  1. It came back! Just got a notice in the mail stating that I have another court date scheduled for May 9th (I think) for the speeding ticket. I stopped by the office at lunch, but go figure, only on Wednesdays do they close at 12:00. I hope this just turns out to be something minor. The thing that worries me is that I have no proof/signatures that they dismissed the ticket. I asked them if I needed to sign anything and they told me that I didn't have to, and I was free to go. Lewis -- please advise!!! I'm assuming it was filed without prejudice, but for what reason would it be brought back up again? Ahhh...this stinks

  2. Definatly balance the wheels, and take them to a place that can re-index your tires (also called "road force"). Also, just because the vibration still exists at 60mph in neutral doesn't exclude the fact that it could still be a driveline vibration. The driveshaft, rear end, etc. are still rotating, so I would also advise that you check your driveline angles. But first, I would definately get your wheel assemblies balanced and re-indexed. You may even have a bent rim that's causing the problem -- I wouldn't think so since you say it drives smooth before 50 and after 75, but then again, I've seen some weird stuff happen with vibrations. Good luck

  3. nope

there's an episode where they're on an island' date=' and they've got those round chairs, and homer keeps getting drugged.[/quote']

Same episode :-) . When Homer runs out of gossip, he begins to make stuff up, and ends up saying something about flu shots given at certain times of the year to control shopping trends -- it was something like that. Anyways, some people capture him, and take him to that island. Yes, I've watched Simpsons way too many times.

  4. The headers thing is bs. As long as you don't have a leak, you should be fine. I remember 1968 is an important year for smog, I just can't remember if it's when cars started coming with smog equipment from the factory, or if 1968 is the year that cars are subject to the required smog equipment under the hood. 1982 and newer vehicles are subject to an emissions test (if inspection station is equipped), so just keep going to the small gas stations that only do safety inspections. I believe Dallas is using an ASM test (where they put your car on the dyno and use the sniffer), so I'd stay the hell away from there :-) . Other than that, an air cleaner will not fail inspection (from what I remember), but I do remember something about a hot air riser -- I'm just not used to working with them. All I can remember is that it's something that is supposed to route warm air to the carburetor for emissions purposes, I believe.

If I remember correctly, the only thing under the hood you're supposed to have a smog pump, egr valve/tube/etc., good belts, non-leaking master cylinder with proper fluid level, and non-leaking p/s pump with proper fluid level (to hell with the alternator, waterpump, etc.) All I've done in the past was just slip them a few extra $$$ and they wouldn't argue. Sounds like your last gas station will be your best bet.

  5. I've made contact with him. He constructed the fiberglass himself over a duration of 4 years. Here's what he told me:

When I finished it in '96, I was offered $12,000 by a friend. Now things have changed.... All those before mentioned pieces were hand made on the car by

myself over a FOUR year process, working on weekends-off and on. They are

one of a kind, NOT a kit, as I am a sculptural artist and did this car out

love, back when it wasn't the popular thing to do. The only kit pieces are

the 4" IMSA flares and IMSA whaletail which is also modified with the

extension and the front spoiler "bones". The driprails are shaved also. The rear end was damaged 16 years ago by my Dad and Mom, it a

garage sale-ghost riding fiasco. All damage is fixable, and the car can be

finished I can do it. The frame is rust free, at least is was last time I

inspected it. EXPECT to see a car in need of help, it is rusty, dirty and begging for a friend!!

He gave me directions to the car's location, so I'll probably be checking it out tomorrow, or when weather permits. I told him I would be taking pictures on behalf of a forum dedicated to modified Zs, and he told me to ask if any of you were interested in a front clip he made for his 280z. I didn't get a price from him.

  6. Man, I remember those "nothing but warranty" days at my old dealership, where I would be lucky to get 40 hours in two weeks -- a lot of pointless squeaks, rattles, or vibrations that I had to deal with, and a few times it was because coins, a paperclip, etc. was in a cupholder or something! But ever since I moved to Austin, I've been booking 65-70 hours a week (average). So far, my highest week was 98.9 hours -- I would've had barely over 100 hours, but I was multi-teched on a job that I did pretty much all of the work on, so they split the hours 50/50. Anyways, that was still a really nice paycheck! Hopefully you'll see the same kind of change. Over here, instead of having team leaders like my old shop had, we have a central Dispatch for everyone -- I like that setup a lot better. Except for when I accidentally typed my team leader's password -- haha, it was so much fun until I got caught. But anyways...good luck on the new job.

  7. Well, that's the name of my '77 280z. She's been in paint jail for a long time now, but I can finally see some light at the end of the tunnel. This weekend, my friend and I sanded everything down with 80 grit. The bondo is pretty self explanatory...anyways, primered it, resanded with 180 grit, primered again, and called it quits. All that remains is to sand it down again with 400, do some minor touchups and other body modifications, and she'll be ready for the sprayer.

*Warning: several pictures of pointless bodywork progress on a 2+2*

Lotsa fun with the bondo bucket:

And after sanding down with 180

Talk about a lot of sweat and blood (damn license plate bracket) going into that car -- yes, I realize I'm polishing a turd, but for some reason, the girlfriend wants it, so at least it's an excuse to have another Z in the family.

  8. Too bad you're not down here - I have a connection on an '03 Mustang GT with 45,000 miles for $14,300. Just add ESP to that, and you're good to roll. Speaking of which, I've been driving it for the past two weeks or so, and one night when I was on I-35, an SRT-4 pulled beside me, wanting to race me. He had an aftermarket BOV and when he spooled up his turbo, it didn't make a little pssssss noise, but more of a ssshhhhh noice -- it sounded massive. I was in 3rd gear, and he couldn't ever pull ahead of me. It actually suprised me, I figured he'd walk away. But anyways, I'd take a C5 Z06 any day.

  9. The only time I ever got a warning for speed was when I had a radar detector. With the detector, I didn't receive any more than two tickets for speeding. I've been driving without one for three years, and I've received roughly 6 additional speeding tickets -- no warnings. I know this makes me sound like an ignorant speed demon, all of the tickets either came from 8mph or under on the highway, or from speedtraps. I've read books on fighting/beating speeding tickets, and they all say that you do have more of a chance for getting a speeding ticket if you have a radar detector, and an even larger one if the officer sees one on your floorboard (thinking that you're trying to hide it.) I feel confident that half of the 6 tickets I received while driving without a radar could've been avoided had I been using a radar.

As far as jammers go, check this site out: http://www.radarbusters.com/products/jammers/default.asp

I think your best bet for a jammer would be a homemade (illegal) one. From my understanding, I've read that they're illegal because they violate certain FCC laws. Come to think of it, I believe it was the anarchist's cookbook that had instructions on how to build it -- I can't quite remember, though, it's been a while.

So Mr. Maudlin, does this mean I'm free? Or can this come back later to haunt me. I'm assuming that since they said the ticket was dismissed, that's the end of it, correct?
