  1. OOOOOH! Gives me shivers down my spine just reading this. I can't wait. I just dropped the 383 in my car and I just hooked up the driveshaft just an hour ago. The next step is to hook up the turbos and plumb the exhaust. It's going to take a bit of work, but I'm persistent and it shouldn't take too long. I have a question for you Hanns. I heard you made your manifolds out of square tubing. I'm thinking of something along those lines. I have tried a boatload of stock manifolds and even found a "cheap" set of stainless steel turbo headers on EBay (I hope this ends up working, but I'm skeptical). Nothing has been entirely satifactory. Square tubing seems to make sense to me. After all, it is easy to work with assemble headers from. Besides, who says all header tubing has to be round? It seems to me that square tubing would give a little more area for exhaust to flow. What are your thoughts about this, and do you have pictures?
  2. If I were to do it again, I would just add a couple of hair dryers to a well built 350 rather than a 383 (I am about to drop a 383TT in my car). We like to say that there is no replacement for displacement, but that is not true. Boost is the replacement for displacement. At 1 bar (about 15psi) you are effectively doubling the size of your motor (15 psi of atmosphere and 15 psi of boost). A 350 therefore becomes a 700 ci swamp rat motor and the 383 becomes 766--not really as significant of a difference. Also, the greater torque of a 383 could be a liability when the boost kicks in. You may already be spinning your wheels with 450 ft-lb of torque, and adding boost on top of that will only cause you sit and spin more. Along those lines, I would consider using a single, larger turbo to simplify the installation. Turbos are not really that much more complex relative to superchargers when you consider the benefit of easily adjustable boost. Dual turbos are a theoretical advantage because you can use smaller quicker spooling turbos to reduce turbo lag. I don't think lag is as much an issue with a V8, however. Even a 350 can make enough torque to burn rubber. Boost that kicks in at low RPM's can worsen traction problems. A larger turbo, such a the bigger T-series turbos that kick in with greater amounts of boost at higher RPMs would feel like you have a rocket behind you. . Whatever you chose, I think you have to plan well and bolster your suspension, brakes, chassis, etc. I'm still not sure what I'm going to do about my rear end. I've got an R200 with a Quaife. That's not the weak link, I'm told. It's the axle shafts, which are prone to fail long before the differential. I use Ross's CV half shafts. Hope they last. I don't really want to switch to a solid Ford diff, and independent rear Ford or Jag assemblies cost mucho bucks. Maybe I should form a betting pool to see how long my rear lasts. The winner gets a really nice rear with a Quaife LSD-you would only need to replace an axle shaft. Anyway, have fun, boost away. BTW, I'll hopefully be posting pics of my turbo motor in a few days, just before I drop it into the engine bay.
  3. Well, I've been skeptical of how effective intercooler sprayers are, since as the article says, you really want the sprayer to come on prior to full load. By the time the boost comes, its too late. I'm sure you could figure out a mechanical way to have it shut off under boost, when it's not needed, but it would probably activate in certain situations when you didn't want it to (such as sitting at a stoplight). Or you could pony up big bucks and get the intelligent system. My preference is to use the ultimate intelligent system hooked up to your brain. That is, manual activation when you need that extra few horsies to dust those ricers.
  4. Sounds like it's gonna be pretty hot. It's a lot like mine was gonna be before I decided to add a couple of turbos (a la the Turbomeister) except I have a milder cam. Yours is pretty wild. Even with a milder cam, I was planning on making about 425-450 HP, assuming I lived at sea level, which I don't. By the way Turbomeister (if you are listening), why did you decide to turbo a 383? If I were to do it again, I would save a bunch by going with a 350 and making up the difference by cranking up the boost a bit. I guess the extra cubes in a 383 can make you forget about the turbo lag.
  5. You are right. On a recent quiz in Playboy (my partner, who is a woman, has her patients pick out they size they want from magazines, so there are a lot of Playboys around the office-I don't feel comfortable having my patients pick out a centerfold picture by the way), I was only correct 70% of the time in telling whether they were real or not. By the way, my avatars are not real patients-that would violate confidentiality.
  6. Nope. Just some internet chick. I couldn't post patient photos. See my recent thread on the my rotating hot chick avatar. It's all to celebrate my favorite substance, silicone, and its effect on hot chicks.
  7. Tomohawk, I was wondering what prompted this thread. Thoughts like this keep me awake all the time. I just can't stop obsessing about "stuff", and things that I should pay attention to, well, they kind of get put on the back burner by things like whether Goofy is a genius of a dog or Pluto is retarded (after all, they are both dogs and one talks and the other one doesn't)
  8. Well, I've figured out this avatar stuff. I had this stupid bouncing blue smiley face. It was OK, but most of you guys have a really cool one. I thought I would change mine on a rotating basis in celebration of my favorite substance, silicone-love what it does to hot chicks. If anyone is offended, well too bad. I figure I'll change it every week or so. Feel free to rate them.
  9. I think this is so true. It's kind of embarassing to ask basic, stupid questions. There's such a wealth of info already, what is there to add? Personally, I lurked for the longest time, until I realized my limited skills in comic relief and off hand observations could be of some value (I can't compare to Auxillary, though). I guess I could document my twin turbo SBC setup, which hasn't been done that much (soon to come).
  10. This guy was a resource for me in my own SBC turbo build. Keep in mind that he has at least $1400 in the stainless steel headers alone. Personally, I would have saved that money and used flipped around stock manifolds and used the savings to purchase a used EFI system (such as the many TPI setups you see on EBay). Nice job, but it just doesn't make sense to me: megabuck headers and a carb on an application where you would really benefit from EFI?
  11. I should clarify. My current setup is also a multiport system, just like TPI. It looks like this: It does have a throttle body, but it's not TBI.
  12. I have an open question for the forum. I recently picked up a TPI system as part of a twin turbo setup from EBay (paid just over a grand for a ton of stuff plus tons of extras in addition to what you see below) I'm not sure if I want to use the TPI, but then again, I kind of want to just because I've always thought they look great. I already have an Electromotive TEC3 setup with a 1000 cfm throttle body and a single plane intake manifold. As I said, the only reason I want to use the TPI is the way it looks. I've heard, however, that the stock TPI with 48 MM throttle body flows only about 700 cfm. Even with a bigger throttle body (added expense), I'd be hard pressed to get close to the 1000 cfm of the other system. Should I just bag the looks in favor of a little more CFM?
  13. Beautiful install, shows wonderful craftsmanship. My 383 twin turbo will be fired up in about a couple months, with luck. Hope to have the motor installed in the next couple of weeks. I'm going with a couple of Buick Grand National turbos. My install will look a lot more junkyard than yours. I can appreciate how much time it took. Great job!
  14. It's really not a fair fight because the predator has weapons and is an intelligent creature, while the alien is just a bad ass animal. It would be like you vs. a lion with a gun. Remember Aliens (plural)? Those space marines kicked ass with their weapons. Now, if you took the genetic mutant aliens from the last alien movie, where they were hybridized with Sigourney Weaver, and gave them rocket propelled grenades and .50 caliber machine guns, I would put my money on the alien/human hybrid.
  15. I've noticed that too. I really miss their participation.
  16. Now that I've learned how to weld, I've thought of making a giant version of something like that and sell it to artsy-fartst rich folks for thousands. I know a guy who has his own six hole golf course on his property, and every hole has a really simple sculpture made out of 2x2 mild steel tubes (about 5 grand each). There's this welding supply place nearby that has lots of ornamental stampings, like flowers and leaves-maybe I can make something exorbitantly expensive out of that and help pay back the cost of my car buildup.
  17. I agree with the cutoff wheel-it's more precise than a sawzall or plasma cutter. I did mine without a rotisserie by basically cutting the frame rails out, leaving 2 parallel cuts in the floor. It was easier than trying to contour the floorpan (I thought about doing this, but it turned out to be easier to just rip out the whole thing.
  18. Yeah, but it's got a big huge hole in the hood--you'll need to get that fixed and it's got a big silver thingy sticking out of that hole. The shocks are real worn out, too, cause the car's sitting really low. You can probably get the owner to drop the price a little for that.
  19. Hey Nathan, What road course do you run at. There aren't that many around here, are there?
  20. Which explains why I operate on chicks in the day and my special girl (4 wheeled kind) at night It helps to cross train.
  21. I've always been amazed that orthopedic surgical instruments look just like the tools you can get at Home Depot, only they are much more expensive. In fact, I think I'd rather have a DeWalt drill than the common OR brand, Stryker.
  22. Ya know, amputating that leg just above the knee will take care of the problem for good. That's what some doctor told me after hurting my knee when I was five years old. You can imagine my reaction at that age . I hate doctors.
  23. I'm really impressed with this thread. Everyone seems so insightful and eloquent, and I don't see a whole lot of "Buy American" sentiment here. I think everyone realizes that that Toyota built in the States uses brakes sourced in the US, made by Americans, as well as wiper motors, bumpers, etc. For my part, I have done a lot to narrow the trade deficit in the past year by replacing the Japanese motor in a Japanese car with a Chevy block. SCAT crank, SRP pistons, heads by Airflow Research, cam and rockers by Comp Cams, oil pan by Moroso ( I wonder if it would cost less than $200 of we could outsource the production in Malaysia at $1/hr--after all, it's just a metal pan) I guess people who aren't purists like most of the members of this board tend to be more open and tolerent and see the futility of the "Buy American Only" philosophy.
  24. Wouldn't it be cool if they could bend the rules a little bit and class a V8 Z with the Trans Am series cars of the late 60's? It would be nice to run a few laps with a Camaro or Mustang
  25. I've been wondering what Aux does too, cause he sure does have a lot of time on his hands.
