s30kid
dear Hybrid Z, what is this and is it preventing my 280Z from Starting?
MazerRackham
Those look like ghetto rigged fusible links. And if the connectors are bad, they could be preventing the car from starting.
s30kid
where do i get new ones? or can i make them with wire and crimp connections?
NewZed
Two of them look non-stock but may be okay, the red one is stock but the insulator has just slipped up. Push it back down and it will look stock again. Check continuity if you want to be sure that they haven't burned.
Cannonball89
Yes you can make them yourself, BUT you must use FUSIBLE LINK wire. It is different than usual wire, as it is designed to burn quickly at a certain amperage, thus opening the circuit. Regular wire will have the insulation burn off when a short occurs, but will not burn the copper wiring, which means that whatever component is on that circuit will likely burn up. Most autoparts stores sell fusible link wiring, but it is getting harder to find as most modern cars use fuses rather than fusible links. Converting to a fusebox to replace the fusible links is easy, well documented, and highly recommended by me. Not sure if that might be what is "preventing your 280z from starting". That is a pretty vague description of the problem. But looking at the condition of some of those links it may be possible that one or more has lost continuity or is causing excessive resistance. s30kid
Thank you so much i will be fixing them tomorrow. I know for sure the red one is blown because i can hear it make the connection when i wiggle it.
NewZed
That would be a bad connection, not a blown link. A brand new link can still have a bad connection.
