Recommended Location ECM for Daily Driver LS1
jeff81 replied to jeff81's topic in Gen III & IV Chevy V8Z Tech Board
I have a T56 Tremec Magnum that I will be using. I really appreciate the feedback. Jeff -
Yes, I ordered the track pack. I, like others, am waiting for the parking brake. All the parts will get hard anondized since this will be a daily driver. The radiator is getting finished up. I am concerned since they installed a SPAL fan, but it is the one with the unsealed motor. I told them of the overheating issues that some people seem to be having, so they did what I asked and got the strongest fan, but the problem with that is the warning from some of the sites that sell it. One site has caution do not use in wet or dusty situations. Another site has do not use for extended periods of time. Should I be concerned?

Recommended Location ECM for Daily Driver LS1

I really appreciate all the help and direction. I feel it always best to ask then do something and hope for the best. Jeff -
I am in the process of having a LS1 conversion. The builder would like to know the best locaton for the ECM and components. I am using an LS1 crate engine, stock ECM, and having a custom engine harness made with emissions deletes. With the custom harness, I would think that would make using inside the cabin as a good idea? I would think that in th cabin would be a recommended location, but input from those experienced would be great. All recommendations or ideas are greatly appreciated. Pictures and descriptions would be great since I will need to supply them with specifics. Thank you for your help on this. Jeff

I am about to get it towards the body shop. The body man told me that the one I have will need extensive bondo and is unsure how well it will work. I am looking for just the center lower valence on a 280Z. Please contact me if you have one in reasonably good condition. Thank you Jeff

Some updates - Things are finally looking up. Thanks to Dave AZC for the full tack pack. I also did something that is not commonly seen, I ordered his Q45 rear differential front mount. I will post extensive picts later next week. Still fitting everything. I will be adding AZC parking brake, rear CVs, and few other suspension things. Starting to get the firewall prepared for a Vintage Air GenII. I think it will be the mini. I am going to try a Dakota Digital Climate Control system. More picts and updates to come.

I completely understand. I am overall very happy about everything. I really am just hoping that they won't charge me for the hourly pay on the removal of the rollbar. I am not going to be over the top. Like I said, the quality is really good, just lacking communication. It is money wasted and some time wasted, but this is no easy cut and dry process. I am happy that things are progressing quite quickly. They are a good shop. The buider has done excellent work. Thanks for the advice and recommendations. I can use all the help I can get. Jeff

Hey thanks for all the help and suggestions. I did not design it that way. I went into that portion of the project with a plan that I stated may or may not work with the type of seats that I was going to use to address my height and the overall use of the car. Thanks to all the previous listings, I really had a great idea on the design. It just did not work out. The seat fabrication and all the other fab work was excellent. The rollbar build was also great, but not to the specs that I specified after having done many hours of research. It was unfortunate that the miscommunication and misunderstanding has occured. I am having them cut it out. If the rollbar was unable to do as desired with the seats makes it not able to stay. I am planning on a 85-90% daily driver, thus I knew the rollbar was a stretch to begin with. I just wish they would have been more careful to what I asked for them to do. Its a complicated large build, and so far this is the only issue. Still have not worked out the issue of money associated with the rollbar, and that conversation will be occuring in the coming weeks. Overall, do the lesson learned is do your research and stand on top of the builder. Jeff

Well, with the seats I have bought and the way the mounts were fabricated, they declared that the is no way to get it the way I originally asked for. I have to either keep it or have them cut it out and go without. With the seats I have purchased and the mounts having been finished, I will either just have them cut it out or leave it as is. The seats fit in well, with no issues in regards to the roof and fabricated rollbar. So, should I just pay to have them cut it out or leave it in there as is? Please let me know. I think with the other strengthening to the body, I am leaning to having it removed and go without unitl I find a shop I can trust or a definative need for a rollbar? It will be a daily driver, so maybe best without it. Jeff

Admin - you can delete the thread. Thanks Jeff

They went through and redid all the seat mounts. The issues when test fitting have been my longish legs. I bought a super low sitting seat so headroom is almost a non-factor. The issue is the leg room with how the seats are in there now. I am thinking about just going without and hope the following pictures of the floor supports will be enough to keep the body from twisting and staying in shape. Jeff

Pictures below. I am unsure whether I am going to just remove the rollbar that is in it now. It was not designed how I asked, but part of the problem ia a general complication of space. I am 6'3", 230 lbs. I'm too large to fit with the desired rollbar, so the fabricator took many liberties. I probably would have just gone without it if he had just explained that what I wanted was not possible. But since it is done, I may just keep it to hep support the unibody. Still unsure of what to do with that, but everything else is going well. Let me know opinions on what to do with the not to spec rollbar. Jeff

Then, should I have them cut it out and go without one? I have had them do some strengthening to the chassis other than the rollbar. I am told that to do it right, I will not be able to fit. So should I just cut it out and hope the chassis is supportive enough for a basic LS3? Thanks for the information and help with this issue. Jeff

I was wondering if this might be accepted in open track events, hot laps at car clubs events, or other type of similar activities. I am 6'3" and 235. This arrangement allows for the seats not to be too far forward. I know that it will not pass the requirements for an SCCA race. I am just hoping that the other type of events may be possible? What is the verdict? Do I need to try to find an alternative or do something else. I really could use some experience from people that have gone to different events. Jeff

Things are progressing well. I will be going out to the builder to check on the car. Got a roof panel shipped. Need the diagonal to go through the main hoop, supports to the strut towers, and the harness bar. Pictures to be coming soon. The seats are getting finalized. The roof panel, fenders, and fender flares to be handled than the car needs to get sealed. Changed to AZ Z Car "Track Pack" for the Q45 rear differential. Jeff

Roof Panel and Door Skins would be great.

Hey I am in the Memphis and looking for a Z to sit in. I am having issues with a seat conversion and need to try seats out to figure out the issue that I am having. I am 6'3" and trying to get somethin to work. Contact me so I get an idea of what to do. I dont even have the stock seats to figure this out, so I am clueless on where to go from here. Jeff

Hey I am trying to fit in a rollbar in a car to be used as street and occational track car. I have all the rules and regulations regarding the roll bar, except one. What is the max tilt that can be done to the main hoop? I am thinking about trying to tilt the main hoop to deal with the lack of headroom and my size in the car. As of now I am considering to tilt the main hoop towards the hatch to clear things up, but in doing so what is the limitation of this idea? The idea is to make it so I will be able to do some hot-laps and similar activities occationally, like at Z conventions and other open track activities. Let me know if this idea is even possible. Depending on the angle to tilt the main hoop will impact what options that I may have on this build. Jeff

ZCC - Custom Tail Project (Rear Spoiler)

Hope things are still going forward. It looks great. Looking forward to getting my project further along to put one on it. Jeff -
I am looking for a source to get the ring and pinion, and the other seals to rebuild a Q45 rear diff from a 1995 Q45 with stock components. Not wanting to do anything crazy just prep for install in my normal LS1, T56 Magnum car. I have not found a site to figure out about how much to replace the ring and pinion and the other wear parts. Please send me to someone or website with the needed parts. Thanks Jeff

I am wondering if I should take a risk and rebuild a T56 that is in unknown condition or buy a new T56? The transmission that I have was picked up at a pull-a-part. I have no idea of what may be needed to rebuild it. I cannot do the work myself. What would you suggest? I was given a general rebuild from 750-1700 depending on how bad it is, while a new T56 magnum costs 2700. Any input would be appreciated. Jeff

Progress being made. I had the car with another builder. That did not work out well. This summer I sent my car to another builder. They are a full race team with side projects. Below are the updates on the current state of the car. I am thinking about having a T56 transmission rebuilt or buying a T56 magnum transmission. Not sure of exactly what to do. The car has had the subframe installed. I am in the process of ordering the JCI engine and transmission mount. Then I will be ordering AZ Z Car complete road race setup. Hopfully progress can continue to be made.

I know. I saw a building on Lamar with 3 Zs of pre-1978 age. I was just wondering if you knew anything about that? My Z is getting completely overhauled at a local race shop. Jeff
