, 1975 issue but the cover photo and articles listed on the cover do not refer to your car. The magazine is being sold by someone who sells 'Vette stuff but it might be worth contacting him to see if he has any other issues. Here is the link: http://cgi.ebay.com/JUNE-1975-SMALL-...cmd ZViewItem If you could learn the name of the publisher of the magazine and if the publisher is still in business, perhaps they would have some back issues. I think it is unlikely they are still around but it might be worth asking the eBay seller to look on page 2 or 3 of the magazine and tell you the name, address and phone number of the publisher. Send him a couple of bucks for his effort. If you haven't already done so, you might want to post your message in the Dime Quarterly on the 510 website. There are some parts that fit the 510 and the Z so there are a number of Z lovers on the site. http://dimequarterly.tierranet.com/ Regards, John

I have about 10-15 hail dents (perhaps nickel size) on the roof of my ZX. I'm going to see a dent repair shop (Denver Dent) on Friday and I hope he will do all of them for a flat fee. I've heard of some people getting a flat fee - any educated guesses on what a fair price would be? Thanks! John

I don't know where to obtain them but I'm guessing they are only available in Japan. I'm thinking of ways to make a set (laser cut aluminum side plates?) that could be easily/quickly disasembled for storage. Or perhaps just the bottom horizontal spacers could be removed so they could nest for storage yet be strong enough to safely support a car. John

The first one was at the MSA show several years ago. As food for thought, I included photos of several other types that I saved from a variety of sources, perhaps from this site (I don't remember). The blue Z photos are from Eric Nyerlin. The stands under the formula car are a bit extreme but shorter, beefier versions could be made - I like the concept since a creeper could probably navigate over the base plate. I also like the ones under the stock car since they could be made so they nest in order to save storage space - a street rod place sells ones made for lighter cars that are made from fiberglass and they look to be well made in their photo - I think they were about $50 each. Here is a list of articles about the Z up until 1989; the list includes a number of magazines published in countries other than the U.S. The book from which the list is taken is Z Car: a legend in its own time by Ben Millspaugh (1991 1st ed.- ISBN: 083063536X). It is available at about 100 public libraries in the U.S. I never thought I would post the list so I didn't worry about marking it up with my own notes. John

Pete84: Unfortunately I didn't save many articles or road tests about the 240/260/280 Zs. I have posted about 50 articles in the Non-Tech Board (to find them, do a search in that board using article as the search term) but none are road tests of Zs. I have a list of 'all' Z articles that were published - the list was created by someone else. I will look for it and post it soon in this thread. I got most of the 50 articles from a used magazine store that has since closed. I imagine eBay would be a source for them as well as the public library. John
