hey guys. its been awhile since i posted here. my 81 280zx 5 speed ate its rear end back in january. i decided to buy a new car and just fix this one later on down the road. so here i am, i bought a new r180 (well, its used from a 85 PU 4x4) and everything works in the mounting, BUT my driveshaft wont go into the pinion flange. the driveshaft circle on the very end, is 2 1/4" across, and the flange is only 2" across. it wont fit into it... i remember the driveshaft fitting into the old differential, so im curious what to do. can i swap the flange out with a different one that fits the driveshaft, or do i need to get a differnet driveshaft? or am i stuck and have to use a different dif? thanks -phil

Haha. Nope. I knew for a fact the hydraulics were okay. Got the new plate and friction disc in today, and it works like a dream. unfortunately i broke the exhaust and have to run open header until tommorow morning.

i love this stuff, man. i have a 81 280zx, NA, w/ 5 speed, and 2 seater. The clutch started slipping, so i bought a clutch kit and flywheel from NAPA. turns out they gave me the wrong clutch kit (they gave me one for a 2+2), right flywheel. so then they tell me i cant get the right one until monday (today). i went to AutoZone (EEK!) and got the right size clutch. Put it in, Still slips. pulled the tranny out, looked to be all ok, put it back, figuring we'd installed it wrong the first time. Nope. Still Slips. So the clutch from NAPA comes in today, and im gonna have the kit from them in today. I'm thinking my original pressure plate went bad, and then the plate from AutoZone was bad to begin with. Anyone agree? Other possibilities? Hydraulics are all ok.

haha no she doesnt, but i do. surprise surprise! haha. im not too much into that "emo" thing though. some of the bands are good, but im more into the "hardcore" genre, as its called. checked craigslist, found some but no replies from the people yet.

dan, did you get any kind of ride in larry's car? i got a short ride in it once. didnt go too fast because of the neighborhood, but DAMN it plants you in the seat!

ok so there have been no replies =/ if i cover the opening on the TVV, the engine runs like crap. ok, so maybe not it. anyone care to point me in another direction to fix the popping?

any chance i can have the MAF??!?!?!

well im a genious and never checked the local parts stores picked one up with my student discount for $26 bucks. installed it, and there is still less popping then there was before all this, but more than when i had the harness side of teh wire grounded out. what about the themal vacuum valve? what can i do about that, it seems like that would be un-AFM metered air entering the system...?

i just recently replaced all but 1 or 2 vacuum lines which looked in ok condition, but were mostly just gonna be a pain to get to . so should i reconnect the sensor for the time being? i replaced the clogged cat a few weeks back and was advised to replace the sensor, but at $110 bucks from nissan i couldnt afford it. as far as the vacuum leaks go, the "thermal vacuum valve" that sits about dead center on the intake manifold always seems to be sucking air in from the backside... would this be a problem, and how do i fix it?

ok so my exhaust had a really bad problem with popping/backfiring... i had a feeling my O2 sensor was bad, so i disconnected it and grounded the harness side to the intake manifold, and the popping is virtually gone, but i noticed my gas mileage is HORRIBLE now. bout 50 miles on a 1/4 tank. is it a good idea to leave it grounded, and just deal with the low mileage? or should i connect it back up and just live with the popping until i get the new sensor? also, with it grounded, im running really lean right? or am i backwards, and really running rich now? im not used to old nissan electronics, i dont know if its the same as cars today.

i have a AVI clip, bout 520kb that needs to be hosted. anyone? it sounds really good. i still have a backfire though, youll hear it in the clip. anyone know a common reason to have this problem? i passed smog but the CO was a tad high... too rich? bad o2? i dont know this car very well yet on a technical standpoint. haha.

for the primer, i really dont care. this car is a fix and sell project, because im thinking of getting an s30 or 510 for my next car. i got this car for free, and it had some body damage, then the head gasket went. like i said, i got bored and just painted it. if it flakes off, it flakes off. haha

yes, the lettering is black as well. i was thinking of doing them polished but i wasnt so sure how to do it. i lke how it came out in all black though.

not sure what year your looking for, i have a faded black , looks brown rear hatch from a 80 280zx i can sell ya. has rear wiper installed. let me know.

had it off for a head gasket job, got bored, and thought id do a quick little painting of it. before: after: not bad for just cleaning it off and using 2 coats of gloss black engine paint eh?

well i failed smog, the cat was destroyed. the shop is putting a high flow cat on, 2.5" pipes, and a glasspack muffler with a tailpipe to look stock. ill take a sound clip/vid when i pick it up tommorow, and ill post it here. first mod to the new Z! btw its a 1981 280zx non-turbo 5 speed.

so without the spark arrestor, and being home made, with regular rubber hosing, it will still pass smog? thats been the dilemma. i have to pass smog legally this time around, and was worried about that. thanks guys. i love you all. ahaha

i need a new valve cover breather tube for my 81 280zx... none of the local parts stores have it or can get it and sia di have to go to the dealer.... well the dealer cant get it either. does anyone have one i can buy or where can i find one?
