  1. I've worked on a 9-3 before - it was fairly easy. I know what you're talking about - I don't know why they set up the engine/tranny like that -- or what they gain out of it. The 9-3 was nothing compared to what you had to go through.

  2. The fact that the car had to be jumpstarted was testimony to the fact that the alternator wire and it's corresponding solderless butt connnetor had, well, separated. That and the numerous shorts that were discovered post race probably contributed to the loss of the last race and subsequent car.

I think if it were done right, it would have been a different outcome.

I wonder what we could do if we did it right.

Wiring was not the culprit of the misfire - the plugs were. I've seen you post over, and over, and over about how the shabby wiring job cost us the race, but if you remember Garrett's post after he got the car back, he reported that the misfire was gone after replacing the plugs. Also, that wire running to the coil that had shorted and melted the insulation, was not like that when the misfire had taken place. Mike had that car for quite a while before it was picked up - he could have been fiddling around with something in the engine bay or inside the car, causing the firewall to cut into the wire. I believe within the last hour of going to the race, he swapped in his own MSD unit to make sure it wasn't causing the misfire, so after he got the car back he could have been swapping the other unit back in and caught the wire on the firewall. There's no telling what caused it to happen, but it wasn't shorted during the time of the race. Sure, the wiring could have been better, but that's not what caused the engine to miss. I, along with the rest of the team, spent hours the night/morning before the race tracing wires in hopes of finding a short.

  3. really 2.70 that'sa grip, i'd but that diesel converter, and make my own...plus it'd smell like burgers. And i don't know aboot that 7.3 pulling more, cause my friends wouldn't make it up my drive way, where the 6.0 did. But i don't want to argue just learn.

I'd listen to Sven, he knows what he's talking about. The diesel techs are always flooded with 6.0s...it's rediculous how many problems those engines have. FWIW, 2 of the techs own Ford diesels, and they're all 7.3s.

  4. I just watched the clips on YouTube from the HybridZ races. Great job by everyone on the team. I do have one question tho... and Im NOT second guessing anyone here... just curious. It seems like everyone on that show sprays... why didnt yall throw a bottle in there? I really think yall could have taken it with a bottle. But it was still an awesome job by the build team and Garretts driving.

The engine was missing badly...nitrous wouldn't have helped. We wouldn't have needed nitrous to win had the engine been running as planned.

  5. The way my exhaust setup is, the collector goes straight down between the frame and the intermediate shaft, then makes its 90* bend towards the rear of the car.

I can picture it working with these headers as they have a similar design, but I doubt it would work because you're absolutely right, that intermediate shaft is a b*tch.

  6. I bought a pair of 2.5" electric cutouts for that purpose, but I really don't have any room to mount them. From the tranny to the tailpipe, my exhaust hangs too low to mount the cutouts - they would sit around 3 inches off the ground, so they would be destroyed in no time. The only place I may be able to possibly squeeze them in would be between the headgasket and when then pipes make the 90* bend to run parallel with the chassis, but even then, the space is ridiculously limited. I'm planning on buying a couple of Dynomax Ultraflow bullet mufflers to replace the Flowmaster Super Delta 40 series in hopes of increasing exhaust flow as much as possible, and hopefully eliminating the horrible resonance noise. Since the bullets are straight-through mufflers, I probably won't bother with cutouts.

280w/383 - Do you have a full exhaust system on your Zx, or does it just simply end behind the front tires?

  7. No kidding, guess I should keep supporting the habbit, huh? You know it's bad when your signifcant other gives you crap about spending more time on Hybridz than her.

My birthday will be at the end of the month, and since I'm in college, I can expect to see a few bucks. Therefore, I'll gladly pass the proceeds on to my addiction.
