  1. I'll give you mine if you want to come get it, but the car is in Auburn, Washington. I would only give it to you to cover the costs of getting it down to you and make sure it's in caring hands. Clean title, 1970 240z with an early-ish VIN.
  2. Thanks Paz.. The vehicle the motor is currently in is a '72 Chev pickup, so it's probably the same motor the pickup came with. I guess to make this a two part thread.. When you put #1 cyl at TDC on the compression stroke, should the points on the timing chain gear and the cam gear be facing eachother (cam gear top, timing gear bottom), or both facing up (cam gear up, timing gear up)? I hear on later engines, the point on the timing gear should be facing upward..?
  3. Thanks for the link.. Reading that, I can tell the engine was made in michigan on April 23rd.. Didn't find a "00" suffix code though, and still have no idea what the "H" is for.
  4. Does anyone have a good resource to tell me what an engine is from if i give the number casted into it? The number from the front of the engine is: VH042300 The engine is a 350 Chevrolet V8, but I'm unsure of the year. Tried to google search engine casting identification number, but came up with different looking numbers. Thanks!
  5. Anyone have Marc's contact name on here? Or email?
  6. Good responses. Might be worth going through getting the car running after all. Special thanks to J for making the search that much easier. Don't see that too much on forums. Thanks everyone.
  7. It's bad enough to just replace the engine with a vh45de.. I just thought it was a crazy thing to see.. To the guy who saw it with the mitsu, that a result of the infamous "crank walk" of the 4g63?
  8. Tore down my L6 the other week, to replace timing equipment, and found this: Apologies for the bad image quality. The crank keyway looked like it was chipped/chunked out by the key itself, or some other means. I've never seen this before.. Just wondering if you have?
  9. Just to add a technical resource to the thread, here's something I found at NICOclub.com.. It's current, ongoing collaborative knowledge surrounding the VH45/VH41 http://forums.nicoclub.com/zerothread/202616 A thread similar to this might be something to consider making a sticky in the future..
  10. It is small on the port side, but rather large on the entrance. I should target this manifold more to L20 owners?
  11. I have the same on my 280z and they have "Ultra" center caps. I imagine center caps are interchangable though, so I can't be sure.
  12. Do you have a digital camera in that tool bag?
  13. I'll try to measure them tonight. They are disassembled from the manifold anyway, so it shouldn't be a problem. They need a rebuild and one of them is already torn apart. All parts are there, however, and in good shape. Jon, didn't realize you were so local. Good to see someone from seattle. Would be nice to get a meet going when the weather isn't sub freezing. Thanks all, for the information.
  14. Thanks for the input guys.. I bought a wrecked 1991 Q45 for 700 dollars in running and driving condition. (good enough deal?) Even if I don't do the swap, I should make a profit parting it out, or reselling it. I'm going to go to a trusted local aluminum welder/race car builder and see what he says about mating the T56 bellhousing to the back of that engine. It looks like the only thing that might hold me up on this project is the funds and motivation to wrench in the cold after going to work for 10 hours. In any case, the project has started, and I hope to keep you all updated as events happen. If you have anymore information, please let me know. Thanks, Barrett PS: When is next years Motorsport Auto Z meet? It'd be nice to have a deadline..
  15. I have a set of triple Mikunis for sale locally. I believe they are the kind with Solex in bigger writing. Not really too sure which ones though or what size though. In any case, I have a few buyers interested and was wondering, from a trusted Z resource, what they are worth with a Sanyo manifold and a set of triple K&N filters with chrome housings in very beautiful condition. Carbs need a rebuild and manifold has no linkage. Not really looking for a "how much you'd pay personally", but more of a "how much are they worth to someone that wants them". Thanks in advance, Barrett
  16. Ok.. So I did a bit of looking on the local Craigslist and found a guy that's parting a Q45. He said he'd sell me the whole car for 600 or 700. I'm leaning toward 6 . In any case, the return on the car should be good, upon parting it out. But I'm still considering other possibilities. Thanks, cookson, for the link to the cardomain website. Was very informative. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I feel that a 300zx transmision would be an easier addition to the engine than a T56..? Does anyone have any information on this? I would really like to get this swap going, whether it's the 327 or q45. The reason I'm hesitating and thinking VH swap would be better is the all Nissanness of it, thus, the value being higher and the car being more exotic. Please, any input, whether saying to "search more", or anything, would be appreciated.
  17. Tried searching, but to no avail. Was wondering if anyone can put me in contact with someone that has successfully completed, or is in process of completing, a VH45 swap into an S30. (A.X.E. Power?) Also, how radically different/ what would I have to technically overcome to mate a '94 Camaro T56 to an earlier VH45? I imagine them to be quite a bit different in most regards (housing, spline, starter, etc..), but you never know when an idea will get lucky and become a good one. This might be a question for the chev board (but I'm more interested in the VH at the moment). I currently have the said T56 and an older SBC 327. Would these two have any problem coming together? I heard something about rear main seals, but no difinitive information. Finally, what does a front clip from a, let's say, 1991 Q45 go for these days. I have a guy offering me one.. Says it's a twin turbo for some reason. I'd like to make an offer, but am weary of the turbos and where it came from... Thanks in advance for the information. -Barrett
  18. Realistically, time factors in as well. I just don't know how long it'd take to have a functional 280z with the LT1 + T56, running reliably enough to drive it over a mountain pass and do a rolling resto.. Two people would be working on it, one having done a newer engine swaps before, and the other having done SBC engine swaps his entire 60 year life into hotrods. JTR kit would be ordered for mounting, radiator would be purchased in advance, fans would also be purchased. Brakes would also need to be gone through on 280z. Working in a full garage with lift. Realistically, what amount of time would you estimate for a quick swap? Out of camaro, in 280z.. I've done a Honda in sub 40 hours by myself. That's with engine work while the motor was out.
  19. Also, will the T-56 bolt right up to the SBC 327?
  20. As an update: Went and looked at the car today. I am buying it, but I don't know if I'll keep the motor. I have someone that wants to buy the whole car for 2k, and I get to keep the wheels and T56 trans. The suspension is toast, and most of the body is toast, but the drivetrain itself seems pretty good. I'm having qualms in deciding to keep the engine or not based on my wants for a 280z with an LT1. I have a carbed 327 that I could put the T56 behind, but it's not as powerful and probably not as reliable as the LT1 engine. Any input on one over the other would be great. Money is a factor, and I do need to make money on this deal (or so says my banker). I have a choice between: 1) selling the current reliable daily driver that I've owned for the past four years having about $3500 left over for building a 280z LT1 T56, or 2) just sell the camaro, keep the transmission and wheels and make 100 dollars profit while potentially using the 327 sbc & T56 for the 280z. The 327 sbc would come out of my 1965 chevrolet pickup. It has a 272 advertised duration cam, oversized heads, edelbrock intake manifold and a AFB 650 Carb. I have a Cadillac 500 engine to replace the 327 in the pickup, but it'd need work before I put it in, and I generally like to take the truck to shows during the summer. The person I'd be selling the car and engine to is a buddy of mine with a third gen Trans Am that he's rebuilding. This would help his project along as he'd get a good engine and a disk brake rear end out of the deal. I seriously don't know what to do and any information would be absolutely appreciated. Either way it's a win-win, but I need one to be a bigger win. Thanks.
  21. Actually, it's just a T56 with taller gears evidently. Here's what my buddy dug up about the tranny from the f-body forums: Then the first question on this page tells of the gear ratios with the m28 compared to the m29.. http://www.f-body.org/faq/4/4_3.htm Hope that answers some questions.. I retract my T58 statement.. The seller was pretty adament about it being a T58. I had never heard of one before either, but I took his word for it.
  22. I just happened to come across a 1993 camaro that someone selling because he decided to take an excursion across the center of the highway (i knew stock ride height on camaros was pretty high, but not enough to offroad it). In any case, he's selling the whole lot for 1900 dollars. The engine is the MAFless LT1 with a 6-speed T58 (yes, T58) behind it. Evidently, it has a mild cam, aluminum LT1 manifold and a K&N intake. My question is what i'd need before I part the rest of the car out. Do I use the driveline? Is the radiator usable? etc. etc. The combo will go in either a '77 280z or a '70 240z. The 280 is in better shape body wise, so that will be the most likely candidate. I will search around the site a little more on this topic, but what considerations do I have to take into account regarding the clutch? How about o2 sensors? Also, I'm pretty sure this, as a whole, is a good deal, but it'd be nice to have some backing on that opinion. Any other information you can provide about this particular year LT1 and the swap in general would be great. This is my first one, and I hope to make a good driver out of it. Goal is to keep up with my buddy's 1994 Supercharged Z28. I've been reading the site for about a year now and finally have the financial resources to do a swap. You guys all seem like you know what you are doing more so than almost any forum I've been to. Thanks in advance.. -Barrett
  23. Thanks for the info guys.. Doesn't look like the swap will happen for that reason. We were just looking for a cheap solution. Hope this thread helped someone though..
  24. I'll let you know if we decide to do it. The truck is a 1980, found that out. If it becomes to labor and cost extensive, then we probably wont do it. Would be nice to try out though. I've heard of it being done somewhere in my vast internet travels.
