  1. Mike if you're looking to make a chin splitter, I can tell you from seeing race cars in the Deutches Museum, Munich Germany, that they are actually quite thick. I saw one on a DTM Audi that was at least 1/2 inch thick. They are fairly robust and stick out 3-6 inches from the front of the car. They use two or three small, slender rod end type mechanisms to keep the thing horizontal.

  2. Sean, Sacramento gets a little HOT in the summer, and I don't think your fan will adequately cool the car. Although I am still in the process of doing this, I am going to use a Ford Taurus fan from the wrecking yard. It will cool like no one's business--way over 2000 cfm, and it will be cheaper then the other fan (more $$) on my list, the Black Magic Fan from Flex-a-lite.

  3. CarCraft or Hot Rod magazine had a how to make a ram air induction article that was pretty good. It used tin stack boots from the hardware store (look like funnels for ducting). The only thing is, I looked at what was available and it was ugly. I have too much pride to use those. Fiberglass or carbon fiber seems like the best alternative. I want to find out more about what John Coffey just mentioned about the air plenums needing to be there. Seems rather odd...

  4. If you want an automatic transmission, the best bet is to get a 700R4 tranny--they are fairly plentiful and parts are readily available. If you choose to go 5 speed, you could get away with a Camaro T5 unit. Go for a 1988 or later "world class" units, since they are purportedly more reliable.

  5. Kevin, I'm in the San Francisco Bay Area! Although I like Texas, I live over here!

Speaking of seeing other's V8 Z's, I had a chance to meet up with Fairlady 327 and see his car. He's a cool guy who somehow manages to keep up a V8 Z while being a full-time student and working part-time. 3 hours went by very quickly as we watched the riceboys cruise by and rev their coffee can exhausts at us.

  6. Yes, 11:1 compression ratio would not be good for the street, period. You need octane boost just to drive the car, and that's after filling up with premium fuel! Just going to a milder cam won't do it in this case. I agree with Kevin on waving less then $5000 under his nose first, since you can always go up, but not down. This car sounds good, but it really is suited more to racing at the track than for driving on the street. However, all can be remedied...

  7. First of all, the Red Line is good stuff, period. The reason you are getting more noise in there is that it is a thinner fluid by nature. The increase in noise is normal, but if you want to get rid of it, switch to their "shock-proof" 75W 250 differential/gear oil. Let us know if this helps.

  8. David, do what Terry suggested and try to figure out where the "pop" is coming from. The reason I said "pray it's not your tranny" is because R200s are common and much less expensive to replace then a tranny. Good luck.

  9. $5,000 sounds about right for a V8Z in reasonable condition. Remember, the tranny needs work, but a cam & lifters can easily be had for under $100-$200 (easy to install yourself too). Perhaps if you wave $5000 or so under his nose, he'll sit up and take notice.

    All the best,

  10. The Caddy motors look really trick all polished and such. If prices are really from $600 to $10000, then they are in the ballpark of some people's affordability. Since the motor is not BIG in terms of cubic inches, I'm wondering just how wide these engines are? I think the fit would be pretty good. Very high tech looking and those guys have interesting solutions to some problems.

By the way Terry, try not to post in all capital letters--it's almost like you're shouting. Better to use the lower case if possible and only use caps to emphasize something smile.gif

    Cheers,

  11. Ambrose, the engine has way too much cam IMO for "street" use. It is actually made for racing--either pro-street or drag. If you pop in a more streetable cam with less duration, say about 222 degrees @.050 inches.

The price is a little steep for my taste, BUT it depends on what YOU want. The car may be beautiful and worth the money. To change it to JTR spec is not difficult or pricey, but who knows about the tranny? Just food for thought and my $.02 smile.gif

  12. John, sorry that your posts were flamed regarding the Mustang II suspension. Although the forum is here for the free expression/opinions about Z cars etc., people still have opinions--but the way they are expressed can make all the difference...

  13. "The Fabulous Lungfish???" Well, it's better then "The Incredible Mr. Limpet" smile.gif

Mike Kelly's site has a write up on a bigger gas tank, so you'll want to check that out. I think his is 22gal or bigger if I remember correctly. Also, I agree with the gas mileage assessment above; you should be getting better mileage with your current setup. Since you're on the web, go to Summit Racing--they have many size tanks in stock at good prices.

  14. Just do a lot of measuring and document everything. I don't know of any Mopar swap as of yet, but it sounds really cool. CarCraft had a write up last month that talked about the Pontiac 455, which is in effect a SMALL BLOCK, and shares many interchangeable parts with its smaller brethren--it even weighs the same! Good luck with your swap--should be a ripper in that ZX!

  15. Welcome, Steve! You will like this forum immensely and find it very useful. Glad to see you have finished your project, or are 95% finished anyway.

I echo Dave's sentiments about the airdam--don't get a fiberglass one unless you are VERY careful parking the car. I find myself always parking the Z's fragile snout too close to everything, so my car is not lowered right now either, but I have a urethane airdam anyway. Maybe someone else will chime in regarding your bumpsteer question. Cheers! smile.gif
