  1. In California (and other states/counties that are under EPA controls) you, the vehicle owner, give implied consent to allow inspection of your vehicle. Its all part of the regulatory powers Congress granted the EPA and the local air quality management districts around the country.
  2. Looks like the CA BAR is up to its old tricks again. Just saw and checked out a BAR Smog Survey roadside checkpoint on Lambert Rd. in La Habra, CA this morning. I stopped and talked with the CHP officer that was stationed there and he said they were "surveying" all bi-annual exempt vehicles that went past the checkpoint. They had a 1970 Chevrolet Carprice and a 1973 Toyota something in line when I stopped. No chassis dyno but it appeared they were doing a tailpipe check and a visual. The officer said that if anything was not right they would order a full inspection that had to be completed within two weeks. FYI... the location they chose was a predominantly Hispanic neighborhood and both drivers that I saw were Hispanic.
  3. $83 per 90 degree bend? My latest price list from SPD lists a 3.5" 5" CLR mild steel .049 or .065 wall 90 degree bend at $39.31 for the full boogie retail price. Its $86.06 full boogie retail for a 304L stainless bend with the same dimensions.
  4. $1.5M now. She is now officially an eBay joke - just like her porn star career.
  5. I don't. I try my best to ignore a possible bias in the author until I've read the entire article. If I find something "not right" about what's written, then I look to the author's bias to see if there might be an agenda. Even the most radid propogandist (Moore, Coulter) are right sometimes. If someone yells at you to run because a piano is falling and will crush you, you would be a stupid person to ignore the advice while trying to determine the motives behind the warning. Content first, author second. In this case, I felt the treatment was balanced so I don't really care what the author's political leanings are. Its not relevant to the content.

  7. http://www.foreignpolicy.com/story/cms.php?story_id=2601&print=1&PHPSESSID=c7107ddb024f2ee2ad75cffd9a3815ff Good treatment of the subject. Liberals can spot evil and Conservatives can spot goodness so the article must be fairly balanced.
  8. You can buy up to 5" tube bends and mild steel or stainless tubing at SPD 888-778-3312.
  9. After looking at the video it appears that it caught the last lap of my session in the car when I was testing the brakes. After the Z crosses the finish line the first time I was on a cool down lap.
  10. Having driven Ken's car a bit, I can say this: 1. It pulls well from 1,500 rpm to 7,000 with a slight bump from 5,000 on up. I did a few full throttle accelerations in 3rd gear using the above rpm range and the engine felt strong. All the laps on the 1/2 mile oval in the video were run in 3rd gear from about 3,000 (didn't look at the tach coming out of the corners) to about 7,000. 2. It sounds great! 3. Lap times were in the 20 second range and we were no threat to ANYONE who's driven on an oval before. I think any accomplished oval track racer could have kept up with us using Art Singer's rental car. 4. Hoosier R3S04's appear to work pretty well on an asphalt 1/2 mile oval. 5. A symetric suspension setup doesn't. 6. I have a lot more respect for asphalt oval track racers. Concrete walls are intimidating as hell. 7. Art Singer can drive better then he let's on.
  11. I'll just put this out there to remind people of ALL the reasons Congress and the President went to war in Iraq: http://www.c-span.org/resources/pdf/hjres114.pdf
  12. He should sell the flight jacket he was wearing on eBay.
  13. If you are so convinced that these companies are making a fortune, why don't you take all of your money and buy stock? If Iraq, Afghanistan, Kuwait, and all these other countries are such a gold mine for these companies, why are their stock prices within normal, reasonable multiples based on earnings and expenses? Are Wall Street investors just blind to what you already know? Are they missing out on the Haliburton Golden Goose? Oh wait, that's another part of the conspiracy. The illicit profits are being secretly funnelled by the Word Bank and the evil Jewish bankers to all the Skull and Bones members.
  14. Wow 2! It looks like we've reached the end game in Afghanistan. http://news.telegraph.co.uk/news/main.jhtml?xml=/news/2005/02/22/wtal22.xml

  17. A suggestion: Find a small independent air compressor servicing company and ask them if they have any rebuilt units for sale. Sometimes you can score a good deal on an older unit that will last for decades. I picked up a rebuilt mid-1950s Kellog 10hp two stage air compressor with a 120 gallon tank, new Baldor electric motor, and a large air dryer for $1,500. That price included free servicing for two years (4 oil changes) and a two year warranty on parts and labor.
  18. We can add an OEM style inner frame so that the factory hinges and hood latch can be used. You will have to fab a couple small plates for the hood hinge mounting and drill/tap (or install inserts). We don't pre-drill the factory holes (although the places are marked) because where these holes are positioned are critical for proper fit. Every one of these 30+ year old Zs needs a lot of adjustment to get the panels to fit well.
  19. There's probably a lost thread somewhere on this site where I posted a discussion I had with two metalurgists from the University of Michigan. At the time (2000?) there wasn't any big research study completed on the supposed benefits of cryo treatments so they were skeptical. They did mention that Bethlehem Steel had started a big study to determine the "how's and why's" but their bankruptcy ended that effort. It says something that a big steel company would make the effort. Since then, maybe some definitive research has been completed. In my experience (brake rotors) cryo treatment has increased the service life of the part and the two researchers felt that cryo treatment might be especially effective in improving abrasion resistance.
  20. It all depends on which Quaiffe 6 speed he was running, They make 3 different ones and I know of one that's been behind a VRL Viper GTS for a couple years. That car ran 8s and also road raced.
  21. http://www.aeromuseum.org/Exhibits/AircraftEngines/r4360.html I think I can get this swapped into a 240Z. But, the 8,000 ft. lbs. of torque would require outriggers to keep from flipping the car over and over and over...
  22. Man, I knew someone was going to ask me that. I have a drawing around here somewhere but I can't find it. I know the spoiler was 7" tall measured from the hatch surface but I don't remember the angle. I'll look at the C&D article tonight. The holes in the top are a row of rivets. You can't see it in the pictures above but the spoiler has a back section that makes a boxed triangle (see below). A simple sheet of aluminum wouldn't have had the strength needed.
  23. That is the Mini-Bike of Death! Its thrown four people on the ground, two of them professional race car drivers. I've had it up to 40mph following a Lexus (that's how I know how fast I was going) and I gave up because my vision blurred badly and my hands and forearms went numb. Plus, it started this front end wiggle that felt like it was going to be real tank slapper. One clue about its modifications: it needs 112 octane leaded fuel to run properly. I think Tim240Z has ridden it...
