  1. As long as you stay away from the cheapest parts the auto store has you should be fine, in a lot of cases you can acctually get higher quality parts at the local parts store. All of that stuff is pretty common you should have multiple options no matter where you look. I'd probably stick with the nissan distributor cap, but that's just me.

  2. Are you thinking rear mounted or front mounted?

I think rear may be possible' date=' but given the length of the 911 behind the wheels, the engine would either be hangin out of the body work, or being hidden by extensive body work...

in the front, the frame rails are probably too narrow.[/quote']

I want to do front mounted with an adapter plate to the stock trans, I'd like to use a T56 but I dont have that kind of money so I'll stick with the 280zx 5 speed that I already have. I havn't been able to get any measurements yet, but I think the engine will sit between the frame rails, just barely. By eyeball, it looks pretty darn close. The major problem I see with this swap is the steering, It will have to go up and over the engine, but that means I have to set the engine back and down to fit it. Its a pretty long engine so I dont know how that will work yet. I think I'll just focus on getting the engines before I worry about the details.

  3. Nice... I wouldn't have thought the hatch would close. Who says you cant lug stuff around in a sports car?

Does anyone acctually have a porsche engine installed in their Z? I am trying to convince the owner of 14 flat sixes to give up a couple. If I can pry them away from him I want to put one in the Z, if that happens I'll have plenty more questions.

  4. I dont see how the wheel wells are a low pressure area on these cars. Unless my car is missing some parts, very likely, then there is a huge pocket where air gets traped directly behind the front wheels. Cutting a hole in the exterior metal and venting it outboard will promote smooth airflow. That or install an inner fender shroud like most modern cars have.

Another idea that I had was to reduce the drag created by the headlight buckets. If you can move the acctual headlight foreward by an inch or so that will allow air to flow around the light and into the inner fender. This air can then be vented overboard through the wheel well or just aft of it. Or if you really want to get creative duct it down to your brakes, the more air on those the better. btw, moving to a smaller diameter light in combo with this mod will get more of that air out.

The only way you will be able to get your car up to and past 200mph and not feel like it's going to fall apart is to completely rebuild it from the ground up, new suspension, up to date aerodynamics, basically redo everything.

  5. Very cool picture! It doesn't show the windshield area which seems to be the focus of this thread. Although it does show the flow over the rear hatch "unsticking" from the car (Smoke lines are blurred) which is interesting to note. If you were to chop the top as shown earlier in the thread you could pretty much cure this phenomenon.

I'm not a specialist in this field but I have done a lot of research on high speed aerodynamics, mostly transonic(.7 - 1.2 mach). Your aim should be to reduce the frontal area of your car. Everything should have a path through the car. Look at any purpose built race car and you'll see what I mean. Every scoop has an outlet, and most engine bays are sealed from airflow. If I was building a high speed Z I would seal and smooth the underside, vent the radiator to the top of the hood (like the shelby series 1), vent the wheel wells through the fender(like a corvette), and slope the windshield/chop the top. A few more small tweaks and you should be able to hit 200mph no problem.

The latest addition to my Z collection is a 240z (sig pic), a chop top and a g nose are in the works to start the mods. Its going to be a pure street car but aerodynamics are my thing so it fits that I'd do those mods. I'm still trying to get a shop lined up to do the work in but sooner or later the work will begin!

  6. Mine was a bit dinged up too but I sanded it as flat as I could before painting it. Helped alot but there are still divets in the S's and twards the back.

Its the enamel paint, no need to bake it or at least I shouldn't have to.

  7. I tried a couple of things before settling on a sanding stick, gives a brushed finish and a cleaner cut line than anything else I tried. I still have to clear coat it but that is much easier than the rest of the work.

btw: If anyone is interested, I'd like to paint a few more. If you want yours done let me know.

  8. ...I take that to mean that everything that has gone up, (aviation related since the Wright bros flight 100 years ago), has ALL come back down…. Am I on the right track here?

That's exactly what I mean. I am in Aviation Maintenance and I heard a joke a while back along the same lines although it mentioned a perfect record. We try to keep it light around the shop so I figured that I would share the humor with the aviation people on here.

  9. I dont have a clue which forum this falls under but I figured that you guys would get the most out of it. I've been having Z withdrawls lately not being able to work on it while in storage, so I pulled the valve cover and painted it this week. I have never been a fan of chrome or shiny engine parts so I kept the shiny to a minimum. I might have to repaint it when I finally decide on the body color, but I'm willing to do that. It's going to be a while before I get it back on the car but it was fun anyway. Its far from perfect but it was a nice relaxer and it looks good enough to hide under the hood.

  10. I have had at least one datsun for a little over a year now and I have been back and forth so many times on the powerplant you Wouldn't believe some of the things I've considered. Now thanks in large part to you guys and those very very sweet sounding turbo L6's I think I've made up my mind! I'm taking the engine and trans from my 280zx and putting them in my 240z along with a nice little turbo. I knew there was a reason I love this board!
