This is just a tip maybe for some of you out there with the desire to fabricate things but can't afford the tools or material. I am graduating this december with a degree in computer science from a highly engineering/manufacturing oriented university. Many of my friends are in the engineering/manufacturing field and thus I spend some time in the CNC/ machine shops visiting them. What I have noticed is the number of retirees, non degree seeking people in there. After talking with them I thought I would pass on an idea. If you live near a university with great machine/fabrication shops pay the few hundred dollars and take an entry level manufacturing class. Chances are you will have after hours access to the shop and can bulid whatever you want using the schools materials and equipment. Many of my friends take blueprints off people and manufacture custom car parts using CNC equipment and free high quality material from the school. I took all the drawings from the JTR book and gave them to my friends little brother. He made them all on a CNC machine for a school project, they cost me nothing! He is willing to make any parts for me for free! Some of these guys can make incredible custom parts to high tolerances. Anyways this is a long enough post, I was just thinking that maybe some you might be able to fork out a couple hundred for one class and save some money in the long run. And yes I do realize that universities aren't meant to supply people with free materials but students are often encouraged to use the facilites as much as possible.

Good book for learning about carbs...
jonzer12 replied to jonzer12's topic in Gen I & II Chevy V8 Tech Board
I am looking at some well worn stock SBC's to get me started. I plan on sinking my money into suspension/cosmetics right off the bat and worry about a strong motor later. With that being the priority I have some leads on some well worn small blocks in need of light rebuilds. I plan on stripping it down to the shortblock, putting in new gaskets and cleaning up the carb (stock 4bl). I hope that will last me a few years. What I need is a basic book on carbs to get me started. Will the repair manual for the year/model of car the engine is from suffice or does anyone know of a book just about basic carb setup/ cleaning/ rebuilding. -
Hi guys, I am planning on starting my sbc swap in the spring, I have been actively looking for a decent Z, bought the JTR book already and have been brushing up on my auto/fab skills (which are very limited right now). I've come to the realization that I know nothing about carbs. I don't even know how to tune one. I was wondering if anyone knows of a good "carbs for dummies" type book to get me started. I know the basic theory behind a carb, the functions of jets/choke etc but I have never even owned a carbed veh, much less worked on one. Anyways, enough yapp'n, pls help me out.

I neglect the woman in order to pay for car stuff...I think she is catching on tho....

You are not alone, I have done similar things and I will continue to do so. Hurts doesn't it?

Just for my own information could someone better explain what he means? I know I can't offer any help on this but I would at least like to understand the question. Thank you

Should I travel 5 hours to get this car? Any Opinions???

If the body isn't bad and the repairs are already underway than buy it, for 100 dollars?? Worst comes to worst, you drag it back and a few weeks later you decide its not the z for you, so strip the car, sell of the parts easily make your $100 investment back, plus some cash for your time and keep some rare or especially good condition parts for yourself. I say if you have the time go get it. -
Its a show for ricers, all show no go, no useful information, incorrect info, and two fairy hosts who look like they have never gotten their hands dirty.

First step, buy "Maximum Bootst" written by Corky Bell. Its the equivalent of the bible for FI freaks, you won't regret it. If you are going to attempt a turbo project make sure YOU know whats going on. Trial and error with a turbo setup can be very destructive, I have seen the results. That said I am sure a pure chevy equivalent of hybridz.org could answer most of your questions. Unfortunately I am not familiar with any. I am not at all knowledgable about FI but I would suggest finding a "proven" turbo setup for the SBC and just copying it best as you can. Good Luck and keep us posted. Thats all I can offer, sorry.

Thanks for responding I was just browsing ontariozcar.com saw your car and was interested in how you accomplished the v12 swap. I searched for your old posts and it was some interesting reading. I am not interested in attempting the v12 thing (way over my head and budget) I am currently working/saving for a SBC swap, so far I have parts but no car, I can't find one with a worthy body in Ontario that I can afford.

I am still in the research and development stage of my project but I click the "new posts" link about 6 times a day, if I am at work I check the site every hour to see if there is new posts, might I have a problem?

Fire extinguisher plus a "nice" calender for the back of the door.

Thats sound advice above. Don't rush into anything that requires a large investment such as a hybrid project. Enjoy the car for a few months, if you find you don't like it or its not what you thought it was you can just sell it with minimal loss, also if you don't have the skills (much like myself) be sure you have the equipment, patience and will to finish the project or you could just end up selling it half done at a huge loss. Not trying to be negative, I have just seen it too many times. Good Luck

Anyone ever visit http://www.ontariozcar.com? If you hit "Club Rides" at the top you can see a white 71 z with a v12, I was wondering if the owner was on this site or had a website, I am interested in reading more about it. I thought for sure it would have been on hybridz.org but a few searches for v12 came up empty....

I am not the only one that hates oval racing?

How about I send you my resume? lol.

I always buy borla, incredible quality at a rediculously high price!

Where did you get your engine for 2800? Was it complete or just a longblock assembly, did it include the belt system + accessories, intake and carb? Lately when I talk to people about prices they laugh at me but they already own v8 cars and keep their alternator, starter etc. I need to buy everything new so I think it might be the way to go. Well I am gonig to check out a black 76 280z in town tommorow, so wish me luck, although I am willing to bet that its going to be rusted all to @#*@. WHY DO PEOPLE STORE CARS FOR YEARS ON GRASS????????? Am I the only one that has noticed this terrible phenomenon?

Great tips, thanks for the advice, unfortunately I live in a town of 80,000 which is 8 hours away from the nearest big metropolitan center. We have one performace shop, "eagle engines", and a small 1/4 mile oval track, the nearest strip is an 1/8th mile about 2 hours away in a place called Elliot Lake. Car enthusiasts are few and far between up here, and we only only have 5 months of snow/salt free weather. I feel lonely....

This is actually very easy, all you need is a switch and a card to interpret the signals, the program is a piece of cake, you can pick up a serial card and some old switches for very cheap, then all you need is the sound files you want and a program to interpet the signals from the serial card. I once wrote a simple delphi program to something similar, 15$ equipment, 30 mins of work. Why you want to do this is another story....lol

Texas hot? This may sound ignorant but I flew from Detroit to Mexico with a stopover in Dallas last feburary and my cold prepped Canadian #$@ was frozen, I thought Texas was going to be warm, I couldn't stay outside long enough to have a smoke. Yes that is incredibly ignorant but I also met 3 doctors from Florida who drove their 3 new snow machines to Ontario last June and were upset that there was no snow! I think this may be off topic.....

Hello all, I am a newbie to the Z scene and am currently planning my z project. I have little auto knowledge, I have done brake jobs, little body work, a head gasket on my jeep nothing really big but I am handy, know how to read and have some VERY knowledgable friends and family so I have always completed any auto related task I have started. Rebuilding an engine is pretty scary for me tho so I think I will buy a crate motor for my first REAL project. I am still looking for a Z in good enough shape for the JTR conversion but I have been seriously looking for a motor so I could begin to tackle that big learning curve. I came across http://www.enginefactory.com and was wondering if anyone has ever purchased something from them before or if anyone thinks its a bad idea to buy a motor from them. Being that I am about to sink a large amount of money into a project that right now I don't have the skills to complete the idea of a broken in, tuned engine is quite attractive, it would take a lot of stress and research away from the project. I am having a hard time finding another place to find a COMPLETE engine. Anyways, opinions anyone?

I am not sure about Canada to US, but have experienced the US to Canada process, and it wasn't much trouble at all, except for paying duty. Try reading on http://www.customs.ustreas.gov/ you should be able to find all you need, the Canadian site explained everything for me, hopefully this will do it for you, good luck.
