itzgoten
I've been on this forum for about 3 years and I've only lurked around and watched out people's builds. I've actually been building my own car since I've joined this forum and the car is pratically done but FINALLY felt that I should share what I've come to love... of course the Z.. I'm by far no mechanic but try my best to do what I can. So if you ask me something technical I'm sure I'll be limited to answer.. Hope you like the car! Keep in mind I've had this car for 3 years so I'll just post bit by bit until we're caught up to present day. First time the car came home! A few things from MSA came in so I had them installed.. fiber glass BRE style spoiler, ZG flares, CF hood, air dam also got a hold of some new JDM fender mirrors. I lost the pictures of the ZG flare install but we cut both the front fender (bad idea) and rear fender. I had the inner and outer rear fender wended together and seam sealed it on the inside so road debris wouldn't get in. few months later I sent the car out and had a 6-point roll cage put in. I also replaced the driver side floor pan because it wasn't in the best shape. Next stop.. to the paint guy. I had the stock motor and tranny removed. Had the car sanded down to check for rust and any problem areas. The car only had rot where the hatch was on the passenger side. I had them cut it out and weld on a fresh piece of metal. Most the work and prep was done at his place. Then it was towed to the paint booth. (I still regret to this day taking it to him. Love the work but I didn't realize he was "working from home".. When I had other issues down the line it was impossible to get any "warranty work" redone.)
itzgoten
So after the car was sanded down and problem areas treated I bought some RustBullet and tested to see how it would work in the engine bay. I bought the automotive one but it was still rather thick. I didn't use it for the rest of the car because it would have given it a pretty nasty finish. At least the engine bay will be safe... pictures of when the car was done being painted.. It was then towed to the shop to have the McKinny mounts welded in and the motor dropped in. The car is finally home form the shop and I had the exhaust done. It sits kind of low but with 3 inch piping it was hard to tuck. more pictures of the car at home.. My buddies Z. He started building his Z the same time I built mine too. I had auto meter phantom gauges put in.
LoneStarS30Z
Looks good, where's the CF hood from? Is that air dam fiberglass or urethane? I keep getting crazy thoughts of the cost effectiveness of swapping a SR, what's your opinion on how it performs? itzgoten
I finally get around to getting a standalone for the car. the car getting ready to get dyno'd at the end of the day the car put down about 250whp and 280tq. Not too bad.. running on the stock ecu with a piggy back I was only able to make 230whp For my birthday I spoiled myself and bought the AZC big brake kit. To my surprise my friends and family pitched in and got me a rear disc brake conversion! I'm truly blessed to have great friends. I ordered new shocks, GC coilovers and a Bride seat because the Corbeau was killin me. I needed something that was built to fit an Asian guy.. When I took turns I was sliding around the seat and it was difficult to shift. my brother and buddy helping me install the seat (more like installing it for me actually) The suspension components were removed for my new shock and coilovers. The perch was cut off and smoothed out. Then I had the new perches welded on. we lowered a few inches just to see how low it could go.. I'd never have it this low though.. not my style. I prefer function over slammed.
itzgoten
I ditched the grant steering wheel and got a Nardi Classic 330mm steering wheel. Also added a NGR Thin Quick release hub adapter. found a sweet deal on the JDM Fairlady badges on craigslist.. I covered it up with masking tape and used an exacto knife to expose the border. Painted it black and for the most part it looks great. no much else happened for a few months.. I took the car out the Buttonwillow for the first time. It was wet and it slowly cleared up throughout the day. Car did pretty well. Here is the video of my track day. My 4th Session beginning of the video is pretty boring till I pass the miatas.. and my 5th (last) session of the day.. the gas tank isn't baffled so coming out of the corners with 1/3 tank of gas sucked. It was just bog until it finally had more fuel. Edited May 29, 2011 by itzgoten
itzgoten
Well that was a quick build thread Looks good, where's the CF hood from? Is that air dam fiberglass or urethane? I keep getting crazy thoughts of the cost effectiveness of swapping a SR, what's your opinion on how it performs? LoneStar, the car is FAR form finished.. it just takes a bit to post up everything.. i love the SR and wouldn't have done it any other way. I had the car weighed and i practically have 50/50 weight distribution... and the car is so freakin light.. it only weighted 2260.. here is the scale with me in the car. the engine sits way far back and it helps the balance out a lot. its a super fun car and I would say reasonably priced compared to doing a RB swap. an RB would have been nice but I would just be paying more for bling factor.. you can see in the track day vid.. after the slow cars finally pointed me over the Z was haulin ass! oh yea.. the hood was from MSA.. but I was told they don't sell it anymore? I bought the hood back in 2008? more pics of the current build to come.. Edited May 29, 2011 by itzgoten

Man man man man, I never really considered going SR, but the way that thing sits way back there is so ideal. I'm assuming you have no real cooling issues either huh? I've always told myself if ever changing engines, it'd be RB, but I bet a top mount SR would be plenty potent. Dammit I'm so easily influenced sometimes I've also heard MSA doesn't sell CF hoods anymore. Is your air dam urethane or fiberglass? I'm gonna study your videos here in a sec. Have you noticed yours flexing at all at speed? Another guy here had the Xenon air dam and it was flexing inwards at highways speeds, he had to make a diffuser to keep it in shape. GT35? Which exhaust manifold? What fuel rail and injectors? Still running on PFC? That's a whole different set up from the first one you posted! Which exhaust manifold? What fuel rail and injectors? Still running on PFC? That's a whole different set up from the first one you posted! it's a completely new setup now.. I don't want to spoil everything just yet.. but it is a twinscroll (divided housing) gt35r dual ball bearing.. turbo manifold is customer 1 one off.. i bought the Full-Race and it didn't fit! waste of money plus -25% restocking fee! LAME! still running the PFC and it kicks ass.. new setup is going to run 850cc injectors w/ a HKS style fuel rail.. i haven't been told the front flexes since i can't see for myselfvbut a front diffuser and rear APR gtc-200 wing (on a spare hatch for the track) is in the works.. not sure when that will happen though because I just spend a chunk of change for the current stuff.. aurgh! since I'm spilling the beans I'll update all the other pictures.. might as well.. hehe
itzgoten
July 4th 2010.. EnjukuRacing.com has a sale for free shipping.. so I decided to buy a crap ton of parts and do a completely built motor.. what ends up happening after i get all the parts? 80% of what I bought was being sold on CL for a fraction of the cost.. I returned everything to enjuku and ate a huge restocking fee. In the end I still came out on top with a $300 restocking fee!.. SWEET! here's all the goodies I picked up lightweight pulleys apexi 1.1mm headgasket greddy baffled oilpan.. ended up not working for my setup so I sold it and got something else.. CP 8.5:1 pistons BC ProSeries rods BC adjustale cam gears (if you have a s13 sr20 don't buy this. You need a cam gear with a spider gear on the exhaust side. Only HKS sells it.) BC Stage 3 cams BC valve train and valves greddy rocker arm stoppers (RAS) and a buncha other goodies i'm going to put to use! here is what I did keep from Enjuku Racing.. ISIS short shifter s14 throttle pulley for the intake manifold and a magnetic drain plug intake manifold.. i swapped it for the sand finish opposed to polished though Edited May 29, 2011 by itzgoten
itzgoten
aside from all of that I had to pick up some other parts that I would need. timing chain tensioner oil pump and timing chain cover new hydraulic lifters ARP head studs supertech valve guides and valve stem seats
Matt K
I found 850's to be lacking for a high boosted GT35 setup on an SR...I had a Full Race GT3567R on my old SR, and would up switching to 1000cc injectors from Sard 850's. The Power FC took a little tweaking, but it worked fine for my combo.
itzgoten
I sent out the head to get ported and to have the block bored & honed, decked, etc. it took forever to get it back! the head this was the sand finish intake manifold I mention before. it was port matched to the head. now I'm just waiting on the turbo parts that I ordered. I'm going to run this for a year maybe and I'm doing e85 on 1200cc injectors. But thanks for the heads up.
richracing
very nice man! I was thinking about going with a built SR on mine, but now I have my mind set on an RB26dett with twin gt2871r's
itzgoten
very nice man! I was thinking about going with a built SR on mine, but now I have my mind set on an RB26dett with twin gt2871r's the RB is a great setup. I originally wanted to do a LSx swap or an RB but after sitting down more and thinking about what I wanted at the end of the day the SR fit my needs.. In the beginning I only wanted 300 HP.. but I should have known better. With the friends and family I have going big was the only way. So since I had the SR it worked out very well. And with how balanced the car is now I don't regret it one bit. The car is pratically a midship vehicle... entire engine sits behind the front cross member/axles
