For some reason, the audio isn't supported by my software...even when I download it from Microsoft--bother!
Your bike part innovation looks good! Hope it works well too for a long time! Keep us posted on the progress of your car!

Yeah, those Scat cranks are really great according to David Vizard. He totally loves those cranks and the way they are made--I've looked into pricing and they are so little money, anything else just doesn't come close! If I can find a decent 400 block, which is getting harder to do, I'll be in business. 377 is the way to go for me!

Sounds like a plan--do the swap first, get everything running, and then do the fiberglass stuff later. I think the 400 ci block is a good idea.

You know, that Lakewood bellhousing is looking better and better all the time, and I like red!

Traction problems are one of the better problems to have...also like getting sideways all the way down the street and smoke everywhere; makes the riceboys cower in fear...
Glad to hear you solved the carb/fuel pressure problem; I'll take note.

A while back someone posted a Hot Rod article url that had a destroked 400sbc with a 350 crank(?!?) that I thought was now a 377? I'm all mixed up! But somehow I think you are right, Lone, that a 327 crank (aren't they all forged) is used to make a 377? Am I all mixed up? With the hours I keep, yeah...someone straighten me out here...help!

I just saw your repost of the interior, so I had to post again! The interior is totally pristine in that car--man, what a deal you made. Go ahead, rub it in my face, maybe there's one for me out there once I dump my stinky 260Z

HA HA!! Great to have you back, Lone! You have not lost your sense of humor that's for sure!

Duuuuuude, you scored BIGTIME!!!!!!! WELL ALRIGHT!!!! Sweeeet Z! With all that great stuff. Patience is a virtue and generally rewards you--CONGRATS!!!
A VERY NICE CAR! Your sig is totally raw too! Just make it a wee bit smaller and you're good to go. Congrats again on an awesome deal. This is definitely one to record as one of the great deals of all time!

I would say, HECK YES! I hardly ever drive my Z in a "normal" manner, and any bracing makes a difference. The Datsun unibody is not exactly a space frame, if you know what I mean I can't wait to get my 8 point cage into a Z, yeah, yeah, yeah!!!!

I totally know that feeling! I even get "butterflies" in my stomach from the anticipation of getting something in the mail once I have ordered! Yowza! Some things never change do they?

Also, if you have the time, pull the damper and put a new timing chain in place. You may not even need to do that, though since this is a temporary motor. Does the motor spin/crank turns? Take Pete's advice about checking for the plastic--make sure it wasn't a gear. Good luck.

Justen,
The 1984-1986 Camaro base radiator will fit the Z. Many of us are running that already in our cars. I bought mine for about $75 from a good wrecking yard--just went in and pulled it. With a good fan, the radiator will work fine and fit fine. As long as she is selling a direct replacement, it has the same dimensions and will fit, period. Hope this helps.

Good point, Ross! I had forgotten about that. I hope to keep my car free from any major leaks, especially hazardous ones! I just don't like the looks of the wrap, although I have thought about it...

What you buy depends on your application--how much horsepower you want and how much $$$ you have.
I decided to go with cheapie block huggers due to cost and due to the fact that I will have about 300hp in my Chebbie motor.
If I could, I would go with ceramic coated full length headers from a quality outfit like Sanderson, but that's major $$$ which I don't have. I'm cheap and proud of it... until I get money

Len, try GM Sports Salvage in San Jose (it's on Old Oakland Rd or Santa Clara Ave--can't remember just north of the SJ Mercury News). They are JTR's "favorite" wrecker if I'm not mistaken. They are a quality out fit and where I purchased the Camaro motor, but pricey IMO.

Fairlady 327's buddy will give him the cool 17" inch rims off his SS for free! That's the issue. Those wheels are sweet; I saw them and they would look so tuff on a V8Z!

This topic of the doors bolting up to 240Z vs 280Z came up a long while back. Be VERY careful before purchasing the 280Z doors for your 240Z. I would be surprised if they actually fit. And yes, the latch mechanisms are somewhat different. If anyone tries this, please post the conclusive results!

Chuck, sorry for forgetting about your post, but a mild 383 is relatively cheap and has tremendous torque, if that is what you want. The 350 has less low end torque which is not so bad considering the light weight of the car. The choice is yours.

Great reading, Ross, but those of us on a tight budget are probably better off using a flat tappet cam, at least in the short run. Rollers become more cost effective in the long run since they are much less prone to wear. I went flat tappet due to extreme cost constraints, but would go roller in a heartbeat next time around if the money is there.

Rick, glad to hear this was an "easy" fix with no major damage. What oil are you using? Just curious.

Jason, the Camaro motor I have will make about 300hp (I have calculated) with the pathetic stock heads. HOWEVER, this does not diminish what the motor can do in such a light car even with those heads. I'll wait on the aluminum heads for now...
And no, the car isn't set up quite yet, so I can't tell you how fast it is. Sorry, man.
Tenth280ZX: yes, the Vortec heads are the "truck" heads you describe and flow something awesome right out of the box! And no, the 305 heads are not the hot ticket unless the smog heads Jason has are the only other alternative. They have something like 58cc chambers (almost too good for added compression) and have tiny runner and valves to match (good for torque but not good for high end), which doesn't promote big HP numbers. I'm really on a budget, but am building a nice car anyway and I have even thought about the 305 heads, since they are practically free and can bump the compression ...but a better way to go would be the Vortec heads due to their low cost. I'm not quite sure, but the heads from a Camaro TPI 350 I think are Vortecs(?)--could be way wrong, but at least they are better then 72cc, 74cc, or 76cc smoggy heads. Just my $.02

Your engine is probably like mine--a "stock" 350 from a 70's Camaro with 8.0:1 or 8.5:1 compression. The heads are worthless, so there is your biggest hangup regarding air/fuel flow. Some Vortex heads will wake that puppy up by bumping compression to near 10:1 and flowing excellently right out of the box--you're getting close to going beyond pump gas with the compression, but should still be ok. The intake manifold is a dual plane, which is good and should be geared for low to mid torque range. The cam is probably right for the car, but known specs are better then unknown. A cam with advertised 274 degrees is a best bet--especially a dual pattern cam with your present heads. Carb seems right, not too much for the present set up, but your HEI...is that with the stock coil? You could keep the HEI, but invest in an MSD HEI ignition kit it that takes the coil out of the distributor, gives you greater volts, and gives you a strong MSD ignition as well. Summit has pretty good prices on those.
In summary, the heads are your problem--weak flow and low compression. Replacing them with Vortecs etc will help, and an MSD will help too. You don't need to rebuild the bottom end, yet, Jason.
